One thing to note for the campers/ outdoorsmen- the bed dimensions for both trucks, the depth. I can not put a Yeti 110 cooler in the Taco and use my tonneau cover. The bed walls are extremely short, worse than the Nissan Frontier leaving things sticking out exposed. It does fit in the Maverick though. Side beds walls are much taller. Just a valid point worth noting for some.

That makes sense if you're focusing solely on off-road performance. Since most people don't off-road their trucks, I can see how unibody and body on frame can be compared. IMO It's because of this, people cross shop Ridgelines, Tacoma's, Colorado's,etc.

@@guyod1 fair point on towing. You'd have to go away from the Tremor model to get a decent amount of towing performance. And that would still be 1/3 less capable than the Taco. I would think that would lead to a cross shopping of the Ridgeline. I have four kids and when they were young we used an Expedition, a Sequoia, and Mazda CX-9. We enjoyed all 3 and they all had towing packages. We towed within the Expedition twice and the Sequoia once. Never the Mazda. That was over the course of 12 years of total ownership. They did great but never really had a reason to use it. I think that's more often the case with asphalt warriors

I like that the taco has some controls on the ceiling, particularly the locker and that sort of thing. They don't need to be in your immediate reach since you'll use them in a low speed environment almost exclusively and it's a space that is often underutilized in other vehicles. Everyone else wants to cram all the controls right into the center cluster, and the space above and to the left of the driver often gets maybe one or two switches for lights or something.

Upon being assigned a VIN number I saw the price had jumped from 29k to 35k discovered they had ordered it as a 4wd. Had to resubmit the order in November of 2021. Found out I had missed the order window and had to wait for production to restart on 12/21. As of spring of 2022 I still had no order date or a VIN number and I had no idea when it was being built. I couldn’t wait any longer as I needed to sell my existing truck to help pay for the new one and couldn’t sell that if I didn’t have something to drive. Ended up settling for a 2022 Tacoma that was built and enroute. Have had it for almost a year now, yesterday I got an email from ford saying my ranger ( which I canceled and got my deposit back) was still delayed due to supply shortages. That’s almost 2 years after I ordered it. Don’t be surprised if you keep getting punted down the chain. I guess bronco buyers were more important to Ford. I recently was able to test drive a used XLT Maverick. I was very impressed with the power and liked it overall. A few things bothered me. The first was how loud the horn sounds inside the cabin. It’s as loud inside as it is outside. I guess Ford skimped on sound deadening materials. The second was that issue with the radio screen. It is a bit annoying that they angle it downward. Third was the back seat wasn’t terribly big but doable for someone with 2 kids. Idk about fitting teenagers back there but for younger kids it’s not bad.

Thanks for arming consumers that may be looking to venture into a smaller sized truck instead of a full size or getting into their first truck with information about what these two have to offer. I know it's for the views - and I really do enjoy seeing this comparison - but these two vehicles are very difficult to compare. They're built for similar functions, but also drastically different functions as well. I know my Maverick FX4 can and will do most of what any off road truck can do 95% of the time on a trail. It's that 5% I know it can't do and I'm fine with that! I've taken it off road at least a dozen times in less than a year of ownership which is more than I know most raptors have been out and I have a great time, because in the end it's just about getting out there and having fun. It carries my work gear and can tow 4k lbs, not large lumber or a massive toy hauler and I'm fine with that. It carries 5 passengers arguably more comfortably than most mid size pickups. My favorite thing is when my tall ass coworkers get in my truck from there massive lifted king cabs and seeing how surprised they are at how much space there is. And almost fully loaded mid spec was sub $30k. It fits in my apt garage and is incredibly easy to drive and park. All in all I don't regret my decision at all and with bigger tires and some other aftermarket parts I've added, it's a great deal of fun.

I think that most Tacoma's spend their time on improved dirt roads though. I dont think to many of them get used how they should. I see people driving around in their lifted Tacoma's with 33's and roof top tents and crap bolted all over them and in all the time I spend off the beaten path, I almost never see them actually out there doing stuff. Where I do see them is the same places I drag my 24' Jayco travel trailer with like 9" of ground clearance. Reality is most of these people could drive a Maverick and do all the things they want to do without issue. They just saw to many commercials of people wear flannel shirts, drinking IPA's in the woods with Tacoma's in the background and thought it looked cool.

I wanted a Tacoma until I actually sat down in one and drove it. They are really lacking in so many ways. For that reason I decided to get a 4runner. It’s more practical and debatably more usable as far as storage. With the seats laid down you get 6’ of space compared to 5’ like this tacoma. All while being better offroad. Departure, breakover angles etc. better seating position, more head room, more room for passengers. It’s really just all around better. To me the tacoma equates to a Jeep Wrangler. It’s cool and all but when it comes down to practicality its awful

I love having the bed for things I don’t want inside with me like when I make dump runs, firewood runs, lawn care stuff, that kinda thing. For hard-core off road you can't beat a body on frame setup, dual range t-case, and solid axle. That being said most "off road" versions of any truck regardless of manufacturer rarely see anything more than gravel much less trail time so personally I think the maverick is a better fit for the average person that wants a 4x4 with a little extra to help with getting around in the winter. I also believe that ford has a homerun with the maverick as a whole with its only downside is that they can't build them fast enough. Now the Tacoma has always been a solid seller but just like the Colorado redesign and the ranger redesign they keep getting taller and the beds are getting less and less accessible from beside the truck. The maverick to me from a hauling standpoint and doing truck stuff is much more user friendly with the shorter bed side height and lower bed floor making if more user friendly

You can compare Maverick vs Tacoma Off Road, which is almost same price.

I was really surprised how much the Maverick matched or exceeded the Taco in specs. Especially utility and comfort. I'm willing to bet that the acceleration will go to the Maverick as well. For what most people will use these trucks for, the Maverick seems like the better buy. Real trucks have gotten so expensive and I imagine it'll be rare for the majority of Tacoma owners to go beyond gravel for their off-roading utilization. The Tacoma still sets the standard for the mid-size trucks but I think most people see it more as a status symbol. All IMO.

Except reliability. I guess it all depends on what you need, but this shouldn't of been compared since the maverick is not a true truck.

@@KillerX1911 I think the comparo is meant more for people who aren't familiar with the capabilities of trucks and would use this to determine what their uses of a truck would be. I use to not consider the Ridgeline a truck but a lot of people do. I think the term truck has morphed into different things for different people.

@KillerX1911 the 2.0 ecoboost has been around a long time and has proven to be reliable. If the Tacoma is more reliable, it's not by much.

@@TheDfelan I'm not a brand whore at all, and I think the Maverick has its place in the world (Toyota doesn't even have something comparable to it) but comparing the Ecoboost to the legendary Toyota V6, that's an insane comment. I personally own a Tacoma, and the Tacoma is lacking behind other companies with technology, and they understand that, but Toyota's moto has always been "Do something really well, and improve on that" while other manufacturer's love to redesign everything, and that's where they get in trouble. Toyota is #1 for reliability hands down. (We will see about the next gen turbo models, I have a feeling they may drop off that list because of the turbo models)

@KillerX1911 "I'm not a brand whore" then make a total brand whore statement. I'm not a Ford fanboy, my last 3 cars were Hondas. I did my research on this engine, though, did you?

There is no comparison. One will last 500,000 miles with basic maintenance and the other is untested and will most likely not last 300,000.
