What's My Line? - A Tribute to Debbie Reynolds [CLIPS VIDEO]

2016 continues to be a thoroughgoing joy right to the bitter end, with the recent news of the sudden and unexpected deaths first of Carrie Fisher, then hours later, of her mother Debbie Reynolds. Both, truly, were beloved figures to countless millions of people across all generations. Debbie was, in fact, voted as one of the top ten all-time favorite mystery guests in the 17 year history of WML by the members of our Facebook group. This video is in tribute to them both.
I always think it's good, rather than just wallowing in sadness when a beloved celebrity passes, to spend some time remembering the joy that these folks brought to our lives by revisiting performances like these from when they were in their prime, as Debbie certainly was in her classic WML appearances. I defy anyone not to laugh at Debbie's vocal pyrotechnics in these clips.
R.I.P., Debbie and Carrie. You will both be missed.

What people seem to not really notice about others, like Debbie Reynolds, is that she was a good natured person.This goodness shined, beyond being talented and very pretty.

Great compliation, and a worthy tribute! Notice that when Dorothy (as MG) realizes that Debbie is closing in on her identity, she switches to the Gabor-like accent that Debbie used so frequently. Clever twist on DK's part.

I was born in the 50's so I grew up with Debbie Reynolds, always liked her movies. The first one I actually saw in the theater was How The West Was Won, I admired her spirit and tenacity as Lily Prescott. That movie was a really big deal then because it was shot in wide-screen Cinerama with three monstrous cameras. And it was a long movie, that meant lots of popcorn and even a candy bar after the intermission. And I was in my 20's when Star Wars came out, I was a big fan of her daughter Carrie Fisher as well. I will always admire them both.

My first thought, upon hearing of Debbie Reynolds' unbelievably tragic passing, was of all of her incredibly charming and delightful appearances on "What's My Line?". As Pat Gawne had said, your work really is amazing, and I thank you so, so much for posting all of these wonderful videos, as well. ♥ (I'm certain that everyone involved in the series would be quite pleased to know that so many people, to this day, were still enjoying their wit, talent, class and humor, too. :-) )

"Coke Time," starring Eddie Fisher, was a 15-minute musical variety show that ran on NBC from April 29, 1953 to February 22, 1957. Regulars included Jaye P. Morgan, Don Ameche, and Fred Robbins. The orchestra was conducted by Alex Stordahl and Carl Hoff. Some have stated that the show was cancelled after Eddie abandoned Debbie. That is not true. NBC (and the primary sponsor, Coca Cola) cancelled the show a full year before Elizabeth Taylor's husband, Mike Todd, was killed in an aircraft accident (March 1958). It was only after Todd's death that Eddie made his ill-advised decision to console the aggrieved widow. The nation turned on Fisher with a fury. I remember this very well. My sincere thanks for this upload. Efforts like yours make You Tube a most enjoyable resource. Well done!

When I heard the news yesterday one of the first things I thought of was these WML appearances, and in point of fact I shared two of them with a very close friend who, like me, is a long-time DR fan. I saw her show in Las Vegas back in the mid-'80's. She would've done anything to please her audience. I might have guessed that you would put together this collection. Thank you so much for this!

Yes, Eddie's show was sponsored by Coke. When Eddie and Debbie were on Person to Person, they showed their garage which was full of cases of Coke. I was so jealous!

Linda Blair Ah, even better. So I bet, then, that this episode of "Person to Person" aired not long before this episode. According to the imdb, there was a "Person to Person" with Debbie and Eddie on Feb 10, 1956, which fits perfectly, and makes perfect sense of Bennett's comment. Thank you!! You are right about celebrating the joy of these multitalented people. The WML clips have been among my favorites for several years because I discovered how intelligent and creative the mystery guests often were. Debbie is simply the best! I have watched her repeatedly because she makes me laugh out loud; I marvel at her versatility as an actress and comedienne. I share them with friends and family so that they will also experience the laughter and the talents of this extraordinary woman. Thanks so much for the comment, Douglas. I know it helped me feel a bit better to rewatch and edit the clips for this video. The news was just such a double shock. Since the news broke, according to KZfaq's viewership reports, something like 50,000 people have watched the various WML videos with Debbie Reynolds, which is staggering by usual viewership standards. I hope it's not pompous for me to say that it makes me very happy and more than a little proud to know that these videos provide comfort and joy to people, most especially at times of loss like this-- and we all know this isn't going to be the last time, too.

Allow me to add my thanks for this, Gary. One of my first thoughts upon hearing the news was that I would seek out her WML appearances. I remembered them being delightful. I'm too young to have had a crush on Debbie (Carrie's metal bikini was more my era), but every time I see these shows, I'm reminded that she was not only the cutest thing ever, but sweet and sharp too.

"Like Morton Downey, the Irish tenor who had just retired from his professional career to devote the rest of his life to Coca-Cola, Fisher and his new wife, Debbie Reynolds, attended Company conventions as part of the Coca-Cola family. In 1955, they spent their honeymoon at an Atlanta bottlers' convention, where fresh-faced Debbie Reynolds, holding her new husband's hand, stepped to the microphone an announced, "I don't drink Coke, it's bad for your teeth. I drink milk". And she smiled beatifically. After a moment of stunned silence, the bottlers burst into laughter. They thought Reynolds was just being funny. It was inconceivable to them that anyone would make such a statement in such a place. (She was serious, and she didn't like Fisher's amphetamine addiction either. They divorced a few years later, after Fisher's Coke contract ran out and in the wake of his affair with Elizabeth Taylor)." That's from a book called "For God, Country, and Coca-Cola". This surely is the incident to which Bennett is referring, as I'm sure it would have made the papers. Imagine honeymooning at a bottlers' convention!

Very interesting-- Linda Blair, in another comment here, also had an interesting theory that Bennett's comment was in response to a "Person to Person" episode they were on, which, as it turns out, aired just a couple of months before this show. Both sound reasonable to me, but regardless, your comment offers an interesting story on its own merits that I hadn't heard before. Thanks for sharing it.

@@WhatsMyLine Tangentially, as an aside, Carrie Fisher always drank Coca-cola. In a UK interview on you tube, she is given a blind taste test of a new cola to compare to classic Coke, even joshing proclaiming to be an afficiando/a. This personal quirk, I now wonder if not a subtext in psychological family brand loyalty.

Eddie Fisher was, for a time, the host of "Coke Time" on radio and television. It was usually a 15 minute program but sometimes 1/2 hour. It was mostly songs.

At old age, the stress of losing a child/spouse can give your a hemorrhagic stroke/massive heart attack. A man told me that after this father died from sudden illness at 72, her mother got sick suddenly and died 2 months later from a hemorrhagic stroke at age of 70 in 2010. She died at 84 from a hemorrhagic stroke, just 1 day after her daughter Carrie Fisher.

There was indeed a TV series called "COKE TIME WITH EDDIE FISHER" that aired from 1953 to 1957. It was a 15 minute music variety show on NBC. Back in those days there were 15 minute shows to round out 15 minute news shows at that time.

I have watched a lot of these episodes and remember the show from when I was a kid. John Daly had a great gig in that show. He was so classy and articulate with every guest whether or not they were famous or ordinary people. Certainly not the sexiest guy but his personality was very attractive and charming.

We all were! I can honestly say that I've never laughed so hard, consistently, with any other WML Mystery Guest. And I'm blessed to have been alive for most of her career (I'm not old enough to remember the "Eddie Fisher Era", and it's probably just as well.) We miss you, Debbie!

Thank you for these clips. Debbie's WML appearances are not my favorites, but I will love her forever for "Singin' In The Rain," "Hit The Deck!" (I became a fan when I saw this in the spring of 1955, when it first came out, I think) and for buying up Hollywood artifacts and saving them from destruction. And I loved the multi-talented Carrie for "Wishful Drinking." I was gutted over Alan Rickman's death on January 14 and now this!

Eddie Fisher was not only a Coke spokesperson, he was so connected with the brand that they gave him a percentage of the profits from the Pasadena bottling plant, I believe until his death.

I'm DYING at 3:50!! 😆 😆 Maybe it's my generation (born 1987) but when I hear Debbie Reynolds, I immediately think Charlotte's Web. I first heard that book read to me by my second grade teacher, and watched the movie afterwards. Been in love with it ever since!

Lauren I had no idea; I haven't watched "Charlotte's Web" in years, but my memory of the voice of Charlotte is that it certainly wasn't a straight, unaltered Debbie Reynolds voice, but real voice acting. Just one more reason to love her.

Janice Murphy ....I loved that movie too. wasn't that the one where she plays a delinquent? Then marries the man who took her in? She was such a DELIGHT!!
