When you realize that if Kaori ended up living we would be happy and move on and forget it but now that she is dead, we will never forget it cause it hurts so much. Kaori- “promise me, you won’t forget!”

So basically this anime was perfection

when i watched it for the first time, i genuinely thought it’d be a lighthearted slice of life anime about music. I didn’t really read the description, I just watched it. if only i knew what i was getting myself into. and now, every time i re watch it, every time i finish the final episode, i get an overwhelming urge to go straight back to episode 1, when everything was okay, as if turning back time to when it was okay. except that it’s not okay because i know exactly what happens. even when i know what happens i still cry uncontrollably.

"And here again she has her eyes closed, because she's tired. Orrr dead!" I didn't know it was possible to laugh and sob uncontrollably at the same time.

I feel like I'm back in my English class again, but with anime.

The fact that this was recommended to me on April 1,2020...

"Sayonara" The first one was painful but freeing. The second one was well... just painful.

I cried for 4 hour straight after finishing this anime. I’ve never been so emotionally attached to an anime character before. I cry every time I start thinking of it..

Two aspects of this show that made it as tragic as it was is the powerlessness and unfairness. Even though Kousai loved Kaori so much, he couldn't do anything to save her. Not him, her friends, her parents or the surgeons. She didn't want to die. She was scared of being left alone. She was so young with unbound potential. Her future was taken away from her and its incredibly unfair and heartbreaking. For someone as young as 14, being on a gradual decline to death is so mentally taxing and depressing. No young teen should have to worry about not being able to experience everything life has to offer. She never had a first kiss, never was told that she was loved by a significant other. She never got to confess her love to Kousai in person. She never got to experience adulthood...i could go on. She was just too joyous, pure and she gave it her all to help Kousai out of his despair. Even when he'd lost all hope in himself, Kaori was there for him. She never gave up on him. She couldn't have given up on him. It's not in her nature to give up on others, even when they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. And as soon as Kousai was turning a new leaf and is feeling the spirit of living, thats when his first true love is slowly being taken away from him. And there is nothing he can do about it. Life is cruel. I know this story is fiction and i make it sound like this actually happened, but the thing is is that this is a very real scenario. Poor young kids who have aspirations and dreams, get their lives tragically cut short without anything that can be done about it. The grief that they go through, the parents, friends etc. Truly, life is cruel. It's all these things that really made me break down in tears. And i'll tell you, they weren't joyous tears. I seriously cannot watch shows like this ever again. My despair and sorrow is insurmountable after this concluded. All i can say is thank you Kaori for being the angel Kousai needed. You gave him a life full of happiness and resolve. Truly, gone too soon.

In one of the episodes towards the end, Arima and Kaori are in a grassy field near a little bridge. At that moment, it was also night time and there were also fireflies. When Arima was walking away he said something along the lines of getting to play with her again *i think* but as he walks off Kaori stops smiling and says silently That she won’t be there for much longer which kinda embraces what was said at the end about how the black cat and fireflies promote her inevitable death.

I think you're missing something on the final scene. I agree with everything you're saying about the fireflies, kaori's footprints etc. But i think you're missing something that i might have picked up on. When Kousei smiled and turned, I think he was smiling about two things. 1. Like you said, he was looking back on kaori's foot prints to where she ended up and he smiled sorrowfully about kaori's untimely demise. 2. While it's going down the footprints we see the black, blue-eyed cat. I think he is smiling about the cat also, because he came to terms with the trauma that was stopping him from playing and his smile was regretful that he couldn't be with the person who helped him overcome such a great obstacle.

I remember seeing this video like a year or two after it came out, not knowing or caring about this show. I just watched the show and the more I watched it I was like “hmm, this story seems familiar” it wasn’t till the last episode that I remembered this video. My god is this incredible. I’m not an anime fan, but this was a crazy good recommendation from my brother!

I love Kaori, I couldn't stop crying when she died. She was so energetic and tough. I'll never forget her or this anime. PS- where does Watari's kicked ball go?

I watched the anime while previously spoiled about the ending. So every time I saw Kaori on screen all happy and energetic I was like: ''Oh no, how could you do this :C ''. Over time she gets more and more pale, and it just really reminded me of how much I hate seing a person wither away. Obviously, the conclusion to her journey was heartbreaking. One specific thing bugs me tho, and that is, there is no one to blame. She was sick, and died. Its like no one asked her whether she wanted to live or not. A cruel destiny gradually delivered in small doses. Most of the time, when characters die, they are either killed, kill themselves, or die of old age. But, I find that a young person dying from an illness is the most unjust outcome of all, especially if it takes its sweet ass time, accompanied by pain and fear for ones life.

I always got frustrated why Kousai never try to spend any time with her or confess. But after the end, you can see in retrospect that she purposely mislead him and try to put some distance knowing she didn't have enough time and not wanting to hurt him or complicate things with Tsubaki. I have never cried like this, in any show, I will stick with my action/sci-fi animes for now on. A part of my heart died after that end and will never be the same. Amazing story telling

(spoiler warning. - duh) scroll down and/or click 'read more' to see the comment. The black cat is also symbolic of Kaori. Or rather, it is in the series, I can't say if it applies to the opening as much as the series itself... But consider, -when Koari randomly calls Kousei, a black cat starts rubbing his leg at the same time. -He explicitly compares her behaviour to a cat, in that if he chases her, she runs away, but if he lets her come to him she's fine. Later, that same (or maybe a different one) black cat gets hit by a car, and he hurriedly carries it to a vet, only to be told it didn't make it, despite his desperate efforts, and foreshadowing kaori worsening substantially not too long after. Kaori's choice of stationary, and the letters she writes to kousei have cat pawprint motifs, and the envelopes are sealed with a sticker shaped like a black cat's head. And, most telling of all, the final shot of the series, where kosei mentions it being spring again, when he met Kaori, and how this is the first spring without her. Exactly as he mentions her, a black cat looks in the direction of the camera from the other side of the railway crossing, and after the train passes, it's gone. Combined with the exact timing of the words spoken, the cat clearly is a symbolic stand-in for Kaori in that final shot. Now, sure, the opening's symbology is slightly different, but this symbolism in the series itself is also quite obvious....

At 2:10 if you notice there are music themed backgrounds each of the backgrounds describe the character's relationship with one another. Kousei and Kaori being the accompanist lines are Kousei as he needs the highlighted line being Kaori in order to complete the story of the song. Tsubaki and Kousei being the bass clef which is siblings with treble clef which shows the brother-sister part of their relationship. Watari and Tsubaki since they are both athletes it makes since that they are shown off sixteenth notes since they are slightly faster than the rest of the group. Kaori and Watari are forte since they are louder when they are together. When Kaori falls over that background is an abnormal really fast rhythm and if you think back to when she coded at the hospital it kinda makes since. The next thing I noticed is when the empty swing is shown behind it is a blank staff with no rhythm because its blank. I haven't figured out what the other notes in the opening could be but those are the ones that stand out to me. Its really hard to see the meanings behind the music backgrounds if you haven't studied music for most of your life but I thought it might interest some people to know this.
