I've been going retro with some original Playstation games lately and wondered what is the best way to play them? You can use an actual PS1, PS2, or a PS3. The PS2 and PS3 also add the option of texture smoothing. WOW! So many choices!! But which one is the best option? Find out here!!

You mentioned the faster load time with the ps2 but didn't mention how much faster the loading time would be. For me that's a game changer for ps1 games

I don't think you can tell a big difference in racing games especially not in a game as well optimized as Ridge Racer. Try an early 3d platformer.

The one very solid benefit though when playing on a PS3 over a PS2 that many overlook is the fact that you do not require an original PS1 Memory Card. You also pretty much forgo save file memory limitations on that system as well. And Bonus points if you can get the one model of PS3 that is backwards compatible to PS2. I know its not a big deal but its a pretty serious one considering PS1 mem cards are a pain to get and they dont hold alot of saves so for authenticity id argue PS1 with HD cables through some means or a PS2 with smoothing. For convenience PS3 since its a hard bargain to argue against when save file space is no longer a limitation and bigger collectors practically need a portfolio of PS1 Mem Cards which they can do without thanks to the PS3. Though hats off to you if you do have that as that is some serious dedication to the console.

I also forgot to mention this effect is a double edged sword though that you may also consider to put that detriment from the red into the yellow because even though the save limitations are removed from the PS3 because the PS2 does use the PS1s very limiting memory cards. This also does mean you can carry your saves over to the PS2 from the PS1 and vice versa. So there is an argument to be made there, I still think the PS3 is the most convenient. But there is an argument to be made if you already have pre-established saves and do not want to lose them all the while getting the most from your games.

Can also use dualshock 3 or 4 with PS3 for PS1 and PS2 games.

@@hellogoodbye4906 Another good point but I also want to supplement that with the fact I forgot in both comments to add. And I found this out after testing that you can emulate the multtap the original console's use. . You do this by holding the PS button in game and selecting "Assign Slots" And you will notice your controller is on 1 or 1-A and you can scroll to 2 also known as 2-A. If you keep scrolling you'll get 1-B, 2-B, 1-C, 2-C, and then 1-D, and 2-D. . What they represent is the 2 multitaps your emulating. With the number representing the slot that emulated multitap is attached to and the Number being the controller slot on said multitap. with 1 and 2 acting as 1-A and 2-A or the first slot in that emulated multitap when a multitap is active. . A multitap is used to let you plug in multiple memory cards and controllers up to 8 Controllers and Emulated Memory Cards can be active simultaneously. The reason its here is there are games that make use of this feature and that is why the PS3 can Emulate them. So that is another point in convenience as you do not have to hunt down the physical Multitaps or controllers for games that use it.

@@videogamerNattie98 true although PS3 only supports 7 controllers via Bluetooth. The 8th would need to be plugged in. Also the playstation button doesn't work on dualshock 4 on PS3 so you can't access that screen on dualshock 4. Still prefer the original console though, it isn't just the games, it's the controller, the consoles clicks and disc sounds etc that help hit that nostalgic need.

@@videogamerNattie98 oh! Just so you know, there's actually an official memory card accessory for the ps3 which lets you plug in your ps1 and ps2 memory cards! I backed up all of my 8 memory cards from both systems onto my ps3 and now I play my old saves on it =) it's great to have backups in case you lose the cards also

@What's Poppin? To be honest I have the fat PS3 that played the PS2 games and they are sick when played in HDMI. However I always played them at 1080i. They look way better in 720p. The colors be different and better but playing them in components make it look more like PS2 colors but not quite. PS3 is the easiest most convenient way but when you start playing old Neo Geo stuff it looks horrible upscaled and looks better on Ps2. The Capcom CPS2 games whoever look awesome upscaled and smoothed out, it makes that Street Fighter Alpha look like CPs3 stuff.

@What's Poppin? Hunt down the fat PS3 with PS2 hardware would be the next best thing. You go to the display settings and change the resolution to 720p and uncheck 1080i (although some PS2 games look sick on that mode), uncheck 1080p too. Other than that check out that Metal Jesus video s talking about.

So far my favorite way to play PS1 games is on a PS2 w/ component cables, on a CRT. I am looking forward to trying the upcoming HDRetrovision component cables for PS1 though. No matter what, ya gotta get away from the composite! Lol

@What's Poppin? I dont know what that is. I play my PS2 and PS1 on this HD CRT tv from Samsung. Its phenomenal. Some PS2 games look good without upscaling on that but some will look great but pixelated. That's when you remedy that with PS3 upscaling.

@What's Poppin? I'm not sure about that, I know that for me when using a PS1 console I used the Genesis HDRetrovision cable with a PS1 adapter they make for it.

The PS2 was the only official console so far that was able to filter/smooth the textures of PS1 games, other than emulators that use an hardware accelerated GPU plugin. PS3, PSP and Vita only smoothed the image but not the textures itself, so it does not look much different.

Yeah that's strange how they never replicated that feature in the other Playstations. I heard that the creators of Bleemcast helped make PS2 do stuff like that.

I've come to prefer playing PS1 games on a PS2 via component cables (With smooth on). It displays a larger picture on my 4K TV with component, rather than playing on a PS3 via HDMI, and to my eyes the games look clearer too? My 5.1 audio setup also seems to work fine with PS1 games when using the PS2 which is nice!

Same here, I popped in syphon filter 2 into a ps2 I recently bought. I tried it on a Sony Bravia from about 2005 ish and I felt that it was really outdated and pixelated. However, after trying it out with the same (yellow,red,white) AV cable on a 65 inch 4K it looked really nice. Like, it felt as if it was outputting 720p 60 fps, but it could’ve been my imagination. Either way though the latter is what I prefer

I pair my Mcable with my PS3 and it really does make the picture quality look great. (For those of you that don't know about this cable, it's an HDMI cable with a built in graphics processor designed to enhance picture quality, upscale, and offers anti-aliasing to smooth jagged edges.)

something else I wanted to add after watching your video about playing ps1 games on a ps2, not only does it have the best image like you said in this video especially on a CRT but the slim model ps2 also has a much better disc drive than the ps1 and even the fat model ps2. the bonus though playing ps1 on ps3 is that the ps3 has the best disc drive of them all but has the lowest quality image yet the original ps1 has the worst disc drive being extremely sensitive to scratched or ruined discs while on a CRT is the intended way to play ps1 games. just some things i found out through my own experimentation, the ps1 is my favorite game console of all time so i have been trying out different ways of playing my ps1 games and decided to switch on the smooth texture mapping on my slim ps2 to play ps1 games on a CRT just like you suggested at the end of the video.

@@ShamanNoodles before component, svideo was actually the best way to play ps1 and ps2 games because component is identical to hdmi its a much newer video format than svideo

Great comparison! Really helps a lot, especially regarding in comparison to the rest. I know we're 5 years later here, but it'd be interesting to return to this comparison with a focus on the model of PS1 (as well as PS2 in component output). Supposedly, the PS1's graphical quality varies between models. The SCPH-1001 is thought to be the worst (and has the worst performance, period); the SCPH-7501 is said to have the best graphics, performance, and reliability. Models after the SCPH-7501 downscaled internal components, and are said to perform to perform worse as a result.

I don't know if most people know this or not, but there's a difference when you put in a disc in the Playstation 3 or play the downloaded copy. There's a difference. When you're playing it directly on the disc I find it looks a lot better. The software version looks muddy, Try it

I was sort of hoping for hardware inclusive details. But I think the ps2 is the way I'll end up playing these games. I knew about the other picture settings but not smoothing and disc speed! I'll find a good up scaling Avi to HDMI and hopefully it'll be good enough

Just a tip from experience: if the upscaler you find costs less than $100, it's likely trash that WILL fail you in one way or another. And if it's one of those $10-20 upscalers from amazon, it's GUARATEED to be utter trash that won't improve your picture at all. And if you don't upgrade cable to something better than composite in addition to using an upscaler, you'll just be upscaling a shitty image... kind of like taking a blurry image and just making the blurriness more obvious and glaring, LOL. Getting the best image quality is a bitch, and anyone who goes on this journey will either pay the price for all the stuff needed for a decent set-up, or first learn the hard way that there are NO shortcuts. I've gone through LOTS of frustration early on trying to play old consoles on modern TVs. Good luck. It isn't easy to figure it all out.

For me its simple: Besides framerate and resolution Og Version in their OG hardware is the best option. Emulation just like remaster ports just introduce bugs or miss something from the original.

Best option is PS2 with component cables. PS2 has PS1 memory card compatibility, and unless you've only exclusively used your PS3 for PS1 games and saved data for them on your PS3 of all places (odd choice), you're better off using a PS2. I honestly don't get the appeal of sacrificing PS3 storage space for that when I could just use PS1 memory cards. You don't have to record PS2 through composite - you were wrong about that one. Although a pretty small portion of PS2 games utilize progressive scan (480p) which is the biggest thing unlocked by component cables. They will still make PS1 games and non-progressive scan PS2 games look better than they would with composite, however.

I have the Fat PS3 that uses the PS2 hardware for backwards compatibility and it plays PSOne games very well but they still look better on PS2. It will make colors to saturated. It's better suited for PS2 games although I would rather be able to simply upscale from the actual PS2 because the colors look much better to me.

I was trying the smooth thingy with my ps2 and my ps3 (I have the middle slim one) and in all honesty I will stick with my PS3 for PS1 games, the blur is almost the same on both, but the color scheme for ps3 is so crisp due to the HDMI, I was comparing with Mortal Kombat 4, it's a shame I cant play ps2 games on my ps3 though.

The ps2 also had component capability so that is a bit false there, it doesn’t only do composite. And for the ps1 you also could have done s-video which would all have yielded better results than composite.

For PS1 you can actually even use RGB which is the best output method for the console. The guy in the video doesn't really know what he's talking about, claiming you have to use composite for PS1 and PS2.

Why are you using composite to record the PS1 and PS2? The PS1 maxes out at RGB SCART, and the PS2 supports the same YPBPR component cables as the PS3. In addition, HD Retrovision sells cables that will transcode the PS1's RGB signal into YPBPR.

all i have is the original playstation with composite cables and a crt tv. there is one problem, however. i don't have enough outlets in this room to hook up the tv and a couple of retro consoles. but if i can get a new outlet installed i wanna make sure there's enough plugs, i'll even get a power strip, and hook the ol' playstation one that way. also, the only game i have right now is castlevania: symphony of the night. i need to look into getting more ps1 games.

derek221122 If you want the best picture out of the standard PS1 you should look into getting an RGB Scart cable, it’s much better than composite and the best way to play the PS1.

I only know about Capcom VS SNK 2, but if you have a launch PS3 model that can play PS2 discs, it's basically identical. However, if you have a later PS3 and are playing the PSN version of it, it adds about 3-4 frames of input lag, due to PS2 Emulation settings. I imagine lots of other games are like this too

PS3 normal is pretty much how it's 'meant' to look because you're always going to get a bit of degradation in graphic quality when capturing the PS1 unfortunately. :/

Interesting. The best way to play Playstation 1 games is the original way is via CRT. Coming from the original retro gaming purest. Most people don't have CRT's and the other option is hdtv's.

I tried to play a playstation 1 game on the psone and all I hear is sound. I'm guessing my psone is broken because I switched the composite cable from my playstation 2 and it still didn't work. I then started my playstation 2 up and it worked, so I know it's not the cable. The CRT also shows playstation 2 but nothing for my psone. Thoughts on this? I'm curious if there are people who know how to fix this.

On a PS2 console all you need is a PS1 controller in memory card on a CRT tv

A component cable (YPbPr) on a PS2 with texture smoothing on looks the best most of the time. The PS2 uses a true smoothing mode that actually smooths the textures where as the PS3 "smoothing" is a much less desirable anti aliasing to the entire image making the overall image quality blurry, both 2D and 3D, and doesn't do the actual textures. See Vagrant Story original vs smooth for a shockingly good looking difference playing on PS2 which by the way is not using emulation, it literally has a PS1 built in that manages the controllers, and for backward compatibility of course. I wish I knew more about how it works but the PS2 is also basically an upgraded PS1, always loved the visual boost! Granted it's not 100% and some PS1 titles will have visual anomalies with PS2 options.

Great video thanks for the insight and info! I just bought a PS2 and an RCA HDMI converter to hook up to my 46" Samsung LED 1080P TV but when i was playing tomb raider games(ps1) on it. Even certain PS2 games, as well, the picture was very blurry with the textures. You think a PS2 component cable would help sharpen the image? I also put the texture mapping to smooth and it still same issue. How'd you get to driver 2.0 in the version menu? Im on version 1.12

The component cables might be a little better. It’s not a huge difference though. The driver version I think might be because I was using a slim PS2.. I also have an older one with the other version.

Yeah i just bought a PS2 and a bunch of items for it online, like games, memory card, RCA HDMI converter etc And I just don't want to take it all back after the picture being very blurry. I heard S-video up-scalers work great too. Since my TV has the 5 color outlets in the back. Its just a pain to get the PS1/PS2 games to look good on the new HDTVs nowadays.

The ps3 is convenient but I’ve known some games I have on PS1 don’t work on there for some reason. I’m also not sure if there’s a way to get the memory card saves of the ps3.

Return Fire is a Playstation One game that I tried to run on my Playstation 3 and just for whatever when you try to have your vehicle leave the base it freezes everytime. As for getting saves off a PS3? I use a PSP.

Weird... It made my scratched up crap copy of diablo 1 run better than ever lol. And then I finally beat that monster of a game on hell mode with my bro. He was a freakin barb. Worst char choice in the game since sooo many baddies use ranged attacks and the barb is like... You know... Useless kinda? LOL! : ) I was the wizard though and me freezing enemies for him to body was actually a pretty dope strategy. I was too weak against certain enemies so his strength came in handy. Great game honestly. But very hard for new comers. You really gotta learn the feel and choices of the game. Many choices HURT your character and keep you from being the best that your char can be. And I don't see how two barbarians could ever beat the game on hell mode... I'd love to see that lolz. Disk was still effed up though. The end of the game dialogue got stuck on repeat lol. "Blurs your vision, your vision, your vision, your vision" It was really funny and weird.

Just some info missing from the video that is helpful. Ps2 plays ps1 games via hardware the Emotion chip is built into the ps2. PS3 playback is emulation. I think in Europe we are lucky with the retro stuff because of RGB Scary it is an amazing format that when connected to a CRT looks HD

That is only partially true. The Fat PS2s and first rev of PS2 slims play PS1 games natively but all the later PS2 slims play them via software emulation,

@@charvelgtrs does it say rev 1 on a ps2 slim to know if it is harware based. I want to use a ps2 and slim model seems more inline with keeping my setup streamlined but it would seem that playing ps1 on a ps2 should be through hardware not emulation for the best results.

Most modern TVs won't display anything when you go this route because they dont support the ps1 resolution(240p) over component. When you load the game, the screen just goes blank

hice muchas pruebas en diablo 1 de psx, y he notado que en PS3 (super slim con hen), tiene menos frames , pero en PS2 (fat con popsloader), se notan mucho mas fluidas y completas las animaciones, dando mejor rendimiento, tendria que hacer comparativas con juegos quemados en CD, al parecer al ser juegos fisicos la consola activa la retrocompatibilidad en modelos fat, y al usar POPS, solo la emula

It seems easiest to play PS1 on PS3 assuming you're using current HDTV

The opening differences are probably due to PS1 and PS2 being composite, while PS3 is component/HDMI.

Has anyone tried a digital psone or ps2 classic off the ps3 store on a crt through component? Is it comparable to ps1 and ps2 games on a ps2 through component on crt?

No because PS3 only outputs in 480i even for PS1 games, it wouldn't be a good way to play them at all.

4:45 ps2 uses the same component cables as ps3, why not use that? At least for clarity reasons

My PS2 is backwards compatible on many games my PS5 I donated to the poor because I found it overpriced and garbage buts that's my personal opinion

the ps3 looks better with smoother on for ps1 on most 3d games only but on 2d games it looks like shit too much pixelation with hdmi .running at 1080 and 720 .. i think everyone will agree for playing ps1 games on ps3 will stick with svideo mode or 480I 480p no higher

I have a PS1 still, I play my PS1 games fine on a PS1 with the Hyperkin HDMI Cable, it's great

Well, i think PSOne emulation on PC is a better option than PS3. You can haver better results with prrety cheap hardware.

The best way to play original playstation games is on the original psx model, plugged into a crtv with scart

Emulators pretty much play them flawlessly and gets rid of the texture warping. If they released new Playstations with the actual hardware with upgraded specs to do what the emulators do that would be a great selling point. I just like playing stuff on the TV.
