Tim Mosedale has climbed Everest six times and believes that whilst the queues look bad they're often not the reason people die whilst climbing.

Only defence I have for this is the vast majority who do die, are inexperienced climbers or take risks. There's plenty who are told that they should head back down, yet they will keeping going. I feel like if you're an expert like a sherpa, you will survive every time (if you avoid avalanches obviously)

@@nickagger534 You will never survive each time. That is the nature of these climbs. Even the most skilled climbers regularly die to random rock falls, serac collapses and avalanches. Mountaineering is risky and people who spend there lives in the mountains will be very likely to die there.

Assuming you're talking about the US, you don't have to be certified to scuba dive. No one will rent or sell you equipment, fill tanks, etc., without a cert, but that's for liability reasons. In tourist destinations (like where I live), loads of people dive with a "guide," no cert required. 15 minute safety class, and away you go.

@@OkinawaWild I see what you're saying. but that's like comparing Everest to a simple incline. it's more of a comparison of going deep water cave diving without any preparation, obviously a little bit more extreme, but you need a lot more experience to do that. @Paddy le Blanc Jesus! Is it that bad? I've dreamed of going and seeing Everest since I was a small boy (I'm now in my 40s). Only now can I afford the time and money to actually do it. I have quite a lot of hiking experience down the years, but then I think a successful EBC trek really hangs on whether you can take the altitude, and that is a bit of a lottery. I plan to hike in from Jiri too, as I want maximum acclimatisation opportunity, and to experience the same paths as the 1955 expedition. But now I'm kind of depressed to read your comments!

I also visiting base camp a couple of times. This is tragic. I grew up reading about the great expeditions on Everest when reaching the summit meant something: the 1st ascent in 1953 with Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay , the 1963 American expedition and the 1st West ridge ascent of Willie Unsoeld and Thomas Hornbein, the 1975 huge British SW face ascent- truly epic, the 1978 Austrian expedition with Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler and their 1st ascent without supplemental Oxygen to the 1980 solo climb of Messner where I believe he was the ONLY person on Everest at the time, climbing from the North. That may have been the last time a human was alone on the upper mountain. (his girlfriend stayed at basecamp while Messner ascended)

The thing he said about people doing it in 9-12 months. Is so true. And Indian cartoonist and his wife who just did minor treks decided to do Mt. Everest. And sadly he lost his wife on the way down. And his wife could not move. She collapsed. And she called him - 'leave everything, come to me'. And when he was with her, he just sobbed as she faded. And then the sherpa asked him to go down else he will die too, she will be alive and they can get help from camp 4. But she actually died few minutes later. Retrieved her body few days later.

There should be some qualification criteria, like they have in some international marathons.
@mottainai3966
@mottainai3966 5 жыл бұрын
This. I too think that qualification criteria is the better solution, unlike what many here seem to just blindly come to a conclusion that raising the price or reducing the quota on Everest is the fix. If say there is a precondition that you must have at least summited a 6000m plus mountain if not 8000m mountain before, then many inexperienced climbers could get divided in climbing other peaks in Nepal itself. They could attach an attractive combined package with Everest as a final destination. That way tourism revenue will also be generated and traffic will be divided. Many here just seem to assume that the number of climbers allowed is very large and that queue up there is a everyday scene. It is not. That queue happens because during the peak season there could only be say 2 or 3 days when it is appropriate to go to the peak. So, everyone waits for those days and climb all at the same time. So, blaming only the Nepalese government isn't going to do anything. They can not price it like going to moon nor can they allow everyone to climb for free. After all, every country would want a certain revenue out of such a landmark, let alone Nepal. Sorry for the length :)

@@mottainai3966 What you propose is actually brilliant. Just read it and thought that this would be so much better than the system which is currently in place. Dividing the people by their experience and capability to climb a mountain > 8000m! Some rich people should climb other mountains first and eventually return for Everest. I do believe that this queues will normalize somepoint; either through a very bad accident or because it will become more widely spread that climbing Mt. Everest is not that much of an achievment comparing it to K2, Annapurna etc. At least I do hope so (second option).

Perhaps the Nepalese and Chinese governments should charge way higher fees for permissions to climb the Everest during the so called "May window" when conditions for climbers are the best. They could charge lower fees for less convenient dates. The reason so long queues form is the fact that most climbers attempt the summit during that best window in May. This window works just as the high demand seasons for hotels, resorts and flights. When demand is so high prices go up. The higher the price the fewer people end up paying for it. Price discrimination according to climbing seasons throughput the year may thus help this situation. The Nepalese and Chinese governments could also give a price discount (for the permission to climb) to certified climbers and sherpas. The same government could offer the official certification services and even official climbing courses with a cost (for those who want to eventually get the certification and hence a price discount). The governments could only give permissions to climb to those certified climbers thus limiting the number of climbers during peak window and thus preventing unexperienced climbers from climbing and putting the life of other climbers at risk.
@akraft1630
@akraft1630 5 жыл бұрын
R. R. I liked your idea on principle. Perhaps the permit fees should be experienced based. China already has a much bigger hurdle to clear a summit permit. The notion that a climbing windows can be chosen is a misunderstanding of high altitude climbing. The mountains decide when it is time to climb them. Everest is only really doable within those few days in May due to the jet stream and storms that make it impossible at any other time.
@angelxoxo4936
@angelxoxo4936 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure it works that way mate. The May window is when the expedition companies want to summit because it’s the safest. The window is so small because the other seasons make the summit not even reachable. It’s not like it’s high hotel season, if they don’t go during this window chances of death increases exponentially. Look into why this is the window and if the summit is even achievable at other times.

positive comment (because everything I'd read from this video sounds so negative): I want to climb Everest - I don't have the necessary skills right now but climbing Stok Kangri in 2019 (search it up, it's such a beautiful mountain) has made me realise my passion. I want to learn the skills, and be the best mountaineer I can be so that I can stand on top of the world - that's just a nuts feeling. But you've got to enjoy the journey - it's not straight to Everest but you can enjoy doing all the other beautiful beasts first!

yeah.. everest has become that worn down party clown, that no one really wants, except the kids who have never experienced a clown before. k2, annapurna, kangchenjunga, those are in my and experienced mountaineers better now. Everest are ruined by inexperience and business.

Every serious mountaineer considers Everest a relatively easy mountain. Sure its the tallest and the death zone creates issues but on the South Col the terrain is otherwise easier than most the other 8000m mountains and with all the sherpas and climbing crews there is no shortage of supplies, food, and nice camps. The North Col is quite a bit harder but K2 and Annapurna I are the real challenges that true elite mountaineers see as the ultimate goal.

@Saint Scanderbeg it is for the rich already... so there would be no big difference in the ethics. I agree with what you are saying. But imho there are still too many people up there. I've always dreamt of climbing Everest and I've summited quite a few smaller peaks but the queues and unqualified people make me never want to go. I've been mountaineering for a few years and I'm still not ready for an Everest expedition yet these middle aged rich folks climb one 2000m mountain and think they can do it. They put undue risk on the other climbers and on the sherpas. They should face murder or at least manslaughter charges every time someone dies due to their queues and inexperience.

The environmental toll these tourists leave behind is another rarely told tragedy on it's own. Piles of debris, oxygen bottles, human waste left everywhere. I watched a great documentary about the Indian Army efforts to clean up the mountain. Sadly it was the year of the earthquake and their efforts turned into a rescue mission instead and they were only able to clean up base camp. Luckily no one from their team died. Hopefully they will make stricter enforcements of what you take there you must bring down. I know that will be harder to do in the death zone, but leaving these other places a landfill is unnecessary and shows just how these tourist view their place on that mountain and in life, it's really sad.

There should be a qualification for people wanting to attempt everest. 5- 6000m peaks, 3- 7000m peaks and an 8000m before you can qualify to climb. It will reduce numbers and seperate those who are serious and those who arent.

Not raising the fee or cutting the quota but I think it would be better if Nepal government sets certain qualification to climb Everest. Like say u should have climbed at least a 6000m plus mountain before if not a 8000m one. They could then arrange attractive combined packages of Everest and other smaller peaks in Nepal. That way if a person is a passionate mountaineer one would never try Everest first anyway, so trouble of climbing mountain twice goes out of the equation. They would enjoy it more with a cheaper single package than doing it twice separately. Doesn't need to be done in the same year. This way the government already has idea of how many might climb in coming years. This will help when deciding to give permits to others. The revenue will be there but more importantly the traffic gets divided. They can then prioritize these package holders to climb Everest. If beside these, the number wanting to climb is still too many they can regulate frequent climbers who are increasingly just becoming an advertisement tool from sponsors. Just a quick suggestion from a keen follower of the story, no other qualifications besides that :)

@Dojocho you'd have to be a moron to willingly go fight in a war where they tried to conscript you. Would rather go to prison than be forced by a government to go fight their battle for them. It's not about being "brave" or "cowardly", it's about the liberty to decide for yourself if you want to risk your own life. Nobody can force me to go to war if I don't want to. People that meekly went when the government forced them to instead of standing up for their own rights don't have any more respect than "cowardly" draft dodgers.

Basically Everest is a challenge because you will die without Oxygen. That's it. It's a simple climb other than the altitude so anyone with money in decent shape can do it because the Sherpa's do all the real work. Make everyone carry their own supplies up and down, that will end queues and will be the last time a non Sherpa ever climbs the mountain.
@peterhall6656

Climbing Everest was an achievement when it was first done but now it is an embarrassment. There is this big thing called the ocean. Want a challenge without queues? Swim 100 km in a 4 metre swell. Body surf St Nazare (actually there could be a small queue since I know someone who has body surfed a 20M+ wave there, but you wouldn't need to wait long). Free dive to 200m . No queues for that. Climb El Capitan bare handed with Alex Honnold on your back. No queues for that one either.
