I recently discovered that the flashing mode on a torch is useful when trying to establish if a hole you have access to (eg down a wall or in a floor void) comes out where you think it does - a static torch can be indistinguishable from ambient light but a flasing light is a doddle to spot
@mikeZL3XD70293 жыл бұрын
@ David Gill, would you please care to elaborate on this? This sounds intriguing.....
@Bobo-ox7fj Жыл бұрын
@@mikeZL3XD7029 If you have a hole that you're trying to for example run a cable to, and you have physical access you can chuck a torch on the hole pointing into the void, then go back to the place you're hauling cable from and see if you can spot the light. David is saying that having the light flash is better because it allows you to be certain that the light you're seeing isn't coming from another source

My older Polypropylene toolbox split sideways in about 1995... as you say nothing would glue it, but... (not suitable for yours as the hole is on the base!) I actually drilled a series of holes along side the crack and used nylon tyraps to 'stitch' it together as a temporary repair, then used hotmelt glue and an old soldering iron to waterproof it. It's now 20 yrs later and that toolbox is still with me :)

This toolbox kept me guessing the whole way through! Tray 1 - shallow and clean Tray 2 - full of all gubbins and all sorts (suspects John's a secret plumber) Under box - mostly empty I can't complain All three parts of mine are full of rubbish and I have to jump up and down on it to close it most days! =)

+pietkaify I have too, mine is a small box and it also takes some maneuvering to get all the tools and other misc electrical components to fit in there.

John, that was reassuring to see you have a bunch of old familiar tools, which would look like junk to some, and many of us would have replaced by now. My old Tradesman did some excellent work with what looked like a pile of cheap junk. His was stuff mainly pinched from others and the rest looked like shrapnel from WW2.

i am not a electrician but i will do minor jobs around the house like replace light fittings etc. but i hate putting up lights some of them put my blood pressure up sky high. you get no room to put wires into the block then like you say you need 3 hands fix it on to the plate. but if you have not lost the plot and launched it off a wall they look good when they are up. might be just as well i am not a electrician lol

I find the rubber tape, which you briefly mentioned , very useful. It self bonds and is indispensable for a number of splicing, weather-proofing and re-inforcing applications . In my case, the one I use is rated for up to 600V - TEMFLEX 2155.

If I've taken anything away from JWs toolbox and tools, its that they're filthy. I love JW. To me he's 33% electrician/tutor, 33% Blackadder and 33% Basil Faulty. Absolute legend of a man. Thanks JW for education and the laughs over the years

That's the standard issue British Gas toolbox , except they add some black and yellow tape after an old lady tripped over one and died.

The old combination pliers is made by Knipex, the insulation is rated up to 1000 V and it's tested on every produced tool if the insulation is ok. This is the standard for tools that are used by electricians, this is a regulation by the german VDE and Knipex is a german manufacturer. It should have the VDE-sign on a grip. www.knipex.com/index.php?id=161&L=1

@@jwflame It's been a long time, but it looks like a bloody good size and configuration for a toolbox. Do you remember where you got it?
I wouldn't always advocate Festool, but sometimes a few bits and pieces can be money well spent.

Thanks for your videos. I find them very informative even though i don't have much interest in electrics. A suggestion for a clip is to cover electric blanket safety? Quite topical for this time of year as they come into use and sadly accidents increase due to faults. Perhaps you can set one on fire in a controlled environment?

How about a look into solar ( pv ) power as I have a 4kw system installed and have produced 5.3Mw, electricians seem to be living in the "dark ages", love the videos.
@DjResR8 жыл бұрын
+line10cls 4kW is measure of power output, while 5,3MWh is measure of total energy produced. Electrician myself.

Great video John. Self amalgamating rubber tape, one of the most unknown, and underrated bit of useful gear the Electrical industry has never heard off. I first started to use it in the late 1970s, whilst I I was working as an electrician in the electric Neon sign industry, after I saw it demonstrated by a wholesaler in Belfast, whereby they showed that when it was used, it was completely resistant to water ingress. Very useful in outside areas, in connection boxes.

Possible do you should gone back to a real live, make your wife a son - so he can helps you to clean the toolbox monatly. As I was young boy my toolbox looks so bad too. Now, over 30 years older I use more as one toolbox. One for electric, normal things and computer network/telephone, one only for satellite, cable and antenna TV/Radio stuff, one only for bike repair and one for normal repair and telephone stuff. So I can put out some things from one box to put it handy to other place and leave it there - and have copy of them at home.
