I was thinking about 35s for my 2017 Tacoma but after watching your video, I will most definitely run with 34s instead. Your video was absolutely helpful!!

You are right, once you start with modifications you NEVER stop. I found that out with my 2000 4Runner, it became an experimental vehicle after the warranty was over. Suspensión lift, tires, rims, bull bar, winch, raised air intake, dual lockers and the list goes on. sold the truck and bought a 2016 Tacoma TRD off road manual transmission. I have been running 32 inch tires with 2” OME lift for almost 4 years now. I’m just happy with that. I have my fun on the trails without breaking the bank...cheers!!!

Thanks for the vid and insight on different wheel sizes. Installed an ikon stage 4, with the ikon UCA and AAL springs. Settling on 265/75/16 Falken WPAT3 Keeping stock wheels for now. Saving that $$$$ for re-gear 4.88s. Tacoma squelching for smoother power with the added load.

Rob, I want to touch on a couple of things to consider with the size choices you are discussing. If you are just going for looks and crawling the mall - mission accomplished; you made it. However, if you are off roading the truck and thinking you are increasing the performance envelope of the vehicle, a lot of other things come into play. There is a vast increase in unsprung weight with some of the tires you looked at, especially the large, Load Range E tires. They weigh about twice what the factory tires do (One was like 99 pounds). That increase in mass creates a number of mechanical challenges for your truck. First, the increase in size diminishes your gear ratio. Without a re-gear, the truck would be sluggish and may not be able to use the last gear in the trans. It would also make the truck weaker off the line and require more throttle to get going and it would suck on trails especially with the lack of low end in the Tacoma. In addition, it would place increased wear on the entire (U joints, axles, bearings, CVs, drive shafts, gears, diff) driveline. However, not only have the taller tires decreased the final drive ratio, the large increase in mass means the truck will have to work even harder to get those heavy tires moving. This will add to the stress you are already putting on the driveline via mechanical leverage. Increased wear and decreased mileage will be the outcome. You have to ask yourself if what you are getting out of the larger tires is worth what you’ll put in in terms of the loss of power/cost of regearing and the increased wear/breakage over the whole drivetrain. I see guys go “whiskey throttle” when they start to dig in or get hung up. Do this with really large tires, and then suddenly grab or hop, and an axel or CV will likely grenade. The regearing will not “solve” the problem, but it will mitigate some of the effects. You still have tires that have a greater roll resistance and will have to push aside more air as they travel (and I’m assuming the ride and noise aren’t an issue for you). The other issues you will face are a decrease in braking ability and increased wear of brake and suspension components. That will occur because of the increased energy the brakes will have to counteract due to leverage applied to the rotors because of the increased diameter and the increased kinetic energy of the heavy tire. The suspension will also feel the effects because everything from the ball joints, shocks, and coilovers, to the A arm and leaf bushings will have to counteract the increase in kinetic energy generated from the increased mass of the tires. Much of this will be in the form of the increased energy put to the components through deflection when hitting bumps. The greater amount of unsprung weight will also affect your spring rate requirements as the suspension will see greater energy input front and rear You also mentioned using a greater negative offset rim, which is common with larger tires. Widening the track, also increases the problems. It loads the wheel bearings in a more uneven manner which increases the wear on them and increases the point of leverage (which increases the force applied) against the springs and bushings. Aside from all of this, you are also putting more stress on the tie rods/ends and your steering box. I’m not criticizing you or your choices, or trying to be an old man about it. I’m only saying, make informed choices. You can’t touch one part of a mechanical system without affecting the other components. I’ve had and built lots of trucks over my lifetime and in the past I was driven by going farther than the other guy. Now, I view things as a balance by considering my use and how changes will affect the overall system. I have a 19 TRD OR (also in Quicksand) and I’m running a 32 (Load Range C) and little lift. That works for my purposes and is not adding too much stress to the systems mentioned above. My last truck was a full size, with 35s. Even on a full size, that increase in tire size creates issues (brakes, suspension lift, regear, loss of mileage, etc.) and a full size will tolerate that increase better than a mid-size. Everything in the world of machines is a give and take; there really is no free lunch here.

Thanks for commenting. Modifying a vehicle always comes with pros and cons. Even a mild lift can cause needle bearing issues even though stock Tacomas are also afflicted. That's why I had that little PSA in there too. Staying stock is the most affordable choice as well as maximizes longevity of all the parts you mentioned.

Thanks for the insight. I have 265 75 r16. Goodyear duratac. Still debating wether to go 16 or 17 inch rim and what tire size. I do think they will be toyo open country rt. You are right about gateway drug. So far not too deep into the Rabbit hole, only about $5k. with lift and tires. went with bilstien 5160 2 inch lift.

For me the perfect size on my FJ Cruiser is 33 or 285/70/17. Because it’s what I can afford. 🙂

I'm running 35's on a 6" procomp lift. Although they look good, they are not practical. When hitting bumps in a turn while offroading rubs big time. Also bad in reverse while turning. Put on a Shrockworks front bumper that helped a bit but still had to do a lot of trimming like you so I feel your pain. I would not do 35's again. BTW, I'm really close to you living in South OC :). I keep looking for your truck on the road.

33s are the best IMO . If you are willing to re-gear to 4.88 (automatic trans). I went 32 and some change and am gonna learn to love it. 5.29s and 35s,37s are for rock crawlers😂😂. I'm a trail guy

Rick Mccraw I agree, I have a tundra and stock it has 10 something inches of ground clearance which is better than the tacoma. I’m just gonna put on 33’s and be happy with it. Most people put 35’s on for looks, most people go for the cool look instead of performance.

Your Tundra has the torque at least for 35s. Tacos will struggle. I haven't heard anyone happy rocking 35s on stock gears.

Rob Daman that is true, but many tundra guys on forums regear because you can feel a difference even with a big V8 in the tundra, the guys who have 35’s feel a loss in power. It’s like you said upgrade one thing now you have to upgrade another

So.... Dumb question, with the automatic 2wheel drive, to remedy the throttle response and run 285/70/16 KO2’s , is re-gearing a viable option? After the leveling/lift kit? And if so 4.88 or 5.29?? Just highway driving for the most part. Appreciate the vids Rob!! ✊🏼

yes it's a OffRoad edition 6 speed manual. 13s according to the truck computer. Tires are bigger so it's not 100% accurate.

Personally I think it is too much tire for the drivetrain. Looks great though. I like narrow tires and there are a few out there that would work, and reduce your rubbing, like BFG's KO2 in 34x10.5R-17. It gives the ground clearance without all the weight and there is no extra offset needed.

Thank you rob....I'd love to have mine on 40's....BABY IS CUTE!!!!!..... TACO'S THAT ARE STOCK AND WANT TO RUN A SPACER LIFT WITH A BLOCK. THE REAR SHOCKS WILL WORK WITH A 2" BLOCK. THEY WILL WORK WITH THE FACTOR BILSTEIN 4100'S...IM DOING IT NOW...NOT FOR LONG THOUGH...5100' TOYTEC LEAF AND FRONT ADJUSTABLE STRUT. STAY AWAY FROM ROUGH COUNTRY. MY STRUTS BLEW OUT AND REAR N3'S ARE JUNK!!! THEY WONT WARRANTY NOTHING!!!! SHOCKS HAVE 3,000 MILES ON THEM.. ..STARTED RUSTING WITH POWDER COAT IN 3-4 WEEKS.....RC IS JUNK!!! @@RobDaman I know now......I was trying to get away from a new suspension.....lol....I was asking u all about the 5100's for the strut and the stock springs on the highest setting...u said u have alot of friends running them with no problems. We was talking about it before sema...I have all 5100's and a AAL ...how much longer are they on ur truck 2"-4" longer?..or the same ones I have with the adjustable 5100's? I want to say thanks again for all of your help before sema....and over the summer. Your an awesome guy....not to many people would take the time out and do that with all that u have going on and 3 kids at the time...thank you!!!

It's just my personal opinion, but I think any tire over 33" looks ridiculous on a Tacoma. I just think it's too much tire for the size of truck and looks silly. Again, just my opinion. On top of that, the larger tires cause problems with power delivery due to their weight and they accelerate wear on driveline components, unless you make other expensive mechanical upgrades, such as gears, etc. You also will have a lot of rubbing, unless you do the cab mount chop and other expensive suspension mods. For me, even if I did like the look of larger tires, I don't think it's worth it to do all that. I'll probably go with the 4Runner TRD wheels and 285/70/17 (32.7 inch) tires and a 2 inch lift when I get around to upgrading my 2020 DCLB OR. I've seen this setup on a few Tacomas and it looks perfect for my tastes, while not giving up anything in offroad performance.

Lol second time writing you I just got my toyo at3 305/70/17 I should be ok right? Just a basic cmc and little bit of trimming should be good, plus my boy own cvc tuning so my gas and gear hunting won’t be a problem…

Hey Rob! I wanted to ask your opinion. I’m upgrading my tire size to 34” tires in a few months. Do you think I should get a dramatic CMC or just go with the Cab Mount relocation. I’m planning to go with a reputable shop in so cal. Hope you and your family are staying safe in this pandemic

gonna have to be really cut cmc to still clear the tire. relocation makes it obvious to the dealership if you are concerned about warranty.

@Rob Daman I have 2019 TRD OR DCSB and I saw on the forums that a lot of people state a 265/75r16 (32 inch) tire doesn't rub on my vehicle...what was different for yours that caused the rub? I'm wary to go up in tire size and not ready for a lift (yet?).

Rob Daman yeah, I like how the RT’s come also in a C load which makes them lighter. I just can’t tell if they look aggressive enough for me. The Ridge Grapplers appears to look more aggressive in photos.

What were your thoughts on 285/75/17? They're slightly taller than the 305/70/17 but not as wide. I'm currently running 285/70/17 which puts me at about a 32.7" tall tire. I'm considering 285/75/17 as my next tire size up.

i have a manual so it's not bad. automatic would be borderline. I think it would depend on your driving style but if you go uphill a lot, i'd say it may be a problem.

Get SPC upper control arms. Adjust your lower cam bolts to move the wheel as far forward as it will allow, front cam bolt all the way in, rear all the way out. Set your spc UCA to position E -1 degree caster. Tell alignment shop don’t touch caster just set camber via the spc upper and tow in. You’ll have a lot of clearance this way and still about 1-2 degrees of caster which is great.

Rob Daman jba’s are awesome uca’s. Definitely look into the spc for larger tires. With JBA and other uca’s u just push the bottom of the wheel forward by increasing caster. With spc u can push the bottom AND top of the wheel forward. Increasing caster at the bottom but decreasing caster at the top. Moving the whole wheel forward in the well.

I have the OME BP-51 full suspension kit with heavy duty leafs in the back. I already removed most of my fender well up front due to the C4 fab front bumper. I do have the SPCs I am on stock tires now and no problems doing everything I want to do in Colorado even in the winter. But tires are about shot. I was going to go to 33s but now after seeing this I’m thinking 34s. I am guessing I would need a chop? What size tire is recommended. Thanks!!

Do these settings for the SPC UCA’s prevent rubbing with 33 or 35” tires? I’m considering 35s on my Tacoma but not sure if I’ll be creating more problems. Any suggestions?

You have to understand that when you decide to lift a vehicle you are opening Pandora’s box. Do you want to just crack the lid just a little bit to get just a taste, or blow the lid wide open for the total effect. You have to realize (your going to) that when you do a lift your changing your vehicles geometry, and when you change one you change them all. And if you want to keep the realizability of your vehicle you should change what needs to be addressed because of said lift height. So if you going to go off road and where will determine what height of lift a recovery to go with it. Or just throw your wallet at your vehicle and when your done, go over to your nearest shopping mall and crawl over some unattended shopping carts to show of your off road capabilities. If you physically do all the research and actual work into lifted suspensions, power train, drive train, safety and recovery gear, and learning how your vehicle handles off road and reading your line of travel. You will have a full understanding of what it takes to build/customize an off road rig, and not just build some pavement princess that likes to go puddle hopping now in again. We are talking about Toyo’s here, very popular tire for mall crawlers, and the larger the rim the more side wall you loose. Usually the more side wall is better for off road use.

They are well ventilated cause there are 4 slits two on top and bottom that distribute air

What kind of lift did you put on? I have the same truck with T3 winch bumper + Dobinsons struts + coils + JBA UCA netting about 2” lift and I have 4.88 regear. I’m wanting to go 33’s you’re saying it will rub even with 33’s?

If I have a 3 inch lift how big of a tire can I fit on 17 inch wheels with no trimming or cutting or rubbing

32 inch tire is 99% sure no issues. anything bigger may rub untouched. People will say proper alignment and wheel offset will help but unless it's all street driving it's highly likely to rub on 33s.

Rob, All you need to do is get adjustable upper control arms and it will help with yourCaster issue. My Taco is manual too and fine that only when heavily weighted down off rod do I feel like I need more gears. If you considered anything I would go with a Tacobox since you have a manual 4x4 like I have as it gives you ridiculously better off-road capability than a re gear. Same concept but this “modifies” your transfer case instead. Softer ride would be general ATX. Softer side wall but you should look into a LT tire if basically no offroading or heavy loads.

@@RobDaman My pleasure, some KZfaq creators have awesome children. ; -) I'm curious have you ever calculated the cost of clearance per 1/2"? ‘N I’m just tossing numbers, without pulling specs. Say a 3” lift costs $1200 works out to $200 per 1/2". A set of five 35” tires at $200 per tire costs 1k, if you’re replacing 33” tires. Works out - 35-33 = 2 x .5 = 1" about $500 per 1/2” increased clearance. Just wondering… I’ll be looking for your next video. Be well.
