Rosemary Smith drove a Sunbeam Alpine. That was the car used by Maxwell Smart in the TV series Get Smart, which premiered a few months before this episode. The car driven by Max was actually called the Sunbeam Tiger, which was the V-8 version of the Alpine.

Mark Goodson was a surprisingly clever panelist. If anyone at all suspected him to cheat, then they also had to consider him a genius, only judged by the way he both asked and drew his conclusions. Well done.

All the ladies on this show, both on the panel and the contestants were attractive. Arlene Francis is a very smart woman on this show and all the other WML shows.

I didn't want to re watch these episodes just yet because I wasn't ready to let go of Dorothy. But I wanted to watch every episode that Harry Belafonte was in since he died Yesterday. After this one I will have re watched them all.

I feel exactly what you're saying, Debra. It was difficult for me to watch the episodes without Miss Dorothy-who was hands down my favorite panelist-and now it is still a bit difficult but I still enjoy the show very much.

Planning this episode must have been a logistical nightmare. How do you keep the identity of the guests (celebrity and non-celebrity alike) secret from the boss for at least a week if not more? They would have needed to create an entirely separate operation for one show and then hope during a winter that had already seen more of bad, snowy weather, that any of the planned challengers wouldn't be prevented from arriving at the studio on time. And everyone had to make sure they didn't slip, whether Mark Goodson was there in person or on the phone. At least back in 1966 they didn't have to worry about accidentally including him on the wrong e-mail.

The only time Ginger Rogers was on panel, and maybe also the last time she and Bennett Cerf were seen together on WML. She did appear as MG in season 5 of Syndie WML, but that is all I know about her post-1966 appearances.

The first two contestants passed away within three days of each other in December 2023 - Rosemary Smith on December 5, and Verda McCartney on December 8.

H Belafonte was an icon, a superb entertainer and activist for the civil rights movement. He shall be missed but never forgotten for we lost him yesterday, may he forever RIP.

They had to be rather sneaky to have Harry Belafonte as a mystery guest when you would think Mark Goodson would typically have been involved in the negotiations of the celebrity talent.

Goodson-Todman is easily my favorite game show Production Company. I've seen and loved many of their games, even the 80's and 90's revivals. Before Merv Griffin came along with "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" in the 80's, Goodson-Todman were the game show kings of first-run Syndication, along with the new "What's My Line" and "To Tell the Truth", the new "Beat the Clock", the new "Price is Right" (w/Dennis James) and 70's and 80's "Family Feud", just to name a few. To me, Goodson-Todman is to game shows, what Nintendo is to video games, and what the Beatles are to music.

In Germany The Adaption runs 34 years. They never Changed The Host and The Team. The final Show was in 1989. The Host died in the same year. Harry Belafonte was also The guest Star in "Our" Adaption.

Thank heaven Daly and panel found a way to dispatch the race car driver quickly. All that funny mouse morbidity went on for a rather long 10 minutes and threw the timing of the whole episode right off.

I know I only found this channel a few months ago, but I have to say something here about mice and fur vs. Hair. My personal experience is fur based on texture from having kicked one across my office while wearing sandals and carrying an armload of paperwork to use for preparing some production reports. Fur. End of discussion.

At age six, I could sing kinda many of Harry Belafonte's songs. His daughter SHARI briefly WENT to grammar school with my brother. DAY-O, DAYAYO! DAYLIGHT COME, AND ME WANN GO HOME LOVE ALL. HIS SONGS TO THIS DAY. HE IS A REALLY GOOD HUMAN BEING TOO. (AGE 92?)

I found an interest article on Ms.Smith, but I can't get the link to it to stick here. She was born in 1937 so she was 29 years old the year this episode was conducted. The article was written in 2010 and it said she was still driving cars at that time so at age 73 she was still driving. It would appear she is still alive in 2015, but no idea if she's still driving now. She had a very successful career in racing. She initially wanted to be a fashion designer, but turned to car racing.

Rosemary Smith (1937-2023) was a rally car driver who set an Irish land speed record in 1978 and, in 2017, was the oldest person to drive an 800 brake horsepower car.

I just looked up Rosemary Smith and today is December 12, 2023 and she just died on Dec. 5, 2023. She was a very lovely lady.

Mark Goodson: Solid. Not much to complain here. Ginger Rogers: I don't know, I'm rather mixed. On one hand, she asked good questions, but often her guesses were incorrect than they were correct.

@Beatnik Speaking of Ginger, I actually wonder if she hated Harry Belafonte? He was blacklisted, and she was a very vocal and outspoken supporter of the Hollywood blacklist. Joseph Losey called her "one of the worst, red-baiting, terrifying reactionaries in Hollywood".

The accent probably did help to fool them a bit, even though they knew it was fake, considering that he lasted a while before his very distinct voice was recognised.

Diane Newman someone wrote that John Daly thought it more important to comment on the woman’s beauty than her talent and I replied that they all commented on her beautify, noting that in my opinion , it was not meant to be offensive, but that’s just my take on it, other may feel differently.

No you've misinterpreted what he said. He was saying that she should not only be congratulated on what she does but even more so or 'more importantly' for the 'loveliness and beauty that you bring'. That is not belittling what she does but broadening her qualities to encompass how she carries herself and indeed her whole being. In fact his words are very well chosen and much better than the usual 'ladies and gentlemen, the most adorable and lovely Miss so-and-so' that presenters/interviewers normally wheel out. I would say Daly was, as usual, very eloquent here.

What could possibly have prompted Arlene to ask that gorgeous woman if what she does involves a vehicle with wheels? That was totally out of left field. What's My Line 2.0, which was hosted by Wally Brunner, frequently had a segment where the panel would answer questions the audience submitted in writing on cards. I recall one time an audience member accused the panel of cheating in the question. Arlene really took umbrage. I understand where that audience member was coming from because Arlene seems to pull things from thin air, like with that beautiful lady race car driver.

@F Je. The panel never cheated. They just ask extremely logical questions. Arlene Francis knew that a lot of times WML likes to have contestants who usually have occupations that don't fit their appearances. Then, she just took it from there. I watched a lot of episodes where the panel wasn't even close to guessing the occupation of a contestant after 10 tries. That woman in the audience was just jealous of Arlene's intelligence.

I saw that episode. Arlene responded she has been doing the show for 20 years. She knows how to play. There are staple questions. You hear them over and over. When you have a person who makes false teeth for cows you learn to hunt for or rule out such obscurities. Dorothy Kilgallen often likes to compare things to a telephone booth the way Steve Allen does for a breadbox. She only started doing that after there was a contestant who sold telephone booths stumped the panel.

@@lynettepalecek3141 I always suspected that the panel never cheated and for the most part, panel members were quick to disqualify themselves from guessing if they knew or were acquainted with the guest beforehand. However, one episode in particular was curious to me and that was the one where John Q Lewis filled in on the panel for Fred Allen one night, and Allen happened to be the celebrity mystery guest. Lewis immediately called the guest "sir" before ascertaining the guest's gender, and then subsequently guessed Allen on his next round of questioning. Quite suspicious, I thought.

@@deejay8403 I watched that episode that you're talking about. Steve Allen gave himself away with his voice. He couldn't hide the fact that he was a man. Robert Q Lewis guessed that the mystery guest was Steve Allen after a few questions. I have also seen Robert Q Lewis disqualify himself when he knew who the mystery guest was.

There had been black panelists, but not many, before 1966. In fact, Harry Belafonte was the first, in the late 50s.

These panelists were very smart people. Stupid people routinely accuse smart people of cheating. You're saying a lot more about yourself than about Cerf.
