The Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, but what's inside its torch? In this video, we take a tour inside the statue to find out.
We'll see how the torch was built, what materials were used, and how the light worked. We'll also learn about the history of the torch, which has been replaced twice over the years.

clarification 1.
Though Bartholdi did place lighting within the torch initially, the idea of adding a series of floodlights to the balcony of the torch was not introduced until much later in the 20th century as the lights that were originally placed inside were not strong enough. However, this idea was scrapped due to the concerns over the pilots. We apologize for any confusion that the wording of the video may have caused.”

A ladder. The balcony of the torch has a total diameter of 12 feet, leaving less than 4 feet for the handle. If an average person can climb up through this part of the statue, there can't be much in there than a ladder. Originally, the flame should work as a light beacon, so there will probably have been some above-average power cables, but it never worked as intended.

I remember when I was kid, I think it was around 1981 I was so excited to see see the statue of liberty. The stairs seemed endless and when I finally got to the top I was kinda disappointed at how small the windows were. I have seen one picture of the ladder, it’s not quite vertical and looks twisted due to the shape and position of the arm. It looks really horrible to climb, particularly if carrying tools and equipment. I have absolutely no head for heights, I don’t even like being one metre off the ground so there’s no way I could climb even the stairs to the crown, never mind the ladder to the torch. I did see the statue from Ellis Island when I visited the US about fifteen years ago. In Alistair Cooke’s television series ‘America’ for the BBC there is an episode about Ellis Island. At the end of this episode he is seen talking to camera while standing in front of a strange bent metal object. I couldn’t make out what it was until the camera pulled back to reveal it as being the torch. At that time, I think the series was made in the ‘70s, this was the original torch with the abbey glass.

@@trenton1190 People performing maintenance, particularly maintenance that involves climbing into/onto high places, don't typically think to take snapshots along the way. Even discounting the damage that led to closing it to the public, there's not much room there. It's not a photo op, if you're there for work. I was a radar ET in the Navy. The view from the SPS-43A radar antenna platform on the USS Forrestal was amazing. However, I have no pictures from up there. I do from "vulture's row", a catwalk on the flight deck side of the island, but not of the much better view from the platform. Why? Because carrying a camera up the ladder along with the tools etc. while doing a job wasn't even a thought. Vulture's row visits were off duty. Ever been up in the statue? I was there in 83, the crown is very cramped itself. You file by the windows in single file, and you don't really stop. At 6'5", I had to duck. The arm is more cramped than that. And you expect a photo op? Why would they?

It wasn't really made clear, but the original torch flame you see in the museum once looked like the new gold plated flame. It was cut up and turned into a light house over the years, ending up with more glass than metal. The changes to the original were so extensive that they could restore the flame, so the made a gold leaf plated replica.

I was going to say that all those pictures from the distant past with the modern flame of the torch must have been photoshopped since I remember the original, glass paneled flame that was illuminated from the inside. However, it seems that the original flame was more like the current flame, so at what point was the original flame changed out? I remember the old, glass paneled flame from a visit in the 70's and then seeing the new flame after the 80's renovation. Strange that there was no mention of when the original flame was changed out for the glass paneled one.

‘Verdigris’ is name of the blue-green colour, which is the result of a natural reaction between copper and the acid content of rainwater oxidizing, already deliberately exploited by european architects for making beautiful bright green pigmented spires and rooftops for generations. It was deliberate, and the same process was used to make the paint pigment of the same name.

Copper will develop that bluing green color over time without the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere. Pollutants had nothing to do with it. The color is called patina. It also offers a protective outer layer against corrosion. Patina is desired on copper and bronze metal objects and should never be removed or cleaned. Any conjecture about pollutants contributing to the patina is misinformation. Otherwise, the video is accurate.

I have to say that the text of the voiceover is just incredibly annoying. If the letters just appeared rather than expanding it would be a lot less annoying. If the text appeared more than one or two words at a time it would also be a lot less annoying. If the text wasn't there at all, and you had to turn on Closed Captions to see it, it would be reasonable. It would also be better formatted, and could be used by people that read other languages. I also wonder just what is infamous about the Stature of Liberty? Do you know the meaning of the word "infamy", or did it just sound like what you hear on any TV "news" report, that also misuses the word?
What's inside the Statue of Liberty?
