Thanks for making this interview. Dan was so gracious to show up to GPs and sign cards for free and tell stories about them.

One of my favourite Dan Frazier cards is Goblin Gardener. It looks exactly how you expect it to. You know immediately that it's a goblin and he's doing gardening.

Mahamoti Djinn has been my favorite card since ‘94. The incredible art back then was a big reason Magic was so instantly popular and successful. Mr. Frazier was kind enough to sign a bunch of cards for me a while back. Very nice guy

At the end of the '90, I met Mr. Frazier in Paris, during a board game/RPG convention. I talked a bit with him and he drew me a dragon head. I remember being blown away by his speed! Still have my drawing in a frame!

Thank you for your art. I've been playing since 1994 and I will always spot your work from across a room. Yours and Ron Spencer's ;)

Love the comment about them being like icons, that's truly it, the recognizable part has been lacking in recent years, and I find myself often going back to the clearer art style from earlier in MtG's history.

I heartfully agree! Back then, there were many different styles, from Dan Frazier's to the Foglios', from Drew Tucker's to Quinton Hoover's. Nowadays, styles have been formatted. They are of the "RPG-style" type. I think it is a great shame!

So glad I got recommended this. Dan's such a charming and humble fellow. It's cool to hear that even if he was smashing them out quick and dirty he fully understood what the art needed to be from a game design standpoint. "Icons" is such a funny double entendre in this context.

The only Secret Lairs I've ever bought were the Signet series by Dan Frazier. His impact on the vibe of the game in the early days (along with other luminaries like Mark Tedin and Ron Spencer) can't be overstated.

If he only knew what they would be worth in the future the conversation would have been. Wizards: We will give you a hundred bucks for each artwork. Dan: Just give me 10 copies of each mox printed.

I can't remember where the info came from now, but long ago I read or was told that if you owed people money but couldn't pay it you were suppose to call them every week and let them know you were working on it and you would pay them ASAP. So someone at wotc back then came across the same information.

I like how he said that MtG art should be iconic so that it would be instantly recognizable upside down across the table. Now, we have so many cards with so much forgettable MtG art thanks to soulless style guides.

i might be wrong, but frazier didnt say that in the video. As i understand it, that was what WOTC wanted from him. He didnt say "thats how i think it should be" he said "thats what the company wanted from me"

I think the iconic and memorable cards will be more or less determined by time. The strongest cards that will continue to see play in the future will have their art more easily identifiable

@@matthewcecil8552 how can u be this obtuse, a painter sells a painting for $100, sure it’s a lot at once but they might not sell anything for a couple months afterwards. they have no salary, benefits, guaranteed income, so they need to be paid accordingly. at face value it can seem like a large sum but this guy i’m sure was making a fraction of what you make when you look at a years income. not to mention if he put 10 hours into something and sold it for $100 that’s 10/hr

@@matthewcecil8552 for someone presumably educated you seem pretty uninformed about how artists make their money. Do you think they get paid by the hour? also... 22/hour... construction workers make more than that on average in my state. you're either very very junior, or not in the US ( like this artist is /was)
