Arlene never looked lovelier than on this episode. She was 52 years old here (born October 20, 1907).

SuperWinterborn I think I know what you mean. Sometimes he's teasing about it, but many times he is sincerely trying to be fair, but the panel doesn't always see it that way at the time.

Totally agree-- although in rare cases, very rare cases, I think it can be said he does mischievously mislead the panel on purpose. But 99% of the time, what he says is very accurate, just impossible to decipher for the panelists who can't yet understand what hair splitting distinctions he's making!

Betty was 37 here if I did the math right. Young, certainly, but she had already been in television more than ten years at this point. If her Wikipedia article is correct, she was nominated for an Emmy in 1951, which is more than 20 years before her first appearance on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, almost 35 years before The Golden Girls, and almost 60 years before she hosted Saturday Night Live and starred in Hot in Cleveland. The length of her TV career is impressive. In fact, if anyone ever does a remake of the Back to the Future movies, they should show the characters watching Betty White on TV in 1955 (Life with Elizabeth), and in 1985 (The Goldern Girls), and in 2015 (Hot in Cleveland).

I do believe you're correct this time. There have been a couple of videos where people have thought they spotted her without the heart necklace, but it just turned out that it wasn't very visible in most shots. This time, I think you've found one where she's not wearing it. My guess is that it just wouldn't have looked right with the other necklace, too. Interesting!

What's My Line? & Stephanie McCoy I have noticed that during the past several months worth of episodes, there have been several times that Arlene was not wearing her heart necklace. In some episodes you can see it peeking out beneath a larger necklace, but in some of these "recent" episodes, I don't think she was even wearing it under the larger, more elaborate necklaces, and it is obvious that she's not wearing the diamond heart in this episode. Previous dates that I don't think she wore the heart necklace include Oct. 11, 1959 (& it at least wasn't visible on Oct.4, 1959 either); Nov. 15, 1959 (in which she's wearing a teardrop-shaped diamond pendant with a pearl necklace), Jan. 3, 1960 (though the much larger necklace she has on could possibly be covering the heart completely), Feb. 7, 1960 (I think it's the same necklace as Jan. 3, but we get a clearer view of it); Feb. 21, 1960 (though it could be tucked beneath the high neckline of her dress); March 6, 1960 (her even larger necklace here would hide the heart completely, even if she were wearing it). If you're so inclined, take a look and see what you think. (Am I nuts to be paying such close attention to this stuff? ...Probably! :p) Oh, and there is another episode from within these same few months (I forgot which one & don't want to go back to look for it again), in which I think she is wearing the heart necklace together with the same necklace she has on in this episode.

I don't think they ever did. there was times that there were three men instead of the boy girl order, but I never seen the women sit next to each other. Betty talked about Arlene in one of her books saying how sweet Arlene was in the behind scenes when she appeared on this show. Arlene was on Password against Betty couple of times before. I kinda think Betty, Alan and Arlene was friends at some point. : )

Stephanie McCoy aw, that's so sweet! did betty say anything else about arlene? or more of an aside as far as her guest appearances? i do love betty and arlene's appearances on Password together. They both are quick witted and so charming. and i'm pretty sure they were all friends. i saw a description that betty was interviewed for the documentary made about arlene. shame they never let dorothy and arlene sit next to each other. they were cute when they passed notes to each other or needed some girly help.

Lorna Badeo Not much else I read about in her Betty's book except when she was reminiscing about games shows and how Arlene was the first woman to be a tv game host because even Betty was a game host. But to go along what she said about Arlene behind scenes, She liked everybody, Bennett, Dorothy, Daly, and was super happy about appearing on the show because she religiously watched What's my Line. But she excluded Arlene out of everybody and seemed to talk about how nice she was to her when she was a guest panelist for the first time. She also talked how the other panelist was somewhat more serious than Arlene.

They never sit the women together ...which is silly..boy girl boy girl...lol

I think that's Bennett's laugh.

Or the stereotypes about gender roles in the 1950s came later on and these shows are like a time capsule that dispels many of the myths. Women weren't nearly so oppressed in the 1950s as the feminists made out. Nothing like making people feel marginalized and victimized to rally them to your cause..
