➡️ OVERVIEW
Hi friends! Welcome back to another episode of what is new in luxury beauty! This is the series on my channel where we dive into all the interesting and spicy news and industry trends in the world of luxury beauty. In this episode, we will start by diving into some changes with Valentino Beauty. Alessandro Michele has become the new creative director of the fashion house and is bringing in more of his people from Gucci Beauty. Does this mean a potential rebrand for Valentino? Then we will get into the top 5 trends in luxury beauty according to the recent report from Cosmetics Industry News. We will discuss the comeback of the original non-vegan Glossier balm dot calm and what this means for other brands looking to go the clean and vegan route. Finally, I want to highlight Merit, a brand that has been in the spotlight lately for focusing on Gen X (finally!) and the success they have seen from their age inclusive campaigns.

How do you not have 100K subscribers??? Love your content! Editing to add that Fresh Beauty reformulated their lip balms to be vegan and they are now horrible! The Advanced Therapy version was my favorite, and the last one I purchased without realizing that the formula had changed was so bad I had to toss it. It all made sense once I learned that the formula had changed. I never would have spent $26 or $28 had I known! As for Merit, I am a big fan. Love the Great Skin, the original lipsticks, the flush balms, lip oils, solo shadows…everything I’ve tried, I enjoy. Looking to try the bronzing balm next, although I definitely don’t need any more cream bronzers 🤣🤣

Value and quality rules! I don't use Glossier but I'm pleased, so sick of the crappy reformulations for 'clean' or 'vegan' or 'sustainable'. I've hated Valentino Beauty until now, mostly because the the 'sustainable' packaging, so clear the entire draw out, get rid of the cheap-a$$ packaging and start again. LOVED AM at Gucci and I adore vintage everything,, but, NO, I don't want to see 'AM-Valentino-do-Gucci' RTW and accessories, I'd like to see sophisticated, elegant and colourful Valentino at Valentino. I hope they honour Valentino in the beauty dept. BTW, India has some fab beauty brands of its own!

Sometimes I feel as though the push for vegan and clean beauty is mostly happening in the vacuum of social media. At some point companies need to decide if they would rather alienate the shouting virtual throng, or the people actually purchasing their products and paying their bills. Nice to see a company having the cajones to choose the former.

I love merit beauty. I really love their matte lipsticks. I am almost 50 and I like their marketing campaigns and the quality and look of their makeup. I haven't used all of it but I love many of the things I've used. Including the highlighting balm.

Valentino Beauty needs Something! Their blushes are nice, but their packaging, for all its pretend poshness, veers into just plain silly. Palette/shoulder bag anyone? Their lipsticks are inconsistent in both quality and packaging, and the brand simply lacks direction. So they need to either improve it or drop it at this point. But how much do I love these new runway handbags? A whole lot! They look promising. Clean Beauty: don't get me started. Chanel and Dior reformulated using "clean beauty" as their excuse, and raised prices at the same time. They ruined so many products. No wonder Charlotte Tilbury and other brands are challenging them. I would like to see both of those old brands see the light and bring back old formulations. They have to be losing some money. Merit is going after Baby Boomers? Really? I thought they were going after much younger people. I've heard their lipsticks are good. The back story you are talking about of the founder is very interesting. I'll have to take a look. I know nothing about the brand. They never really got my attention. As for Westman Atelier seeking an exit strategy, that makes sense to me. Gucci Westman has been slow to launch new products, and I think it's hard in that industry for these makeup artists to stay ahead. I wonder if Lisa Eldridge is looking. As for brands targeting the over 50 crowd, which includes me, many simply don't interest me. Jones Road is a perfect example. I loved Bobbi Brown cosmetics before she sold the brand, but even then her creams and foundations were too greasy for me. Now she's selling pots of grease and telling me that's what I need for my combo skin! Ridiculous! (I wear Chantecaille Future Skin and Skin Tint or Chanel Water Fresh Tint). Everyone over 50 doesn't have dry skin. And I'm kind of pissed off at Bobbi Brown for perpetuating that myth. Even if my skin gets dry I'm using creams at night and Under my makeup. Sorry for the rant, but her brand and marketing really annoy me. That said, you wanted to know what we think and I'm old enough to have an opinion in this area. To me, brands like Chanel and Dior, which were those brands that historically pitched to the over 35 market, seem to have lost their way. I saw that Angela Van Rose just did a video that Givenchy reformulated their iconic face powder and ruined it. They were an aspirational brand. As for Guerlain, they screwed up their lipsticks in a cash grab and have lost some of us forever. They were another aspirational brand. So I am looking elsewhere. But mostly at Japanese products, that have superb quality and packaging. Long post, but you hit a lot of topics in this one, and hit a nerve with me. My friends who love makeup, and are old enough to have been buying it for a while, are frustrated and confused by all of the changes in the past couple of years. So we're all trying new brands like we did in our twenties. And we're unhappy that so many we used to rely on have let us down. Good video. Thanks.💚

I adore Valentino blushes. The concealer is really good as well. I am sick of all these reformulations especially Dior. I bought a Merit lipstick; but, it was just ok. It’s usually not good when a brand gets bought IMO because, the new owners just push old products with nothing new. Great video! Congrats on hitting 33k. It’s just the beginning 👏👏

I've enjoyed Byredo make-up for sometime and decided to venture into their fragrances. I'm rather impressed by these. I haven't been buying as much fragrance due to being a migraine sufferer and due to it taking so long to get through them. I prefer to have a handful of fragrance, rather than swamped by far too many. I recently purchased a complete set from Byredo of Rose of No Man's Land and a Set from Burberry of My Burberry in Eau de Parfum plus a Body Moisturising Mist. Only last week I received the new Diptyque Range of Ilio in the Hair Perfume, Body & Face Mist as well as the Citronnelle & Geranium Summer Body Spray with Essential Oils. As everything I order has to be online, I didn't want to buy the perfume at this point and especially as this is my first venture into Diptypue. As for Valentino, I only tried out this brand late last year when buying the second Flip Eye Palette, about 8 Lipsticks plus the pink Cheek and Lip Glitter. I've quite enjoyed this range and hope it isn't changed too dramatically. As far as Gucci is concered, I love their Lipsticks and own a Translucent Powder, yet that's as far as it goes. Nothing else really grabs my attention. I haven't tried the Blushes that so many rave about as I simply do not need any more at present. Dolce & Gabbana aren't even on my radar. When the Prada and Rabanne Ranges were released, I delved into both heavily. With Prada, I bought every Eye Palette and several Lipsticks and can't wait to buy more, especially the Balms. Rabanne impressed me so much that I own almost the entire range, expect for about four products. I love their eye-shadows so much that I purchased all four Quads and every Duo Shadow except for the creamy Duo. Their Lip Balms are super creamy with quite pigmented colours. I bought all three of the Metal Lipsticks and a number of their other regular versions. I love the fact that they've included so many products that can adjust the way the products look and perform that I feel like the mad scientist of make-up! The prices are very reasonable compared to Prada for example, with a difference between Balms of AUD$20.00! There aren't many brands at all that sell such products that can alter product to be used in so many ways and I love playing around with these. I couldn't speak more highly of them. I like the 'Italian feel' of Valentino make-up and hope that this doesn't go, only get better. Thanks for this update.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

Great takes on interesting topics! In terms of Merit, you described where they sit in the market perfectly! I think they have found a great balance of selling an experience/lifestyle that is still attainable…. Their products are pragmatic, versatile and easy to use, while still giving you that elevated, enhanced, effortless glow, while you dream about being in the south of France with everything you need in one resusable bag. Their collections are cohesive, highly curated yet they use tons of white space and artistic sketching, work in progress imagery to evoke creativity and imagination in their campaigns. Like their matte lipstick campaign, was all aesthetics-color and textures to evoke feelings and associations, and then all about the lip. I think they’ve tapped in and understand their market really well. For this reason, I do think they that are can be pretty polarizing. For those not into their aesthetics and vibes, they can be pretty turned off by the brand. I do enjoy their products and find how the brand continues to move in the beauty space fascinating.

Loved this video! I love the Oud scent by Tom Ford - like, it’s addicting. And I’m a Gen-Xer and excited to hear SOMEBODY remembered us 🥴 can’t tell you how many news articles I’ve read that will talk about Boomers then Millennials and just completely skip over us like we never existed lol. I can totally see how Merit Beauty is giving some love to us Gen X, because the packaging just screams the 90’s to me (we loved a good brown back then), which stands apart from Kosas / etc. like you said. I think that’s why I stopped buying Kosas - because I’m not interested in the packaging! I’ve got just about one to two of every product Merit put out including their brushes 😂

I have started buying more fragrances, but I prefer to get the sample sizes or decants and I love the niche fragrance houses. How many more make up items does one person need especially when they all expire anyways. Also I find only the middle eastern fragrance houses does oud well and I personally love the woody darkness they add to my fragrances. Also as an Indian based out of India, even though all these high ends make up brands say they are coming to India, they bring with them limited product releases, smaller foundation ranges and delayed new product releases. Moreover the pricing is way more higher than it is in the North America. So much so that people just ask their friends or relatives travelling abroad to shop there makeup items from outside the country

I really love what you’re doing with this series. With regard to Valentino Beauty, I find their packaging a bit overdone. For example, I really want to try their bronzer, but I don’t need a tiny purse. My makeup never needs to have a strap. Who carries their bronzer like that outside of a campaign photo shoot? And, I don’t need my bronzer to have a place to store lipstick. I’m considering getting the refill, but I fear it won’t have a decent lid (like the clear plastic one RMS uses with their refills). On a totally unrelated side note, I love your eyeshadow.

Love these videos. Your wit and analysis is always captivating. I agree with the trend you discussed. Oud is big due to attracting Middle Eastern customers. I think fragrance in particular is in the lime light. I care about good formulas of makeup, preferably fragrance free, clean etc doesn't mean anything and it makes me annoyed especially when they reformulate established and very popular products! Very few do that clean/vegan well. Hourglass is a good example

Oud is considered as one of the most expensive ingredients but I believe recently it was marketed very aggressive precisely as a kinda entrance to the world of luxury and oriental dream😂 but many real old fragrances are "I can't breathe " kinda style) and I am very surprised that it gained popularity here in the States where there are so many allergy sensitive people...hmm I don't know)

As a Gen X-er 🙂; I can say my opinion of Merit is very positive. I love their single cream eyeshadows and lipsticks. I'd say 95% of my college graduating class is working, some of us done raising kids and others had children later. Most married, and most who I graduated with in the Middle to Upper-Middle income categories. I love the ease of application before work. I'd also love to try more products from the brand! I do love RMS, Wayne Goss and BK Beauty, Angie Hot & Flashy! My opinion of Valentino is currently neutral, however, I'm definitely open minded and curious about the upcoming new transformations with the signing on of the Gucci Execs!! ❤ As far as the brands we know are marketed to the younger Gen Z, they're not catching my attention and honestly I'd rather buy my Cle de Peau, YSL, Guerlain, Givenchy, or Dior than reach for the hot pink, Flashy attention-grabbing names and brands that look like they'd sit on the shelves of one of my kiddos. 😅 Packaging and marketing are important to me plus tried-and-true science, quality, and packaging!! Yes - I'd much rather see QUALITY over QUANTITY and Yes! Those kiddos are asking for luxury brand colognes / perfumes!!! ❤

I love all the merit products! I'm 60 years old, my skin is great don't have any wrinkles or fine lines, this is from taking good care of my skin for over 40 years now. I actually worked in the business ( retired now) I worked for very high end lines, and I still have a lot of high end products and yet I reach for my merit. I also incorporate a lot of the merit with my high end products.

And also: I hope some brands are going away from "clean" beauty: I'm not going to buy a 60€ eyeshadow palette that expires in 6 month.. as a principal. I'm not someone who is strict on expiry dates but I've had my Dior concealer separate after less than 3 month of use and I'm not going to buy these types of products again.

Hi Sofia, I am more interested with what will happen with Gucci beauty because Valentino beauty is not available in Australia. I don’t like oud scent and generally speaking I never follow the trends with some minor exceptions. I hope you will review more fragrances. You asked which ones to review but it’s hard to say. Probably something like best floral, best long lasting etc and eventually showing us your fragrance collection. I am one of the people who likes to buy less but very good (fragrance, makeup, shoes etc). That means I am on trend now. 😁 The rest of the trends I think are ok. We don’t have Glossier in Australia but it’s a very good thing when a brand listens to the customers and maybe others will do the same. I hope this stupid “clean” trend will disappear. I don’t think Dior is doing well with the reformulated makeup products. Hermes will come out with a limited edition eyeshadow and 3 lipsticks.😍I hope you will review them. 😁 Thanks for sharing!💕

Great video Sofia, so informative and educational. I would love to try Merit Beauty but they still don't ship to the EU, which is so crazy to me!! I'm thinking of trying to get things shipped to a friend in the UK just so I can try a few items. I'm 30 and as I get older, I definitely favour a quicker, easier look and multi-purpose products etc so I think they're right up my street. I also find their marketing to be extremely savvy!

LOVE this series and your insights! Valentino will certainly be undergoing a metamorphosis...and I just bought my first Valentino blush in this awful packaging. Sigh! (I grabbed it on sale, I had to!) I really look forward to seeing how this will go....Also, Givenchy just reformulated their wonderful Prisme Libre powders! I live in Europe and here the originals disappeared a few weeks ago and this past week the new talc-free versions along with a new color - 00 - have shown up on my online retailer. Along with a very pale version that still has the OG formula called "Blanc Divin" .... i guess the blushes will be next....sigh

The Gucci takeover of Valentino...it might be that Valentino wasn't capitalizing enough on its relatively promising debut as a beauty brand or, it could be just the endless trend of brands buying brands, too often to see them wither under new corporate ownership. It's not as if Gucci has beauty all figured out, either. Gucci has its star products, but it's been an uneven brand. A few select shades of bronzer and blush have done extremely well. So have some lip products. Overall it's a mixed story. I've been intrigued by Valentino cosmetics but not bought any. Valentino has enthusiastic fans for the blushes and lip products. The shades and formulas have gotten good reviews. But as the rare person who disliked the packaging, at Valentino's price points I didn't want to splurge on components that I wouldn't enjoy handling. We'll see what's next.

A trend I have noticed is mid-range and some high end brands selling on QVC, The Gen X/Boomer Plus shopping site. The whole high end side of Ulta is there. EL brands, Lancome, Tarte, Givency, etc. They have deals, add a brush or something, and have interest free "Easy Pay". It's interesting to look at the marketing strategy side of this. The hosts and models look like us. Makeup is fun, like on KZfaq. They must sell an aweful lot, because brands keep joining this band wagon.

As a now baby boomer who grew up using what mom and grandmas used which was high end and luxury , I will avert from crappy formulas ,packaging of their own FOMO get something out to market quick so they aren't missing out. I want innovation, quality and longevity. I've stopped alot of makeup buying and switched to fragrance collection and obviously innovative skincare. . also don't forget the south American Latina purchasing power. Houston Texas is full of wealthy Latina money.

I am on the cusp of gen z and millennial and I like merit lip sticks but they don’t really have a shade that’s works for me in the complexion and the eyeshadows are impossible to open if you have any kind of dexterity issues so I got rid of them. The blush was just nothing special to me. Their packaging is pretty but I feel like their actual line could be expanded a bit color wise to be more inclusive and the packaging could be made so it is pretty and accessible.

Omg! What a nightmare! RIP VALENTINO BEAUTY. I don’t understand the Gucci makeup love. A side from their lipstick and bronzer the brand offers nothing to match the quality and prestige of the name. A couple weeks ago, even you reported that the head of LVMH is not happy with the direction of Gucci beauty and they were thinking of buying back their brand. Valentino has a great liner, foundation, blush bronzer. If they have a former Gucci beauty at the helm it will be a potential disaster

I'm still sad that Bite Beauty reformulated that lip balm, which was my go to overnight healing balm, and then bit the dust. Sigh. Stopped buying Dior after all the reformulations. Clean beauty is just a meaningless marketing trend. Personally I want my products to have preservatives so they last and I can be confident they're not going to spoil and give me an unwanted skin problem. Yes, grumpy old lady bitter about all my favorite discontinued products.

I am not interested in Glossier, this is what my friends’ daughters are wearing. Not that I am opposed to it, I might use one of their products if it’s something special. Same for Kosas. Candidly I am avoiding them as I don’t use my products that quickly, and I am worried they’d spoil. I do like some of Bobby Brown and Laura Mercier products like say eyeshadow sticks and skin tint but they’ve been around for so long I don’t find them exciting. I buy things here and there from established brands, e.g. YSL Rouge Volupte Shine on major sale just before they got discontinued and Givenchy iconic powder but for most part I find them way overpriced and not impactful enough. I spend most of my makeup dollars on makeup artist brands - ND, PMG, DM, CT, which are also established brands by now but are different in my book than fashion house brands. I also spend a bit on celebrities brand makeup like GIVE, KVD, Huda but not a whole lot. I also like what little I’ve tried from VBB.
