Col. Swindall also flew President Kennedy's body back to D.C. after his assassination. Col. Swindall died in 2006.

The reference to Arlene Francis leaving for Germany for several weeks was so she could co-star with James Cagney in the comedy "One ... Two ... Three" which was filmed in West Berlin.

When I was in the Air Force President Johnson had mechanical problems with AF1 and they had to make an emergency landing at the base I was stationed at to change an engine. This happened at night with no one on duty basically and I had the great pleasure of not only replacing the engine AND trimming (tuning up) the new one but to also meet the president. All the while under the strict watch of several armed guards with live ammo. The most luck thing I got to do was before they reboarded President Johnson I was treated to a full tour of the plane as well as being informed that it was the same plane that sadly had carried President Kennedy home from Texas. It was a story that I could not tell anyone until after the AF1 was replaced and one that I will NEVER forget

Thank you for your service. Was Colonel Swindall still the CO of the AF1 unit at Andrews at the time? I know that unit has undergone some name changes and possibly some unit structural changes, but doesn't the CO of the unit remain with them during a president's term in office? Initially, the USAF had three VC-137s. One is at the Reagan Library in California. I do not know where the other two are, I imagine the museum in Dayton at Wright-Pat.

Too bad you didn't have the pleasure of meeting President Kennedy, instead of his evil successor

Snaggle Toothed Apparently you have not seen Ken Burns’ “Vietnam” and you seem unaware of the Johnson family ownership of Bell helicopter company at the height of the Vietnam war. You also seem unaware of Johnson’s dubious combat war record. The list is long. Johnson is called “evil” for good reason.

@@dpm-jt8rj Yes JFK's SAM26000 is in Dayton OH at USAF Museum the Eisenhower 707 SAM 970 (58-68970 at the Seattle's Museum of Flight after its 1996 retirement ) SAM 971 (58-68971) was SAM 971, is at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona It was a backup, never carrying a sitting president and thus never an Air Force One. It did, however, become famous as Freedom One, the airplane that brought the American hostages home from Iran in 1981.SAM 972 was scrapped in 1988 after being used for spares due to severe weather damage after it was retired from service and SAM 972 (58-68972)

Flying back to Washington from Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, Lt. Col. Swindal took it upon himself to fly Air Force One higher than it had ever gone. That was his tribute to President Kennedy.

And yet he let his president die on his watch. What a piece of shit.

@@craigsimpson1230 Swindal stayed with the plane at LUV, expecting the next leg of the trip to be to Austin. JFK was to have spent the night at the LBJ Ranch, then returned to Washington. When he got a phone call from Brigadier General Godfrey McHugh, he refuelled AF1 for the flight to Washington. He did not want JFK's coffin in the cargo hold, so he helped remove 4 seats and cut a bulkhead so the coffin would fit. He was not in the picture of LBJ's swearing in. The day of the funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, Swindal flew AF1 over the grave, at Jackie Kennedy's request. Swindal is himself buried in Arlington.
