Ever wondered what I’m packing for a long shoot in a remote environment? This video is for you. I secretly (or not so secretly) love these bag tour videos and so while I’m up here carrying around all this gear I thought it was the perfect time to show you what a documentary cinematographer packs for a normal shoot day. Enjoy!

"Rough around the edges" KZfaq content where you're rigging a two camera talking head in the arctic is such a wonderful way to subtly make the rest of us step up our game 🥲 I'd love to hear your thoughts on F-stop bags vs shimoda. I love my smaller shimoda bag, but I've not really dived into the F-stop line. Would love to see them compared, in such an intense setting as this, from someone with your experience.

That sigma lens is surprisingly good. I have the 50-500 version and it’s actually pretty sharp. My big gripe is that it’s a bit unwieldy when zoomed…but on a tripod for the money you can’t lose for the flexibility it buys you. Great to catch that grizzly bear in full charge and coming straight at you after catching a whiff of the open beef jerky bag. Really catches the drama from a long distance and all the way to 60mm until that bear is right on top of you.

Thanks Luc! Just back from 4 days outdoors capturing birds and this video couldn't have been better timed as I reflect on what's in my bag! The wilderness series of videos have been awesome and right up my alley, a big thank you! If you were shooting with your own gear in the wilderness with a second camera, what would you opt for? I read your comment about the ideal being FX9 or FX6 for the primary depending on your needs and was curious about B-cam thoughts 😊 Thanks again!

I love a good whats in my bag video. Great to see that the FS7 is still being used on larger shows. Even though the camera is old, it still produces great images. I'm still rocking the FS5 and when paired with an external recorder, you're able to get some amazing looking images.

I love a good "What's in my camera bag" video, and this one does not disappoint! Wilderness shooting must be a whole different beast, looks like a very beautiful area to shoot in. I have to get some of that Xtreme bug spray, I hate bugs flying in my face when I am trying to shoot outside 😅.

Thanks for the content - reinforced my decision not to upgrade from my FS7 mk2 (love that variable nd) to full frame but rather to spend some money on glass and some accessories to make operating it more comfortable. Still gives me a brilliant image and with the Metabones not that different a look from a larger sensor. And what a misnomer full frame is - super 35 seems fine for the majority of Hollywood's output with the likes of the Alexa and so far have not heard any complaints about Casablanca being shot on a crop film format. Stay safe and warm - best suggestion - good gloves.

What have you been shooting all of your in-the-field vlogs with? The audio was pretty crisp. Are you lav'ing yourself up on these too? Also, final question 😅 I've been looking for a good chest rig to hold comms and some tools while in the field. Do you like the one you use or have any recommendations there? Been really loving these in-the-field breakdowns! Keep it up 🍻

Loved this. I don’t even shoot wilderness and I’m fascinated. Interested in why you don’t have anything wider than 24mm? Also, you must already know this, but with the Tentacle app, you can sync the Track Es with the Syncs. Been using them all on a feature doc and they work really nicely together. Also, I really like that you can change the name of the Track E in the app and then it adds that name to the front of the audio track file. Really good for quickly knowing what’s on that file in post. Thanks for the great vids. You’re an inspiration.

What's your camp situation like/how many hours a day are you typically away from camp? What you're using feels pretty familiar with what I'd bring on a one day nature/hiking shoot but I'm never over night in the wilderness or more than a few hours hike from my car. Always been curious how larger productions manage when they need to have the crew camp in a location.
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 9 ай бұрын
Every day is different. But in general we're around 20 people and away for anywhere from an hour to 12 hours away from camp. The odd overnight as well, but generally not. Based in a central remote location with a large support staff. The answer is really to have a massive budget - it costs a fortune to keep us all up here for months on end!

Do you usually have the FS/FX cameras kitted out when you travel with them on the move, or do you take off the top handles/side handles when they're on your back? I need a solution for my FX6 that doesn't have me taking the top/side handle on between shots.

Fly an inspire and a mavic 3 for work but still get a lot of "WOW's" for the stuff I shoot on my personal Mavic air 2, good little drones still, and being willing to take a bit more risk with it (in my case because it's my personal one) tends to be what really pushes me to get some cooler stuff more than any other big tech innovations. On that note will probably have to retire it in the next six months because the batteries are starting to fail.
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I love being able to do what you want without being too scared. I'll likely replace with a Air 3 when it eventually dies, just the right price to quality ratio for me

@LucForsyth

I would probably use an fx9, mostly to have the variable NDs and better shoulder ergonomics. If it was really hiking intensive I'd go with an fx6 I think.

Great setup you have there! I've heard a few people now recommend the Sanken mic, and to be honest, I can too. I've just rented it a few times now, but it was great every time. What does your Sukha weigh when fully packed? I've made the experience that I can't realistically go above 20kg, especially when hiking on glaciers or block stones. I have the Sukha myself, but the thing you love about it, that it opens from the back, to be honest, I hate it because it gets warped over time and becomes really uncomfortable after 5 years of use. How are you dealing with the 24-105? I was thinking about renting one a few times now, but ended up sticking to my 24-70 and 70-200 setup after all, more because of the lower F stop. Do you find yourself wanting more out of the 24-105?
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 9 ай бұрын
I'm actually using the Tilopa, the 50L pack and I haven't had any warping issues (had it for about 4 years). I'd say around 20kg is starting to get to about max weight for me as well! There's no real perfect answer for the lenses. Out here I find 24-105 to be a good compromise between everything, then I carry the 60-600 for everything else. It's not the best lens ever, but it's built so well and looks good, plus the IBIS works amazingly well. A decent balance until the make an 18-500 that's also lightweight and has great image quality!

How do you sync up your timecode on FS7 without extension unit?
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 9 ай бұрын
We just do it manually before every 2 camera shoot. But there isn't that much cross shooting on this show, and there's never more than one character on screen at a time so it's not so bad. Would obviously be a lot better with TC and that's always been a major problem with the FS7. Luckily it works for this show!
