A character's name can reveal a lot about them. In this video I uncover how the inspiration behind the character Lucy Gray Baird from "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" foreshadows her fate. I break down the etymology of several other characters from "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". As Lucy Gray is not the only one, whose name draws parallels to their namesake.

There’s a scene in the new movie where weatherman Flickerman is on the phone with someplace and he’s confirming his reservation for he and his wife. He also states that they will need a highchair. Could the highchair be for his son Caesar? This story takes place 64 years before we meet Katniss. The actor that plays Caeser is Stanley Tucci who is currently 63 years old…meaning he could realistically portray a character in their 60s. Perhaps young Caesar grows up watching his father host the Games and decides to follow in his footsteps. 🤔

Plus in the first book, Katniss states that Caesar has been the host for at least 40 year's. Also she notices the people in the capital and their obsession with procedures to look younger. Caesar being in his 60's checks out for the timeline.

I feel sorry for Tigris, her cousin who she raised, forced her into stylist, had surgeries to look like a cat, and he was awful to her. No wonder why she smiled when Katniss told her she will kill Snow.

he never forced her to do any of that stuff. if anything, she might've sold her body when she was younger since she said she did things she didn't want to to provide for the snow family. she was probably the stylist for finnick, who snow does force into being child sex slave.

As much as I love the idea of Lucy Gray continuing to be a ghost story in 12, I feel like the Covey probably stopped singing The Ballad of Lucy Grey altogether after her disappearance in the wood, meaning it wasn’t passed down. It definitely seems like one of those songs Katniss would have been morbidly obsessed with. I will relent that after The Hanging Tree, Katniss’s mother did stop any more songs of that type from being shared… I just believe that her father still would have secretly taught it to her during a hunting lesson and told her to “keep it quiet this time” This video was amazing!! It’s made me so much more excited to reread the book (for the 4th time this year lol!!)

What about the jabber and mockingjays though? I figure even if her musical band disbanded the birds that are trained to be able to repeat entire songs and mimic voice would probably repeat her songs to the woods long after she left.

I read Coriolanus in my Shakespearean class for college in 2018, and then Suzanne Collins came out with Ballad and I immediately made the connection. Especially how the internet right now is going through a trend of asking their boyfriends how much they think about “The Roman Empire” and it’s literally because of how much of the American Government has taken inspiration from the Roman’s. The Roman’s were ahead of their time, and I think it’s genius how Suzanne incorporated that into a book series.

I think Maude Ivory who had good memory of songs, who taught he songs to her son, who taught his daughter Katniss the songs. That is how Katniss knows the songs. Snow hates Katniss who is genetically related to his first love Lucy Gray. He tries everything to stop Katniss who takes after her great aunt (cousin) in the games and fighting for Panem. I think Lucy Gray ends up in District 13 and died in the sickness pandemic since she was old (aka the sickness got a lot of of kids died in 13)

I think Lucy managed to escape from Panem and lived free and happy in nature, eventually finding people she could settle with. But I don't think she was running from Snow, or that she suspected about his implication in Sejanus's death. That was just Snow's fears. And she would have confronted him about it if she thought he had something to do with it. That's just the way she is. He was just scared and paranoid. Scared of being catched in killing the 12 District Mayor's daughter by the Capitol (even if everything he did was to keep Lucy alive and well). Scared of being despised by the woman he loved if she knew Sejanus's death was partially his fault. Scared of being abandoned by the woman he loved and dying alone in the forest. He doesn't know how to deal with these poweful emotions. She just noticed how hard was for Snow to survive in nature in one day. He was having a really bad time and couldn't even catch a fish. What if he fell ill and died? She realized this would be a total disaster for him. He was a city boy. She was a nature girl. And she loved him. So she just decided to go on her own, set some fake traps with the snake withouth teeth and the birds singing her song (which was a love song btw). This way, he had to return to his normal life. If you love someone for real, you wish the best for them. Even if it means to let them go. Somehow, she hoped he could understand her actions and feelings. But he didn't. He became so traumatized by this event he decided he would never love or feel fear again. Because feelings didn't let him think straight. This just makes me so sad. Reminds me to the backstory of Magneto, from X-Men. How he turned from a sweet boy to an evil villain. And understanding why they both became crazy is something that just makes me cry. He is the tragic villain. Someone who tried to be good and pure, but was surrounded by so much evil, he finally gave in.

I think you have a very weird interpretation of the story. Lucy literally picked a knife before deciding to hide with a very poor excuse. Even the books made it clear it was an stupid reason to go out the cabin… It was raining, the katniss wasn’t good for eating... If Lucy wanted Snow to go back to his life, she had just to ask. She was not stupid and also was very skilled in self preservation… I think she knew exactly what she was doing but couldn’t poison him because she still loved him… even after realizing how selfish and cruel he could be. They were both very smart and good at strategy. Your interpretation may sound more romantic but it also makes Lucy’s character incredibly stupid when we know she never was. Snow gave her the clue about the three murderers, he told her before what the guns meant, she knew she was the last evidence against him and then realized that he could hurt even his best friend to keep himself safe. Running was her best option and she took it… They both were conflicted, but both choose self preservation first. Now… if he would have indeed killed her if she stayed? That we will never know.

Dr. Gall was psycho, the snakes proved that. She makes Snow look sane. I know Snow is a villian in the orginal trilogy but at least when it came to the treatment of the Tributes in the Capital and at the reaping, treated them with respect. He put them up with very nice rooms and Gall plain treated them like animals.

But, if you see it closely you can say that both voluminas saved an empire to continue. Hunger Games isn't about destruction is about preserving the system that thrives on oppression. Snow could vey well have gotten totally ruined and a lot would have gone wrong with Gal's protection. Without him, the hunger games wouldn't last so much time as it did.

i like to imagine that lucy gray did suspect something about snow. but snow was being completely irrational and delusional, even to the point of him shooting her. i think she was already long gone and didn't want anything of his. trust is more important than love for her and snow lied. i think though, her leaving was probably more to just get away and breathe for a bit. it would explain her bad reasoning and her dropping the scarf in such a flimsy way.

Am I the only one who thinks Lucy Gray initially survived Coryo wanting to kill her but eventually died in the forest due to exposure? A bit of an unpopular theory but hear me out, Lucy and the Covey weren’t as nature wise as Mr. Evergreen and Katniss, sure they knew their way around and fed themselves with plants but they weren’t in the forest as much as katniss. Second, the distances in the U.S are massive, Lucy would’ve taken days if not weeks to arrive to district 13 not counting the fact that she probably left all of her few supplies behind trying to escape from Coryo, my theory is that she survived for a few days before unfortunately dying, plus district 13 in TBOSAS is very different from the district 13 we get to know in Mockingbird, I don’t think they’ll let any outsiders in that early on in the story. There is a solid proof Lucy died if not when Snow shot at her then some time before the events of catching fire. It is very easy to pass by you and it is done very well because as i said it is easy to pass by you, but when you realize what the author did it makes sense and confirms Lucy has passed. It is revealed in a secondary type of way and it is put as a reveal only for the reader in a background-esque event that seems minor to the plot of the chapter. But when you realize she put it there it clicks very much

Ugh she did it once more. The pipeline and fundamentel of the Hunger Games books of social "awakaning" or rather a vale ripped and fuck load of terror i would come to see, learn, indure and where my own morality and comfortability of humanity lies. The glaring portrayal of so much wonder, sorrow, horror, hope and in its only by being, power. I hold it so dear for not only what it said but all croocks and hidden glory but the way i live my life. No joke. Sounds eewie, i know.. ive heard it all before, more importantly it was exactly what i needed for what i before had no such tool. maybe mirror is a better word.. As a hevaly dyslexic .. no kidding.. on top of sevral other some more glaringly than others but never less incredably hard time in school, learning or feelt very strongly about things others landed more naturally on. I watched the BSS movie just a few days ago even with all going on i let my self find comfort and rewewed hope in just a old pal from a sliver of spark ..not an old fling where disapointment would only come.. If not intertainment when what u know? greed and its over powering hunger to its enevetabilty to devour its self.. :))))) LATE STAGE CAPITALISM CORE ::))))
