I just found this channel, I have worked for Internet service providers since 1998, the Internet hasn't used satellites in a long time because of the latency (the light speed time delay of transmitting a signal up to the satellite and back down to its destination). The hardest part about fiber optic connections is signal loss, so the cables you cut open are connected, at intervals, to repeaters that are also waterproof and designed to work at the bottom of the ocean. The fibers themselves don't really need to be upgraded that often for an increase in speed, it's these repeaters and the endpoints that need to be upgraded to increase the speed of a run. Food for thought.

i like how they taped the ends of the wire to not reveal what's inside as it would defeat the purpose of cutting it open and wasting our time. Nice one lads.
@adtc
@adtc 6 жыл бұрын
Pasha32511 it's taped for protection - metal ends could be sharp. Definitely easier to peel the tape off instead of cutting. But they cut it for the video. I'm sure no one thought "we're gonna tape the ends so you will be forced to cut it".

Being grateful for technology is one thing but your internet being up and running is like water flowing nowadays. We depend on it; our work, social life, entertainment and school are all connected to it. So when it fails to work properly nobody is going to be grateful, they will call their ISP and try to get it fixed. I don't suppose you would wait calmly if you couldn't upload your videos fast and trouble free. Being connected is not free and overpriced in most of the world, if you pay good money for something you also expect it to work properly.

My son is a merchant mariner who works on a cable laying skip. He is an engineer responsible for feeding the cable to lay on it under bottom of the ocean (depending upon the sea depth) at the right tension to avoid injuring workers or breaking/tangling the cable. That's over Simplified but the job requires a 4 year engineering degree and a USCG license he must keep current. It's a very high tech process sand a very unique job. He is out to sea across many continents all the over the world anywhere from 75 days to over 4 months at a time. A very cool job!

Be grateful for the internet…??? Be grateful that the internet is the electronic way to monitor all your activities. This way they don’t have to physically follow you everywhere you go, its all electronic now. Your cell phone tracks your every move, it can hear every conversation to say, it can watch everywhere you go by camera (remote activation) Facebook ( the CIA’s greatest accomplishment) to track everyone and know ALL of your business… Welcome to the digital world where if you own a computer, smartphone or internet, your life is NOT private anymore… (thank you Snowden)

I'm amazed that those cables are thinner than an Ethernet cable, yet they can carry an entire country's worth of data. I thought they'd be more like the cables you see at power plants and such, several feet in diameter plus the protection. Like a sewer line or something. Amazing. How many cables are there running between the different countries of the world?
@MeowMeowDeathRay
@MeowMeowDeathRay 7 жыл бұрын
Because your ethernet cable is running as analog, ie it is a power cable. This cable is fiber optic ie light ray. And to your second question, not as many as you think. Look up a map of it online. An undersea earthquake can cut the internet of a small nation.
@stevenrburgoyne
@stevenrburgoyne 7 жыл бұрын
They can also transmit many different signals at the same time. So light has different wavelengths and using wavelength-division multiplexing they can transmit tons of data through them. As lasers become better and more precise, then can send more data through the cable without having to put a new one down, just change the lasers on each side.

Hey guys I think you guys forgot to follow the right instructions about hazards surrounding Optical Fibber Cable ! I hope this help 1. Wear safety glasses - Every person in the area must wear safety glasses with side shields to prevent fiber shards and splinters from entering the eyes. People, who wear glasses, must still wear safety glasses. 2. Wear protective aprons - All workers should be clothed in disposable lab aprons to reduce the fiber particles that collect on personal clothing. If particles collect on clothing, they will be ingested later through food, drink or breathing in air. 3. Avoid fiber ends - There are reasons to look through a fiber cable, but care must be exercised to ensure that there is visible light coming through the cable. Prior to looking into the end of a cable, use an optical tracer or continuity checker to determine if the fiber is dark. A power meter will verify that there is no light source at the other end of the cable.

I wouldn't make-do with an abrasive blade on a chop saw intended for wood cutting if I were either of you. :-( Use a proper tool (e.g. sawzall for instance)
@WhatsInside

+RS 1990 the blade is specifically for cutting metal, not wood.
@user-rs1990
@user-rs1990 7 жыл бұрын
I know, but the instruction manual states that you should not use abrasive wheels because it's a 'Miter Saw', hence the dust bag. The bag and the lower guard can be badly damaged by the sparks and so rendering the tool's warranty void. There's a difference between an 'Abrasive Cut-Off Saw' and a "Miter Saw' but both work in similar ways. Different blades require different guards. For instance, an Abrasive Cut-Off Saw has a spark deflector at the rear, an adjustable vice for clamping the material and an abrasive cut-off wheel that's guarded only at 180 degrees. A Miter Saw has the blade fully surrounded at 360 degrees by means of a retractable lower guard for safety reasons. A toothed blade that is only half guarded & half exposed can be twice as dangerous as that of an abrasive wheel, hence why they should never be used on saws intended for cutting ferrous metal with an abrasive wheel.

Packed away somewhere I have a foot of a tether from MBARI (Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) which they used to connect their remotely piloted submersible vehicles with the command ship on the surface. It has a bright yellow jacket, with 5 electrical conductors to feed 3-phase power down to the submersible vehicle, and in the core 8 optical fibers. Two were used for ethernet, two for video from the cameras, and there were some dedicated to the control system which piloted the vehicle. The cable was custom made for MBARI by BIW (Boston Insulated Wire). The cable was wound on a large, motorized drum on the deck of the command ship. To maintain connection while the drum rotated, in its center were 5 slip rings for the electrical conductors, and 8 rotating optical joints for the fibers. The was a short piece of cable coming out of the center of the drum on the other side of the rotating couplers which went to the control room below deck. They could not put any twists in the cable as they reeled it in, like the kinks which inevitably seemed to get in old-style telephone handset cords. They had a computer which kept track of how many times the the cable had been twisted by the motion of the submersible and the ship, and they had to sail the submersible and/or the ship in circles as the cable was reeled in to be sure there were no twists!

Great episode! I manufacture medium voltage cable. My job is to install the jacket compound by use of an extruder. I've jacketed cable that is almost 5' in diameter. There is a lot of work that goes into making cable. While cable is not that exciting, it is sort of fun to see what's inside of it if you are not already familiar with it. The big cable I have made is three conductor, full of fillers and fun stuff with a thick jacket on it so that alligators and other critters cannot bite through it.

OK 1 Judging by gauge of those wires, we speak about Very High Voltage in areas of tens of thousands Volts 2 I am pretty sure lady made quite significant error! SFPs are NEVER rated in miles, but ALWAYS rated in metres and km. To support my own claim I would add that 400m rated SFP uses 850nm light, 10km and 40km rated SFP uses 1310nm light, 80km and 160km SFPs are using 1550nm light. I know we can generate longer waves, the limitation is size and laser used in SFPs - SFPs are quite small and they are smaller then most USB Pendrives. I do think those repeaters are 40 miles apart, as this would enforce usage of 80km SFPs and would waste 15km of usable range.

The first Transatlantic telegraph line was completed in 1858. Tiffany & Co purchased all the remaining cable from the ship that had laid it, and cut it into pieces. Some were actually made into jewelry, but most of it was not sold when the cable failed a few months later! The cross section of that cable is pretty similar to this one.

Through those slender cables runs 98% of all modern telecommunications. And they have improved over time: in the age of electric telegraphy and morse code, it would have taken 74 days to send a Harry Potter book (unless it was 'Goblet of Fire' or 'Order of the Phoenix' - those would have taken A LOT longer), but using today's fibre optics, a Harry Potter book takes 0.000006 seconds.

@JohnWatkinsUK
@JohnWatkinsUK 7 жыл бұрын
It looks legit to me, this isn't winning any bend radius records, but it doesn't need to. If the cable was more flexible you would need more of it to go up and down the dips in the seafloor = ££. Stiffer means it will self-support over the dips. Also, there are only 8 cores and it has a power conductor. The only way this isn't an undersea cable is if it's an underlake cable, for a span of more than 15 miles, and even then, because it would still be so short, it would have far more cores than 8.
