We continue to get questions -- and critiques -- about the 5-5-5 Method, a term Yvan coined to safely and quickly remove the appearance of most scratches.
Here's the original video featuring the 5-5-5 method: • Using the "5-5-5" meth...
5-5-5 is simple when you're trying to eliminate car scratches: Speed 5 on the machine, 5 pounds of pressure, and polish for 5 seconds. But there are important details here. You want to use the Gold Standard Wool Cutting Pad: bit.ly/GoldStandardWoolPad
And use this polish (Gold Standard Polish): bit.ly/GoldStandardPolish
In this podcast, Nick and Yvan discuss the ins and outs of the system -- yes, it's a proper system -- to get best results with the 5-5-5 method!

Thank you guys! This answered the question from the video I just watched that you jposted a few hours ago. Much appreciated. I work in sales, and am on the road all the time. Though this and the video I was just speaking of I was able to watch, I am putting on playlists and listening for most of the day while in the car. Of course I have watched many but even if I can't watch, because I have done this stuff sinse Jesus was a rookie, I can typically follow and understand what you're telling us. In the rare case I don't understand or follow, I save it and watch it again later. You guys are awesome. I'm looking forward to using the whole line once what I have is depleted. I did purchase several things that needed replacement and some things in fairness I just wanted to try. Will stay supportive as much as I can. Lol, I want the orbital and the not so orbital, but what I have in my arsinal isn't broke and gets it done without problem. I'm not a Harbor Freight guy. I always go top shelf. Though I haven't used all of the products, from anything I can research and find, I believe you are all that and more. Thank you again.

Great content! Yvan will one day be recognized as detailings most innovative and influential people. Not only does he know more than most, but he shares this knowledge willingly, even though it sets him up for criticism by short sited people. There’s very few people that can track down why they use a Rinseless wash, and that the root of that doesn’t start with Yvan.

yet to try this method because i haven’t bought your purple pad but have no doubt in the world it works. for my favorite way of polishing i developed the now 2 bucket method. 1 bucket with 3 gal of diy rinseless with all the pads i going to be using for the process. 2nd bucket with 3 gals of water sometimes with rinseless and a grit guard for cleaning the pads. grab a clean pad spin dry, use damp pad to polish a panel then when the pad is spent press the pad against the grit guard in the 2nd bucket to clean the pad, then put cleaned pad in the clean bucket grab a new pad and keep going. yes you have to dry your arm and hand each time but works great. and have the buckets on wheels for more convenience. hope that helps anyone who hasn’t got a pad washer or doesn’t want to buy one. 🐿️💨

A couple of week ago my neighbor and i took the train to Québec from New-Brunswick to take delivery of his black 2020 Acura MDX. It only had 30k kms on it. Even tho we asked not to polish or do anything to it, they send it to a detailing shop prior to our arrival. It look nice and shiny but once arrive at home to prepared it for a ceramic coating I've noticed that it had a bad rubbing scratch on one corner of the front bumper something that they try to hide with some filler wax. As I didn't know what kind of correction they tried, I just went over with the 5,5,5 method. It took over 75 % of the scratch. Once the ceramic coating applied, it's almost invisible for the general public and my friend is happy.

The 5-5-5 method is meant for a dual action machine, preferably a 21mm DA actually. The method really is a system designed around our wool pad and Gold Standard Polish

gf just got me a LC pad washer. what dilution of rinseless shoukd I use for it? just got my yellow waffle, wool pad. time to DIVE IN I SUPPOSE! also does the solution last for a certain period of time in pad washer, or do I have to mix up a “new” batch each time? I’ve just got my car (2015 black nissan altima) & her 2020 honda accord. should I start with the waffle pad for less cut, or the wool for more. guess I can use speed 3, 3 passes procedure with wool & gloss it up with the waffle. got to get me some ceramic coating next. one other thing can you suggest some good detail briushes for wheels, emblems. ❤️ the vids & keep up the GREAT WORK!

That's too aggressive, that's a 2 step , start with the waffle pad and see how u like the results and if certain areas have deeper scratches or to get more out use the wool But make sure to clean , clay bar with iron decon and use panel prep before applying ceramic
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 10 ай бұрын
you can use Snappy Clean pad cleaning powder or Rinseless Wash 256:1. It will last quite a long time in there, but use common sense if it's been a month maybe switch out the solution:) It's best to keep the pad washer clean after every use if you can, it doesn't take much time to take the pieces apart and rinse everything out. Try yellow waffle and see if you're satisfied with the shine and gloss. Obviously this won't remove all defects and scratches and that's okay:) that's not the goal. you're going for some defect removal but mostly shiny scratches. However, if it's not satisfactory you can try the wool. It's likely you'll get more defect removal, and you might want to stop right there but it might have hazed up the paint a bit and you find that a second step with yellow waffle adds more gloss. Have fun!

There’s an old training vid where Yvan is teaching 5-5-5 and I thought he was using the rotary. Nick was running the camera I think. Until this podcast, I thought we were to use the rotary which I understood to be Yvans fave tool. Question is……how does this work with the rotary? Spent a ton on a flex rotary because Yvan is such a big fan of the rotary, but seems he may have acquiesced to the dark magic of the DA!! Do I need a 21mm DA now for the 5-5-5?
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 10 ай бұрын
5-5-5 method isn't meant for rotary. Actually, Yvan always teaches cutting with a 21mm DA and finishing on speed 1 with the rotary. You can use a 15mm DA as well, but as Yvan explains in this video....he designed 5-5-5 as a system that works best with the products he outlines in the video. That includes keeping the wool pad slightly damp, but lots of folks try and use this method with 15mm DAs as well. Don't fret about the rotary! It's a great machine (that FLEX) and it's great for finishing for maximum gloss after you compound with wool on a DA
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 10 ай бұрын
Craig, in the video with Nick it was a 21mm machine. I am a fan of the rotary for finishing, but I always use a DA to cut, it’s more efficient. That said this technique is reserved for the DA. For the rotary, use the wool pad on speed 1, no pressure.

If I only want to get one machine, will the rotary provide decent cutting with the wool pad when needed and then finishing with the yellow or jeweling pad (not referring to the 5-5-5 level of scratches, just love marks)? I like the smoothness, quietness, and finishing ability of the rotary but want to ensure it can provide decent cut when needed without taking forever. Or is the 15mm DA the best all around machine? Thanks!

it's a great question, did you happen to watch this video? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJ1kaNiZy5_YqYE.html. Not trying to get out of the question, but choosing just one polisher is a complicated subject...hence the podcast episode about this. This is Nick btw. I would probably get the 15mm, but I'll let Yvan chime in if he would like to disagree. It's definitely a close one but a DA can be very easy and versatile and they are popular for a reason....I'm always going to chose both, so I can chose depending on the situation:)
@renuing
@renuing 10 ай бұрын
@@diydetailofficial Thanks Nick, I do remember watching that video and went back and watched it again right now :) The 15 DA does seem to be a great all arounder but then Yvan mentioned the first polisher he gave to all his new employees was a rotary. I could certainly get the DA and rotary but Yvan was also mentioning the pad choice might be more important. That's why I was hoping a rotary would work good enough with the wool pad when cutting is needed even if it would take a couple more passes. The rotary just seems so much nicer to use. I hope Yvan shares a few thoughts too, I know it's a complicated and tough question. Thanks as always, love your content and the education portion you are both leaning into so much!

you got it!@@renuing without having used a rotary (I'm guessing that's where you're at) it's just hard to say for me, I would prefer you know the feel of both machines and could get some time with them before pulling the trigger. It also depends on if this is for personal or professional use. Lots of people cut with a rotary to this day, so it's obviously possible to get those results, but we don't teach that method
@renuing
@renuing 10 ай бұрын
@@diydetailofficial That definitely makes sense and your assumptions are correct. I haven't used either type of polisher yet and it would be for personal use only. I've done quite a bit of woodworking though so definitely understand the dual action feel via hundreds of hours using random orbital sanders. Funny enough I don't currently have one at home since that's all been professional use :) They can be kind of jumpy at times and, well, random.
