One thing new restaurant owners and ghost kitchen owners ask me is about which food delivery app is the best one to partner up with. Is it uber eats or doordash or grubhub or etc.? Well the answer isn't THAT simple.
That's because each delivery app has their pros and cons. One may have a higher commission fee but has larger market share. One may have less availability but better terms of service that protects you as a small business.
In this video I compare the top 4 third party food delivery apps with 4 factors: commission, availability, market share, and terms of service. Because everyone is in a different situation and has different thoughts (ie. you may care about terms of service more than commission fee), you can decide which one suits your food business the best after the video.

Over here in Victoria, Skip The Dishes is most prominent, do you have stats for them? I'm guessing that Availability will vary significantly based on geographic region. Very informative video BTW! Great to see another BCer doing well. Thanks.

Hello fellow BCer! That is interesting to hear that Skip is the most popular there. I'll need to do some digging to see what stats are out there for Skip. I do know that they have around 29,000 restaurant partners in Canada though.

We have a delivery service that charges %15 flat. Even the big guys charge this fee to merchants while still charging the customer for the delivery. They are BANKING it

The marketshare is literally different it every city. I've been to places where DD is trash and has no business and places where it dominates the market. You kinda just have to check your local market.

Awesome stuff. Picking an app isn't easy. I feel a big determining factor is understanding the demographic on each app. Do you know if the information is public? Such as who uses Skip, DoorDash, UberEats? About 90% of my orders are coming from UberEats due to the ease of implementing promotional offers. .What can I do this with this insight?

Demographics may not be the biggest factor at the moment since from what I see...there isn't too much loyalty to specific apps from consumers. A ton of people just sign up for an account for each and use the one that has a promo that day. So I think you want to lean more towards how the brand gives you support (like how Ubereats has with their promos).

In Malaysia, Airasia an airline company just launch their own food delivery app with just 10%. Interrupting the standard 30% comm charges.

You talked about the “amazon effect” with the delivery apps but what are examples or in what way could the delivery apps do that to the restaurant owners? I’m a little confused

Since these apps own the marketplace, they see ALL the data (like Amazon). It isn't hard to imagine them spinning up their own restaurants or cloud kitchens (they already own dedicated cloud kitchens.) So it becomes a potential problem when the owner of the marketplace is also a seller AND has a track record of shady tactics (ie. doordash creating restaurant sites that link to their platform without permission from restaurant owner). They COULD bury restaurants in their platform and boost their own or undercut competitors (like Amazon basics items).

Food Dudes Delivery charges 30% commission and if the restaurant adds another food delivery service like DD or UE etc then the commission goes up to 45%

45% Commission on each order should be outlawed for food delivery apps to charge a restaurant. Even 30% is pretty hefty for restaurants to pay.

You could...but you'll want to understand the pros & cons of each and test which ones gets you the best deal, support, and # of orders.

I don't know, but it causes creating a Delivery Application and people earn their 100%, corduroy that it causes. No sé, pero provoca crear una Aplicación de Delivery y las personas ganen sus 100%, de pana que provoca.

The other part that I want to say, each Delivery that is made should be charged an approximate amount of 20 USD regardless of said distance, it would be fair for the Driver since their Cars need Gasoline expenses, crash insurance, Maintenance, repair and even purchases of their spare parts and including the Rubbers and make it their main livelihood for many unemployed and foreigners who resort to that food delivery job. La otra parte que quiero decir, cada Delivery que se haga se debería cobrar un monto aproximado de 20 USD sin importar dicha distancia, sería justo para el Conductor ya que sus Carros necesitan gastos de Gasolina, Seguro de choque, Mantenimiento, reparación y hasta compras de sus respuestos e incluyendo los Cauchos y convertirlo eso en sus sustento principal para muchos desempleados y extranjeros quienes recurren a ese trabajo de entrega de comida.

I don't own a restaurant, but for some reason KZfaq recommended this video to me. I'm appalled at how much these apps charge restaurants, then they add delivery fees and prompt me to tip a driver in advance. I'll admit I used their services during the pandemic but not anymore!

They are the worst to drive for. As a driver it is a shot in the dark taking offers from Post Mates. No idea of mileage, or what the pay out estimate is before accepting the offer. Also their orders take the longest to fulfill because half the time the driver has to go to restaurant, then order, pay with the card, and wait around for the order to be ready. So this is in part because they don't have a strong fleet of drivers delivering for them.

Could you pls explain, so if i want to send my food through any of them, does that food has to be ordered through their app? Or can i somehow get an order from my website for example, and deligate them to deliver?
