Alright, people with a lot more experience and knowledge than me are telling me that Gränsfors produce overpriced axes that are not that great. I disagree. Why? I just do! Why should you care? You shouldn’t that’s the point!

Excellent video. I enjoyed your commentary on bikes and axes. I hold a similar opinion, just use what makes you happy. Keep up the good work.

Use what you like, Gränsfors axes are very good in my opinion. They are my favourite after my grandfathers axes.

I agree with you on all points. Like you said nothing comes perfect and like all axes you need to adjust them. The problem I have with a lot of Gransfors fans is from my interactions they deny this so hard. If I complain the handle on the American felling axe handle is too thick and can cause tennis elbow out of the box, but I am told that it must be me who is the problem, I must have small hands etc. They cant take any criticism of their favourite axe brand. A real cult has built up on the reputation of these axes by people who show little to no evidence of actually getting out and using them , who then upsell new people into spending way too much on a tool that probably wont be the best option for them. I always reccomend cheaper axes as the best option for new people because it gives you opportunity to try lots of different axes for less and find the size and type you like best. after putting a bit of time in swinging them, then is the time to splash out on something you like whether its Tuatahi, Gransfors, Lamaca etc in a weight, handle lenght and size you have found you prefer. I actually really like a few gransfors products, namely their splitting maul, and they are nicely made tools albeit not as high performance as you can make them with a bit of time. thanks for the video, its a good take on it

Gränsfors can be bought in pretty much every outdoor store here in Sweden. It's sold to people who don't work in the woods as another tool to bring when camping or hunting. I believe that the cult started there. Or at least the misconceptions of what makes a good axe. The videos that you and Skillcult have about axe handles were such an eye opener for me. I've studied them, rewatching multiple time. and then I decided to try to thin a handle down and wouldn't you know it? No more pain! It is insane to think that information like that doesn't reach every axe used before they even make their first swing! Another issue is that I believe that is wasn't until recently, with the aid of KZfaq, that people started to really discuss axes in an inviting way. I remember when I got my first axe 15 years ago, asking on a forum how I should treat the handle, if at all. The replies were smug and combative. I remember one telling me that the only oil I should treat the wood with should be the sweat from my hands. People like Skillcult, Kevin and yourself are doing an amazing job by making a lot of information easily accessible. The issue is you are facing people who have preconceived ideas that they have formed with no experience of their own. I hope that I can one day contribute more to the conversation, helping people like you three have helped me.

@@moonlightfarmer yeah handle shock is such a majorly overlooked factor. Skillcult is really the one who got the ball rolling on this

Well said. Buy and use what you love to use and what works for you. Also people sometimes overlook the fact that there can be no "best axe" because it depends on what types of wood the axe is designed to cut. What works in one part of the world may not work so well in another place.

Very true. Gränsfors are designing axes for the woods I work in here in Sweden. Maybe that’s why I love them so much?

If you like it you like it. From a performance and practicality stand point they are not as good as a Hultafors HY10 series. The HY10s are slightly thicker and the steel is softer which is less prone to chipping and easier to file. Also not to mention the price is 1/3 and produced in the same country. From my own personal experience the Hultafors axes are better quality in terms of forging and hang. MY SFA had a slightly crooked head and came loose within the first few hours. I just can't recommend Gransfors since they are mediocre at best with a insane price tag.

I have one of those as well. I it's currently my fourth favourite axe! I think preference is more about what you get used to rather than what is best on paper. My favourite reviewer is MKDH, he has a video on preference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9R8ireHud2zmI0.html

I think comes down to a man's preference what he feels happy with. I have several axe's. No special ones, Axes I'v bought at local hardware store and at yard sales / farm auctions. Single and double bite axes. Single bites I'v left as is some I cut the handles down to be more of a camp axe ( I call them cruisers) some I'v put longer handles on. My favorite axe is a double bite axe that belonged to my grandfather ( Pap as I called him). There's no makers name on it there is a worn proof / smiths mark. It is the best axe I'v ever used GOOD quality steel, It sharpens easy and stays sharp for a long time. I used it to clear trees and brush to put in my home. Pap used it a lot on the far, I use it time to time to cut fire wood.

@@moonlightfarmer I have 2, Paps and a short handle cruiser. I like the double bite because it delivers more energy in the cut ( a little deeper cut) and you can go longer before having to sharpen. I make a cut and spin it to the other edge for the next cut, Just a thing I started doing a long time ago for fun.
