A friend of mine and I went to Korea in 2019 and that was our experience too. All love. I think we got some weird treatment for being foreigners, but that was only from one person. Even the older people were really nice to us. We once thought an older man was mad at us, but after a few seconds, he smiled and gave us a thumbs up. He was just checking out our hair, I think. Everyone was so nice to us. I say, if you're Black and want to go to Korea, just go. There are rude people and racist people right here in the US lol

the fact is, that i also scared myself with looking up how South Koreans treat black people. And the reason being, the only things i really found were that the black people were complaining mostly about night life and clubbing. I’m more into the cafes and shops and learning the actual language so i wish i could find someone talking about how regular South Korean life actually is instead of talking about clubbing and partying every single night. I hope i can go to South Korea soon

I (early thirties black woman) have traveled to Korea solo twice so far (both Month+ long visits), and I similarly am not really interested in clubbing and spend a lot of my time honestly just walking around exploring, learning about the culture through museums and temples, quietly enjoying cafes and restaurants etc. I've only had peaceful, positive experiences in Korea. In fact, for how much people note the racism of the older generation, some of my sweetest interactions have been with elderly people. Sorry to ramble. I don't want to disregard the fact that of course there is racism in Korea but I just wanted to share a positive experience as I hope you don't let the negative stories stop you from traveling. I hope you go to Korea someday ^_^

I never went to the club while living in Korea and mostly frequented concerts, cafes, and art exhibits. Though I’m not very active on my own KZfaq, living in a most,y Asian state (Hawaï’i) while also living in Korea for a year and a half gave me a lot of insight, so I’d be happy to personally share that with you! One day I may make a video, but I’m interning and working full time right now haha. All my experiences were not peaceful and fun, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be honest about it. A few weeks or months in Korea is very different than living, working, and studying there, which is where the horror stories you hear, mostly come from. I have some positive things to say as well. Hope this helps!

Here the thing it's not just clubbing. And even it's just about clubs those people are still the same people outside of the club. You are right you need to find someone who is telling truth. I've been there and I got stares and people not wanting to speak to me or sit next to me. But I was prepared for that because I looked up Korean Americans and black women living in SK and they were very frank about what it's like living there. And they were right.

Omg I totally agree with everything you guys said! when i went to korea i did the same thing and researched what other black people’s experiences were, and it made me kinda nervous. but my experience there was everything i had hoped for and more. all my interactions were nice and people willing to help when me and my friends needed it. there was even an ahjumma who literally helped us with our bags and helped direct us through the trains to the airport. she didn’t speak english at all but asked a student to help translate. and she even gave us candy once we were in the train and settled lol. everyone was so nice and and i never felt discriminated against (to my knowledge at least) and i felt comfortable during the day and at night. the daily life is an amazing experience and there’s always something or some place new to visit or do.

Everything they are saying is true!! I was like Lou when I went to Seoul 4 years ago. I had looked up different stories about how they treat black people and even asked/told my close korean friend. He reassured that it wasn't the case. And it really wasn't the hospitality was amazing and everyone was soo nice and sweet. I only noticed one thing on the subway where a lady didnt want to get off at the same doors I was standing so she went to the other side but her lose not mine. I went solo for 2 weeks and had the BEST time that I actually cried on the phone with my mom when I was headed back to airport to come back home lol

Same! I went there alone in 2019 for a few weeks, rented an apartment in a neighborhood and traveled around. Loved it! I didn’t notice ever getting stared at but definitely had some people that wanted take a picture with me. They actually asked permission though. People kept giving me free stuff and complimented my Korean which is okay but not fluent. It was just a really great experience. I mean where else can a single woman walk around at 12:00 at night and be safe? Also the concept of being able to leave your stuff at the table at places and walk away like restaurants and no one touches it took a lot of getting used to.

Unfortunately other countries have bad views on a lot of things and it’s usually caused by ignorant people coming there. I remember my Japanese teacher told us that every year when they do the Japan trip she has to send at least 3 kids home for being disrespectful.

Y'all definitely should do another Korea trip one day. My only suggestion, is for you to take me with you 🤣 For real though, i'm glad you guys made this video, as a black person planning to go visit Korea sometime in the next year or two. This perspective is something i wonder about sometimes and i've found and read some of those horror stories Lou did too. But largely i hear that it's very safe, positive, and the people are very nice. So i'm not too too worried. I just want to learn some Korean before i go lol.

Some random guys at mall and beach were asking for my number too lol😂 i and my best friend never experience racism here . And hey! It’s a homogeneous country where they don’t get much foreigners. The stares are more about fascination as opposed to hate. It’s not the same as going into Harrison Arkansas where they’re homogeneously white but their stare is about hatred and racism towards anyone of people of color. That is the difference. This would be the same as an Asian walking around Ghana or Ethiopia and they would stare out of fascination of someone they don’t see very often

And Koreans do stare a lot, even at other Koreans. It can be for any reason under the sun - awe, admiration, judgment, curiosity, simply interested in looking, cool shirt, whatever. And, they think there's nothing wrong with it, particularly older people. They aren't even aware that they might be doing something they should consider checking. I don't like people looking or staring at me. Bothers me sometimes when I'm in K-town or in Korea but I just try to accept it.

Mexican here and I effing loved Korea. Staying long term without knowing the language is hard but the Koreans I knew were super excited to have me around, wanted to show me everything, and were baffled when I rejected social invites. I just had one bad experience and that was a drunk ajussi following me until I lost him. And that was once. Korea feels like home somehow and somehow I feel safer there than here in my actual home of the US. I would wonder the streets at night over there and no biggie. Can't do it here. Don't feel as right or comfortable. It's weird. But I'm glad you guys had a good experience. I did too. People at the most stared or wanted to touch my hair lol. I worked at a school. It was all very cute rather than hateful or scary.

The challenge with that is most black people use the N word all the time. To each other. People who observe that won't immediately understand that they themselves cannot use that term. But black people use it themselves. That's the disconnect for the average person.

I disagree. SK people listen to music and watch movies/vids with the usage of the N word all the time . Secondly SK ppl are in the western media a lot and we’re in 2022 so they should know not to use the word especially Idols. A black person shouldn’t have to stop talking comfortably and using our own words to protect uneducated people. Plus I don’t know why ppl think SKoreans don’t know what nigga means when they literally have it in their own language. I hate the whole idea of black people constantly having to not act a certain way and talk with caution bc ppl aren’t or Act like they don’t know what Nigga means.

In my situation whenever I was around them or just sitting about minding my business they would smile at me, stare, come up to me and start talking, compliment me, & I even got free coffee from an old man lol but then again as a Mexican I look white. Other than people staring (usually old people and curious little children), everyone was extremely nice, accommodating, and patient. I never experienced any straight up hate or rudeness. First, thank you so much guys for sharing this experience with us, the whole trip was very special. I've lived in other countries where I was the minority and I want to share a few important things I learned along the way. For starters, you /will/ be stared at, it's human nature. You are a new and exotic creature and the locals are "experiencing" you for the first time. It's hardly ever out of malice, it's curiosity, amazement, childlike wonder. Just do your thing and don't mind it. Better yet, smile and say hello in their language. As the guys mentioned, when you spend time in foreign places, after a while, they don't feel so foreign anymore. Just as the language area of the brain grows with every new language learned, making it easier to learn more languages, spending time in different places becomes easier the more you do it. You become comfortable not speaking the language and finding new ways to communicate, eating food you've never eaten before, being surrounded by faces that are nothing like your own, with the new sounds and smells, with the different air you breathe. This is what it means to be a citizen of the world, and in the 21st century, where the concept of nation-states and borders are becoming obsolete, those people who are adaptable and resilient enough to become global citizens are the ones who will flourish and lead us in the right direction. This is an absolutely breathtaking tea house. I feel like I can almost taste the air. 🍵 💜 🌸

I usually don’t comment on videos but, really appreciated this video! I’m planning on teaching English in Korea and minoring in film (I’ll start learning Korean officially next year). I wanted to teach and then do vlogs on the side to show others the culture (and the cultures of the places around it (I heard Japan was like a ferry ride away)) once I finish college. Ive been into kpop since I was like 12 and went spiraling into the culture from there lol I’ve been planning this for a minute but just like I saw those videos talking about the downsides and how people will stare at black people and was really sort of put off by it I mean ik people over there are A Lot more respectful here than in the USA but those vlogs really were making iffy . So it was nice to get some reassurance! I can tell from your videos that the good seems to outweigh the bad by a lot! I really like y’all’s vlogs, you really know how to keep things positive! I wish you guys the best of luck on learning Korean! 우스선배 루선배 화이팅!!

My heart breaks for the foreigners who think that they are getting stared at solely because they are foreign :( I mean, yes that is kind of the case but Koreans have a nasty habit of just staring at other ppl no matter what you are. Im korean but i get stared at by everyone all the time without fail. Like..they will spot you from 100 meters away, start staring, crane their necks and KEEP staring until you are out of sight. As a korean american, i dont understand it fully but i guess its just a culture thing where its not considered rude. still bothers the fuck out of me though. I just want you to know that if you do make the trip here, dont let it ruin your experience - ppl arent doing it to be purposely rude or racist; its just a korean culture thing to stare.

@@mm-uz1gu I’ll try my best not too, I feel like since I watch these types of vlogs and stuff it gives me more insight on what to expect. Also, ik they’re not doing it to be racist I mean I’m mixed (black and white) and frankly speaking in a homogenous country like Korea I’d probably stick out pretty well lol. Ik for some it would probably be there first time seeing someone that looks like me. Its definitely a cultural difference I’d have to get used too. actually going should get me used to it lol

I’m african american and went to Jeju island with two of my college friends in 2019(we were 21 atm) , the scenery was very beautiful, the foods were yummy, i bought some cute souvenir , the club was lit , the local people are okay not too bad and not too friendly just normal , as strangers . Some random guys at mall and beach were asking for my number too lol😂 i and my best friend never experience racism here . And hey! I went to a salon for ginger afro hair also bought some nice wigs and colorful highlight 😍. I didn’t regret anything, i wish i can visit South Korea again in 2023

I've always said that Korea is not as racist as people think. A lot of the "bad" experiences some vloggers talk about are for the most part being too sensitive and overreacting. This one vlogger said Korea is racist because people said she had a ddong-meori (poop head). Um, you're not so special that people would invent new terms just for you. Ddong-meori has been a term Koreans used for a long time to call a bun.

I've been in Korea for around 2 months now, and actually, okay there can be racism against black people, of course, but actually, people stare at you even if you're simply just a foreigner or if you seem the slightest different from other people. I'm white so obviously I wouldn't experience racism, but I've been stare at, sometimes with a LOT of insistance, even an old woman turned around to make sure to rudely look at me from all angles, for no reason at all. Sometimes I get stared at because I'm wearing shorts, or because I'm wearing a tank top, or the slightest bit of a cleavage, or wtv... They never really say anything but just stare. So I like to hold eye-contact whenever I see someone strongly looking at me 😂 because I never know if they're looking cause they think I'm pretty, or stylish, or ugly, or "vulgar", it's generally impossible to tell... but you can receive hate or face prejudice only because of your ethnicity, regardless of your skin color, because some countries have a bad reputation in Korea due to some disrespectful foreigners that came to Korea and acted like they owned the place. And sometimes, on the opposite, if you act with respect, you can see how people look at you with kindness cause most Korean people at the end of the day, are really sweet, you just have to avoid problems with those who are plain assholes (just like everywhere in the world). In Korea, if it can reassure you, even though some people may have prejudices about you, or if they just hate foreigners, they rarely act upon those feelings, you will mostly receive "silent violence" in the way they're looking at you but most of the time, we're quite safe!
