Actually Tina said no comment when he died. She was more tactful than that. In her 2nd book "My Love Story" she said this: "Of course, the press bombarded me with questions, looking for a headline and hoping I would issue some kind of statement. But I kept a silent and respectful distance. Ike was totally gone from my life. It was like hearing a person I didn't know anymore, a person I hadn't known for 30 years, in fact. When I realized that I didn't feel anything, I understood that I had truly moved on."

My own sister was being abused by her boyfriend and kept it all a secret. But one day me and my brother dropped in on her unexpectedly. Caught the whole situation. Well, after kicking his ass, we called the cops, charges were pressed and she came and stayed with us and our girlfriends in Florida. Eventually, she met someone else, a lifeguard ironically, and she's been great for 11 years now and they have two beautiful kids 7 and 5. To both the ladies and men, you don't have to be some insecure scumbags punching bag. Also, great reaction guys. 👍

Two fun facts about Laurence Fishburne - 1. He claimed that following his performance in the film, it took years for black women to stop giving him the "evil eye". 2. When Ike Turner saw the movie he told Fishburne, "you got me", meaning he did a good job of portraying him.

I remember watching an interview of Tina with Cher on Oprah and how shocked she with the audience were when both women told them that despite millions they made as musicians etc, their husbands Ike and Sonny controlled everything down to their bank accounts, checks etc That they’d have to ask them for money and were put on specific allowances. Mainly, so they couldn’t have enough especially in Tina’s case to have enough to leave or get away from Ike when they were very young in their careers. Tina and Cher both said they didn’t even know how to do their own finances or handle a budget or checking account themselves until they were divorced and out of their marriages. It’s quite sad knowing how abused in many ways and dependent those men made them be on them.

You guys hit the nail on the head, her voice and persona were made for rock music and Ike and his Star Trek haircut held her back with his mediocre songwriting. That’s why Proud Mary was such a huge hit for them, because it had that high energy and tempo that her vocals were made for. That’s also why What’s Love Got to Do With it was such a smash hit for her because she finally was able to control her sound and she knew what kind of music she was meant to make. Ike had a tragic beginning as well. When he was around 5 his father was attacked by a white mob and died. Shortly after his father's death he was physically and sexually abused by multiple people. And I believe he developed a complex about people leaving him since he had his material taken and used before and received no credit. Since the movie is just loosely based on her story they don't mention that she was dating and had her oldest child with another band mate. Tina said she thought Ike was ugly and they were more like brother and sister and later friends with benefits which led to her getting pregnant by him and him having to drop Lorraine. And she recalls that he was abusive to Lorraine and he was already abusing her when he proposed so she was scared to turn him down. That has to be so scary.

I got to see her in concert during her comeback era. She’s one of those rare artists who actually sounds better live than recorded. She was called the female James Brown. Sadly she’s pretty much retired now. She’s in her 80’s. Her health took a downward turn. She’s been through a stroke, intestinal cancer and a kidney transplant since retiring. There’s a real good documentary about her on HBO max. She also been grieving her sons death. He committed suicide a few years back. One thing this movie didn’t show case was the years of struggle she went through after leaving Ike. She struggled for about a decade doing lounge acts, Vegas, and the Oldies circuit. She signed with Olivia NewtonJohns manager. He got her a contract with capital records. They wanted her to do stuff like the pointer sisters were doing but she wanted to do Rock n Roll. A middle aged black woman doing Rock wasn’t something they were willing to get behind because they didn’t see a market. Capitol would only market her in Europe. She recorded a remake of Al Greenes Let’s Stay Together. It was released in the UK and became a hit with British audiences. A New York DJ was in England and he loved her remake. He brought several copies of the record back to the States and gave it Air play then it started to rise on the charts here. That got her record company’s attention and that’s what lead to her come back album Private Dancer. She originally hated The song What’s Love Got To Do With It. And had to be talked into recording it. She thought it sounded to Pop for her. It was reworked with her in mind into the version it became. When it hit number one she was the oldest person to ever have a number one hit in America. She held that record until Cher hit in the early 2000’s with her song Believe.

Is it really crazy?? First of all 33 and 35 aren't anywhere close to being old. Secondly, lots of people Hollywood look younger than their actual years because they have great trainers and stylists and work out constantly and have good eating habits.

I love how Tina didn’t care for the royalties from the songs made with Ike. She said he can keep it all except her stage name. Cause she knew she could make it without him. And she was right. Ike never reached that level again (I did hear he made songs but never reached stardom)

Angela Bassett did the damn thing for sure in this movie but Laurence Fishburne, wow! I mean he played that sadistic man so well. No matter how hard it is to watch some of the moments in this movie, I have still watched it several times over the years because it is so well made and the cast is stellar!

Since this movie came out Ike has passed and i think the oldest son has. Tina is married to a beautiful man that treats her like the queen she is and they live in Switzerland. Those muscular legs of hers gave her one heck of a contract with leggs pantyhose. She insured her legs for millions of dollars. Can find her commercials here on KZfaq. Thank you for doing this. Love to see you reacting to this. It's definitely a classic. One point of contention... Ike was actually very talented. He's credited with recording the FIRST rock & roll song EVER. He definitely had a problem. He was an abusive drug addict. That overshadowed all his talent because he was a great songwriter and producer. Tina is just brilliant. Nothing like her before or since.

Ike actually thanked Lawrence for his portrayal of him, I remember a tv interview he did when this film premiered. Everyone says Lawrence and Angela should have won the Oscars that yr, and that's No Cap, I agree. I remember watching the Oscars, nothing against the other nominees but these two really should've won. Your thoughts on Ike were dead on, he couldn't make it without Tina. Ike had talent BUT he didn't have the IT factor to get him over the top or to the top. Instead of love it lead him to insecurity, jealousy & of course drugs.

The minute Tina finally runs from Ike for good and that score hits, I'm usually bawling my eyes out and screaming at my TV "Go!!! Run!!!" Tina at first, hated "What's Love Got To Do With It?" but her manager, Roger Davies, pushed her to do it, telling her that it was a guaranteed hit! Also, in 1981, she was offered the song "Physical" but she turned it down, feeling that the lyrics were too dirty for her, and suggested that Roger pass the song on to one of his other clients, a very good friend of Tina's, and that was Olivia Newton-John.
