Autism DSM-5 update around 14:30, personally very disappointed in this update. It seems to be furthering itself from being able to diagnose women and men with autism who are often taught to mask and are suffering quietly trying to pursue a diagnosis.Making it more challenging to diagnosis autism in people with current level 1 with the new criteria will not mean there are less people with autism, there will just be more people with autism without the support and confirmation they are looking for from a diagnosis.

Yep, I don't know if I didn't understand but basically what I understood is that it's the same, they just added 3 words to criteria A

The fact that "being on the spectrum" is being over used, indicates a problem with general understanding and empathy. Instead, it sounds like people with autism will suffer to placate neurotypicals.

Exactly my thought! I’m being evaluated in May and I sort of meet all three, but only strongly meet 2. I’ve been waiting since October for my evaluation and I doubt I’ll be diagnosed now. Oh well I guess I’ll just keep being ADHD+quirky.

Definitely agree with another person that commented..this makes it harder for women with Autism to get properly diagnosed..it took me over 20 years to be diagnosed.. it's still being based on males.. it's very sad.. struggling for years due to conservative biasses (spelling?), is ridiculous..

Considering the recent research into the high rates of autistic traits found in people who have committed suicide, you would think it would be made easier to get diagnosed not harder. These changes will result in people not getting diagnosed as autistic but then ending up in the mental health systems with other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and trauma.

I've never understood why they keep saying that autism is being over diagnosed. That couldn't be further from the truth, the amount of autistic people out there without a diagnosis is huge. This just shows how stubborn and close minded some "specialists" can be. Why not just accept the truth that autism is way more common than they think? What would be so wrong or bad about that?

They don’t want to see autism and other neurodivergencies as anything more than disorders. By admitting a huge number of the population meet these criteria, I’m sure they also would have to reconsider whether these should even count as disorders. It would mean giving in to the neurodiversity paradigm.

Using the terminology of psychological diagnosis, a condition can be both under- and over-diagnosed. For example, autism could be over-diagnosed by population in, say, the state of California, but under-diagnosed in the state of Alabama. Just because the entire world population experiencing a diagnosable level of autism is diagnosed, doesn’t mean that it’s under-diagnosed.

I'm concerned on so many fronts. If 40% of the human population is autistic then 60% is allistic ... whether or not they are identified. To say that 'weird' people are being diagnosed is on us as professionals, it's saying we are not good at our job of recognising autism.. If an adult has lived most of their life 'struggling' to fit in with the allistic community (where they do not fit) and have adaptively morphed into social society to keep safe etc. then separating autism from mask can be hard to do. If we are not careful we will miss such individuals and this only adds to their woes, unemployment numbers, poor mental health, suicidality and relationship break-ups. Maybe our response to the DSM -5 TR discussion page should reflect these worries.

I disagree that ASD is overdiagnosed. I think there are just more autistic people among the general population than we realize. That's a good thing. Maybe this can help society understand when and where we need accommodations for neurodivergent people. But of course, the vast majority of neurotypical people still see autism as having a disease instead of a neurotype.
@jessatlife

Exactly! Admitting we’re a larger and more diverse minority than they have been willing to acknowledge means that they’d have to give in to the neurodiversity paradigm, and maybe even stop seeing autism and other neurodivergencies as merely pathological. It’s not in their interest to do that.

It's totally irrelevant that in common culture/language people might be referring to anyone awkward or weird as "on the spectrum", that should have no influence whatsoever on clinical decisions or diagnostic criteria. Common language use makes similar mistakes around OCD and there is appropriation and misunderstanding of many things. None of that necessitates changing diagnostic criteria. Consistently autism is under diagnosed, especially in women, and there are huge barriers to accessing accurate diagnosis. I do support it being accurate and robust, but the increasing cases is not over diagnosis, it is because of growing mutual understanding and support and I suspect there are still very many who remain undiagnosed. The implications for living without diagnosis are many and serious, it is far more important that we remove barriers than install gatekeeping.

Yeah, very disappointed about the direction they're going with the autism criteria. Agreed with previous comments. I'd be interested in what they did, who they met with for feedback about the changes to the criteria as not many Autistic people I know would approve of making it more restrictive. I did appreciate the interviewers' questions.

This is so disheartening. So many barriers already exist for women to be diagnosed, and this just makes it so so much harder for them, and if you've learned to mask in order to cope, this basically ignores all the struggle and exhaustion because those mandatory criteria aren't immediately visible anymore :( As usual, no one gives a shit about autistic people and I almost wish I could go back in time to before I knew that most of society thinks we're less than human. I'm just absolutely crushed, learning about these changes, like not even the people who claim to want to help us actually care.

I thought psychiatrists were supposed to be intelligent. You do realise that making it hard to get an autism diagnosis actually does nothing to reduce the numbers of those that are autistic? It's hard enough to get a diagnosis for the majority because of the cost, but now just because you think too many are getting diagnosed you're going to make it even harder? Why would you do that unless you have a prejudice against autistics? The whole community was hoping there would be positive changes like maybe eliminating the use of functioning labels. Different criteria for males and females as each present differently. You know, actually helpful things. But no, you went ahead and made it so that now people who are actually autistic, will not be able to get a diagnosis and instead be diagnosed with other things like bpd or bipolar (because it's not like there aren't enough already being misdiagnosed) and put on medications that wont do anything but make their situations worse and they wont get the supports that they need. So good one. Good work. You should have no say in this what so ever. Unless you are autistic you have no place to say anything about it. Autistics should only speak for us and I'm pretty sure there are enough medical professionals out there who are autistic. It's mind meltingly confusing for me that you literally think by making it harder will reduce the numbers. People will still be autistic. You've just succeeded in fucking up their lives a lot more. Congratulations evolutionsbremse.
