Kindred is the man/entity in the story. People shun (run) from death, and this made him lonely, since people always tried to stay as far away from him as possible. The reason you know that this man/entity is the person that became Kindred is because Lamb tells Wolf, he took an axe and split himself right down the middle. The marks on their masks, when one of them is flipped and joined with the other forms a heart that had been split in RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE. This is why Lamb and Wolf are tied so closely together, because they ARE the same person/entity, who was likely the Grim Reaper of Runeterra that got lonely after seeing everybody run from him/it, and it's why Lamb tells the story so gently to wolf, and why both of them recognize the truth of the story deep down in their heart, which they both share as two halves, represented as carvings upon their masks. This also explains why Lamb and Wolf call each other by name with affectionate tones: "Dear Wolf.", "Little Lamb.", they have become friends, by making a friend out of their former self, by splitting the ONE in two, so that the two that resulted from said splitting could become friends, and cure the original entities loneliness. They value each other, because they are all that they have, both as a divided soul, and as a cherished bond. Having said all of this, I do not like Kindred as a character, and hold a firm distaste for their personalities, because at the end of the day, they are nothing more than the product of a being who couldn't cope with its own existence and the consequences of that existence (people running from the entity known as Death/The Grim Reaper), and ran from Its own existence by splitting itself in two to cure its loneliness. Yet, it acts super entitled when it comes to its duty of ending lives, thinks the idea of chasing and brutally murdering those who refuse to accept It as a fun game, and has the audacity to call others dignified for choosing to accept the arrow, as if it were some high and mighty being, as if death holds any sort of dignity, let alone INDIGNITY. People die, there's nothing to judge. And frankly, when a person dies, they shouldn't be worried about what someone else thinks of how they choose to die, they should only be concerned with their own internal views. This is why I call Kindred pretentious, for Kindred hands them the option of deciding to die with dignity or die without dignity and be ran down like prey. It's judgmental, worse, its arrogant and disgustingly audacious of a being with that poor excuse for a coping mechanism caused by loneliness to have any right WHATSOEVER to go around saying this shit to other people. Kindred is not some two-sided, objective, personification of death. Kindred is just a lonely entity that was unable to handle its loneliness, and is now stupidly trying to enforce its twisted view of death onto others, not-to-mention treating people's fate as a game (Wolf) while deeming to judge and offer (Lamb) an option for how the person dies. Not really an offer, just a horseshit-borne method of taking their own internal weakness out on others.

the fact that lamb looks a lot more human than wolf could also represent the differences in the death their offer: Wolf's chase is brutal, primitive and more animal-like, while lambs arrow is a more humane and dignified one. that might also be the reason why she stands in her feet as a bipedal; to represent honor and dignity. to be honest now I can't unsee the fursuit. thanks, I hate it!

Well, ya, the idea of the two is Ying and Yang. Wolf is black, Lamb is white, Wolf is instinct (nature), Lamb is Mind (Nurture), Lamb is the body, Wolf is the soul, Wolf can feel emotion but not understand it, Lamb can understand emotion but not feel it. They are two parts that make one whole. The story of the grey man who split himself in two. Grey is the between the color of black and white or the color of them combined. So yes, Lamb represents human aspects like thought, understanding, beauty, dignity, and grace, and wolf represents Natural aspects.

The grim reaper is a combination of pre christian death gods, something outside of god, he's never been "just a spirit". Unless you're thinking of Ankou which are spirits, a different entity from the Reaper. In ancient religions, especially those with a pantheon, gods were not like Christianity portrays a god. They are more like superhumans than omnipresent and omnipotent. They could be beaten, tricked, and even killed. That's what he was pointing out. They abide by what a death god would be in ancient religions, not in the modern Western view of a god. One example is Greco-Roman mythology that has different gods that preside over different forms of death as well as personifications of death as a concept.

a running theory I've had for a while is with jhin. What made jhin into the character he is? the theory involves him somehow witnessing kindred and seeing lamb take the life of someone who accepted their death. 1.There is brutality in Lamb's swift arrow , snuffing out all that there once was in a quick strike , no chance to think further , no chance to pray , no chance to turn around, to try and survive and there is kindness in Wolf's chase , hope mingling with despair as you run away ; maybe you'll be able to outrun them , even though you never will , maybe they'll get tired , even though they never are. (this is my own explanation as to why their masks are inverted - each of them is whole in their own way even if they're made to be halves of one another ) 2. The idea of the sacrificial lamb and the wolf that is said to kill more than it needs to eat , leaving corpses lying around .
@dangernoodle3343
@dangernoodle3343 2 жыл бұрын
Another thing on this point is that they are one being split into two and it shows in how they act. Despite Lamb being merciful, she can't feel emotions which can almost make her seem indifferent to a death. On the opposite end, Wolf can very much feel emotions but he lacks any understanding of what they are which can make him seem overjoyed to kill.

This is going to be a bit long, so be forewarned... I wanted to make a short input about the visual design points you made about lamb. I completely agree that lamb isn't distinguishable from other goat/sheep animals enough, maybe the lack of horns would be the only indicator but even then it doesn't seem specific enough. But, the fact that lamb is very humanoid (a satyr, faceless with hands) I think it helps express the opposites in kindred. Wolf isn't just the violent hunt or a representation to keep running from death. Wolf also represents the primitive/animalistic urges and forces in death; it isn't fast, it isn't clean, and it isn't painless. Lamb, on the other hand, is more than just acceptance of death, or a clean death, she represents a more human aspect of dying, one that animals cant understand. The concept of choice, and the act of mercy killing. The half of kindred that gives you a choice is always Lamb, Wolf is always ready to pounce but Lamb holds him back waiting for the dying person's decision. and Lamb is the one who according to the short story spends her time on the battlefield so she can end the suffering of fallen soldiers. The idea of ending suffering instead of always fighting on is a very human one that animals are not familiar with. So, I think that another aspect of the divide between Lamb and Wolf is through how primitive/advanced they are, and that is very well represented in their appearence and in how they speak. Lamb, as you mentioned has a bow, a refined modern human weapon. She sands on two legs, and the way the speaks and explains things to wolf show an almost human nature to her, that compliments her humanoid appearence. Wolf, at least to me seems like a savage animal; he hunts with his jaws, not weapons. Wolf also seems barely intelligent (like a smart pet dog) and that does feed into the idea that wolf is more animal than human, the opposite of Lamb. But, in the end, Kindred character design revolves around the Ying-yang concept, so in each one of the halves there is a bit of the other; so while Lamb does kill as an act of mercy, she is very detached from feeling anything towards the dying person, to Lamb that person os just another kill. Wolf, while an animal that is on a very short leash to Lamb, still speaks and can understand basic human interactions and behaviar, he isn't completely an animal and isn't completely wild. well that was my rant on the human appearence of Lamb and why she looks a tad like a furry

Lamb still detach herself from humanity by her feelings. It's implied (also in legends of Runeterra) that Wolf feels a lot of feelings, thrill, fun, sadness, but do not understand them, he doesn't "know" them. Lamb, on the other hand, knows feelings, she knows what they are, but she doesn't feel them, and often asks what sadness is, for exemple.

That you say that Kindred is not there for every single death, is contrary to what they say themselves, isn't it? "Wolf chases, what does not willingly go" (Implying that there are only two options: To go peacefully (Lamb) or to go fighting, and get chased down by Wolf). "They know we'll come... Yet they are never prepared" (Implying that they are there at the moment of Death, always). "Long have we shadowed your deeds. Turn and face us now!" (To Katarina, also implying that they have been there for every kill). Of course you can argue that the "Us" is them seeing themselves as more than individuals, but as a Force, and thus they know that Death, as a concept, will be there for everyone and everything, but I am not sure I buy that entirely. I think the difference is in how we see them. You, Skyen, see Kindred as a God (or Gods), whereas I see them as an anthropomorphic being who IS death. They are the literal concept of Death in physical form, and is omnipresent in so far as Death happens, and in very rare cases they can be found elsewhere, too.

Okay, so you mentioned the hooks, but I think it goes a little farther than that. Wolf absolutely has a hook because that's what you use to catch and forcefully remove something from an environment, like a fishhook or like "giving someone the hook" on stage (very fitting).However, when you turn that upside down, not only do you get something like a yin/yang symbol if you put them together, which is really cool, but you also get a shepherd's crook; something used to gently guide an animal to where you want them to go. That symbol specifically can take on either aspect, and I just love how they did that.

If you really think about it, Noxus and Demacia both already visually represent which of the two (Lamb or Wolf) they would take in death. Such as with Noxus, they don't visually have wolves on their attire but how they look fits the concept of the Wolf. For example, Darius and Draven's weapons clearly weren't meant to give quick painless deaths. They were meant to crush the enemies that stand before them, leaving brutal gory messes behind much like how Wolf gives brutal death. Even in their armor, more jagged tones can be seen, the colors are harsher and crimson (the color of blood) is often there in that color scheme. Demacia, likewise, has more refined looking weapons. Garen's weapon is beautifully curved in an way that would kill quicker and not leave half as much a mess behind as Darius's axe. Fiora's rapier is elegant, and realistically speaking in the game is used for quickly kill the enemy in her passive. In a way, it's clear how each nation would accept the duo. Demacia looks visually more refined much like how Lamb symbolizes a quick refined death, meanwhile Noxus appears harsher visually, with weapons that would seem to prolong the death of their foes and signalize the brutality of war, which Wolf represents in how he hunts down his prey and kills them brutally. Does that make sense?

I absolutely love kindred because of how well it was all thought out. Plus the champion is just kindof... set apart from the rest, and i like that. I also like how lamb says “i will never run from you dear wolf” but this is paradoxical because wolf only begins the chase after the choice is made. Wolf will never get to chase Lamb because it isn’t her fate to die at the hands of wolf. They cannot exist without each other. one represents a sort of fleeting hope that one might chase in an attempt to deny their own mortality and inevitable demise, and the other represents this solemn and calm acceptance. They arent just another representation of light/dark, order/chaos, or ying/yang and i really appreciate that.

The last bit of the first short story really strikes me. "Until the day there is only Kindred" and "I will never run from you" imply a distinctly omnicidal bent to them (or at least Lamb; Wolf seems more endlessly homicidal than gradually omnicidal, if there's a difference to that distinction). Also, I'd like to repeat my suggestion about examining the differences between character design techniques used in visual and textual media (visual depiction versus visual description).

It makes no sense to say that the representation of death is anything-cidal. It would be like saying that the Grim Reaper is the one who hunts you down with his scythe while you still live - he doesn't, he's just the dude who turns up to collect your soul after you've died. The Reaper merely plays the role of psychopomp, guiding your immortal soul to the afterlife. Similarly Kindred is not the one *responsible* for your death - rather they are a being that represents the physical process of death. The whole hunting motif they have going on is a metaphor for facing death with either acceptance or defiance ('Those who run from death stood still in life.'), but ultimately it makes no difference because you're already dead anyway.

I've always thought that Lamb's line "I will never run from you, dear Wolf" is actually a mockery on him. Everything that the Wolf wants is that his victims try to run so he can enjoy the thrill of the hunt, by accepting her end, Lamb will be denying the Wolf of his last chance of having fun after the death of everything else.

Interesting viewpoint, Kaz. I'd actually go the route of "of course they're omnicidal, they're f*cking death", so kudos on actually giving that some thought. Though I'd change that from physical process of death to metaphysical embodiment of the moment of death. Seems more accurate that way, since nothing about them is physical in the literal sense.

It could also be more of a philosophical statement. I don't think wolf will run from lamb's arrow, in the end they would probably just end each other like they did so many others. When Kindred dies in game we can see wolf immediately attacking lamb's falling body before they both dissolve into a shadow. I believe that's the case here: Wolf chases Lamb down but then without lamb he too dies. Either because they physically literally cannot exist without the other or he becomes too lonely without lamb and accepts death upon himself. I imagine his last moments like that would be him seeing lamb and feeling her arrows ram through him and he accepts them and returns to Lamb to become Kindred yet again.

Kindred is very much the one that takes you when you die. Everyone. Lamb explains this herself when she is telling her story to Wolf. "All must meet this man." They are death itself, all of it. Everyone who dies encounters them. They don't "cause" all death (although they are capable of causing death if they feel like it), but they ARE death.

From what I know and understand, Riot already posted/noted before that Kindred's abilities in-game does not reflect its capabilities in the lore. They also mentioned that Kindred will also eventually be the end of the celestials, like A Sol, Bard, Soraka, etc. When nothing is left that is capable of dying, Lamb and Wolf will both kill each other. Also, there was never only ONE Kindred. Kindred exists in every part of Runeterra except the Shadow Isles(since nothing is really capable of death there anymore) and the only distinct difference between them is their appearance because it was mentioned before that their appearance depends on how the person views kindred. It depends on their culture, as seen in Ionia with Spirit Blossom Kindred(this skin is actually canon or so I've heard).

I went into this video with low expectations since Kindred reminds me intensely of Pagan spirits and deities (just missing the cycle of life and death rather than it being seen as a finality which isn't all that common in Pagan religions/cultures) which are normally poorly understood. Though one thing you missed I really appreciate about Lamb's and Wolf's dichotomy: Wolf feels emotions but shows no understanding of the consequence for his actions while lamb seems to be unable to feel emotions but fully understands the consequences of their actions. This makes Wolf seem far more innocent and Lamb as far more insidious.

This is really cool, I really like this video. Interestingly enough, your point about iconography might be addressed in the new skins for Garen and Darius (well probably just Darius). His new skin, God King Darius, incorporates a wolf onto his axe/scythe. All his animations interact with this spectral wolf that comes with him. Its interesting to think about now that you mention what Kindred should mean to Noxus.

IMO lamb is wonderfully designed. You have the black faced lamb's who are black in detail in their legs and face but not their coat. Like lamb is with the dark mask and dark legs. Lamb's also have droopy ear syndrome which is represented here. Maybe its because I am aware of all the different types of lambs as my family use to be farmers, that im aware of the small designs but its so cool.

Nachtkriecher Karthus gave himself to the shadow isles which is where his power came from I guess. Kindred has a voice line towards the Blade of the Rune King when wolf ask’s what the blade it is, lamb answers saying “it’s of a land not welcome to us”

I agree they put themselves in a little bit of a pickle with making them very world renowned. As far as designs go for other characters who could represent them via iconography or motifs (TB had mentioned Darius, Katarina, etc. for wolf motifs), that's where I think they would run into a big problem, not only in redesigning so many champions. For kingdoms like Demacia and Noxus, with so many armored, military involved champions, they would risk designs blending together too much. They have their respective color schemes that link characters together and a color scheme is a very broad thing to work with, where repeating motifs can be much more difficult to incorporate. Where you aren't super limited with a set color scheme and how you use it, there are only so many generally easy-to-recognize wolf/lamb symbols. Especially in Demacian warriors' case, trying to incorporate lamb symbology into designs would be difficult. Lambs as an animal aren't associated with any kind of traditional strength or fierceness, where wolves are a key animal in design to symbolize brutality, ferociousness, and danger. You could arguably use a ram, but you lose the kind of gentle, unnerving dignity that Lamb's character holds.

i like to think that deities in runeterra are a result of people's belief, rather than the other way around. The magic in the world is eithin verybody,, even those that arent talented at using it. But when a lot of people believe somethibg, will it into existance, manifest it..that magic makes it reality.

This has probably been mentioned before, but Kindred also has lore in other games related to League of Legends. Sometimes, lamb is a lamb; others she is actually a little girl; in the freljord, she is actually a goat. Even Bilgewater has beliefs that it is not lamb and wolf, but it is actually a minnow and a jaull-fish, respectively. I think that having these changes could have inspired some really cool character design or even just skins

Just as a thought on your gods part. Kindred being the god of death is referenced to be a Hunter, so its almost like Kindred is the one who makes sure you die when you are due. This makes me imagine Wolf is more for people who make bargains to live, necromancers and the like while i think you hit the nail on the head for Lamb, people who are in pain and accept Death. Sad to think of but Lamb would probably collect children that sadly dont make it as well then. What i would love to see is Lamb helping someone considered ''Evil'' or Wolf hunting down a ''Good'' person because Kindred should be Neutral. Your life does not matter to Them, its your Death that gets their attention. This would then lead people to belief that all people have a time to die and they should face it proudly, otherwise they face the Hunter and dishonor. That can give strength to Kindred as almost closer to Death in the Terry Pratchett series, more a guide to give the spirit a push in the right direction. Not really good or bad, Death just IS.

I know this isn't canon anywhere as far as I know but it's entirely possible that in the culture of runeterra it's considered disrespectful or otherwise a bad idea to wear or carry iconography of Wolf or Lamb. It could be seen as inviting death to do such a thing, I can really think of an existing real life society that had a custom like that but generally death gods were more feared and not messed wioth and rarely depicted in various ancient cultures.

Tbh i think kindred is there for all deaths, it might not be an all powerfull god like in the abrahamic religions but i dont think it is like in the norse ones either because kindred is a fact in runeterra and people everywhere see it and pray to it, contrary to gods more a kin to norse mythology gods like the targonian ones or the frieljord once, even if names change they are still kindred, even gods and demons have a place where they are or inhabit there is no omnicience or omnipresense but kindred is different unless it would make an effort to be known world wide and spread its name to be known like when it appeared Magga in "A good death" short story, even though it says she came to it and not the other way around and it said that it would come to Magga's companions as it was their time to meet kindred, that and because Magga still saw kindred even though her death was natural and in front of royals it was not particularly important or fun as she accepted lambs arrow so no need to be chased by wolf, also last bit of lore supporting kindred being omnipresent when it comes to death is the grey man, fiddlesticks calls kindred the grey man so the pale man in the kindred trailer the one that everything alive has to meet assuming fiddlesticks knows about kindred story the one lamb tells to wolf we can assume its true and as lamb herself says everything has to meet the pale man now kindred

The design would've worked better if their Ultimate was a switch/transformation type. First form is a ranged humanoid archer huntress with ovine features followed a spectral giant wolf, second form is a melee barbarian spear hunter with lupine features followed by a spectral angelic sheep. It would communicate the theme much better and make for interesting gameplay, even if League already did have two shapeshifters.

I suppose technically Demacia incorporates a lot of the colour white in their iconography- you could retroactively view this as a nod to their understanding of Lamb. And yes I know it’s because it’s the colour of petricite - but it could be a case where Lamb is white *because* of Demacia, and having such a major nation associate the colour white with their military, and therefore with death. So the fact Lux, Xin Xiao, Garen etc all wear white armour could be taken as a nod to Kindred (and Jarvan needs a rework)

Dr. House once said "You can't die with dignity; we can't die with it." What that is, is a call, a call to those on death's doorstep to not give up, to keep fighting because their life is precious, maybe not to them and definitely not to him but it is precious to someone. While you are alive your life is not solely your own. We all have a duty to live for those that care for and about us. The Noxians fighting till the end, saying "IF YOU WANT ME, COME GET ME BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO CATCH ME FIRST" is probably the only thing I like about them and the only thing I have in common with them. Fight on and live. You sure as hell know Pantheon would tell you to considering most of his "moving" quotes...
