#TFSA #Investing #Saving
Today I speak about my understanding of the difference between a Tax-Free Savings Account, Tax- Free Investment Account and a normal savings account i.e Notice Deposit and Fixed Term Savings accounts. I share my experience with having a TFSA with Old Mutual and having one with EasyEquities. I hope at the end of this video you will have more clarity about the three/four different accounts.
To read up more on ETFs visit the following EasyEquities link: etfs.easyequities.co.za/ I will also be talking about ETFs in the next video.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ❤️
The information below in this description box is from the SARS (South African Revenue Service) website August, 5th 2020.
Please check the website for any new updates. www.sars.gov.za/TaxTypes/PIT/...
TAX FREE INVESTMENTS
What is it?
Tax Free Investments were introduced as an incentive to encourage household savings. This incentive is available from 1 March 2015.
How will it work?
The tax free investments may only be provided by a licenced bank, long-term insurers, a manager of registered collective schemes (with certain exceptions), the National Government, a mutual bank and a co-operative bank. Service providers must be designated by the Minister in the Gazette. As per the current Regulation, only the above are designated.
This is how it will work:
* You don’t have to pay income tax, dividends tax or capital gains tax on the returns from these investments.
* You can only contribute a maximum of R36 000 per tax year (annual limit). The amount increased from R33 000 to R36 000 effective 1 March 2020.
* Note that any portion of unused annual limit is forfeited (that is, it is not carried forward to the new tax year). Example: Taxpayer X invests R27 000 in year 1. The unused portion of R6000 is NOT roll-over to year 2. In year 2, the taxpayer can only invest R36 000 as per the annual limits.
* There is a life time limit of R500 000 per person.
* If a person exceeds the limits, there is a penalty of 40% of the excess amount. Example: Taxpayer X invests R35 000 - exceeded the annual limit by R2000, 40% of R2000 = R 800 must be paid to SARS. This penalty is added to the normal tax payable on assessment.
* A person can have more than one tax free investment, however, you are limited to the annual limits per tax year. This means you can invest for example R11 000 (Old Mutual), R11 000 (Investec) and R11 000 (Absa). The same will apply if for example you invest in your minor child’s name.
* Note that when returns on investment are added to the capital contributed, the balance may exceed both the annual and/or lifetime limit. The capitalisation of these returns within the account does not affect the annual or lifetime limit. E.g. If you invest R36 000 for the year and receive a return of investment of R5 000, which you have chosen to capitalise, the total amount in the account will be R38 000. The following year, you will still be able to invest your full R36 000 for year.
* However, where a person withdraws the returns and reinvests the same amount, that amount is regarded as a new contribution and impacts on both the annual and lifetime limits. Note that any withdrawals made cannot be replaced, be it returns or capital.
* In a media statement dated 1 March 2017, National Treasury announced that the transfers will be effective only from 1 March 2018. The Regulation will be amended accordingly.
* Parents can invest on behalf of their minor child. The minor child will use his/her own annual or lifetime limits.
* Tax free investment accounts cannot be used as transactional accounts.
* Debit or stop orders and ATM transactions will not be possible from these accounts.
* Only new accounts will qualify as the idea is to encourage new savings, in other words existing accounts may not be converted.
Which accounts will qualify as TFI?
* Fixed deposits
* Unit trusts (collective investment schemes)
* Retail savings bonds
* Certain endowment policies issued by long-term insurers
* Linked investment products
* Exchange traded funds (ETFs) that are classified as collective investment schemes.
What must I do next?
Enquire from a service provider about investing in a tax free investment.
Service providers will provide SARS, twice a year, with the following info:
* Total contributions per tax year;
* Total amounts withdrawn per tax year;
* Total amounts transferred per tax year;
* Total returns on investment for example: interest, dividends, capital losses and capital gains.
The service providers will provide these taxpayers with this information by issuing an IT3(s) Tax Free Investment certificate annually.

Hey Tisa, i am a first year student in University. Based on the high levels of unemployment occuring in SA! I saw best that I should start investing for my future with the little I have currently. I am with popular known Busary schem in SA and with the little allowance they give us students. I am planning on investing 20% of my allowance which ks R1500 currently. Therefore, my initial plan was to save on Tyme bank for a year to atleast have R5000.. To enable me to start investing. Because I see that alot of people are complaining about the Tax free savings account... I would appreciate your opinion on my plan and advice on how i should maybe tackle it in a different direction.

Hey Tisa So I wanted to ask when contributing toward a TFIA and you contribute an amount of R23 000, the reminder R13 000 is not rolled over to the year 2 right but since you mentioned that there’s an annual contribution of R36 000 so in the same year can you later deposit the R13 000 ? Or are you going to get penalised cause maybe the R23 000 has earned interest and it might excess the annual contribution

@chatwithtisa
@chatwithtisa 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Khanyisile, great questions that I’ll be featuring in the next video 🤗 The answer to that question is no there isn’t you can deposit whatever amount you have at anytime as often as you want as long as it does not exceed the R36 000 mark per Tax year (March- February). About Tyme Bank I’ve never heard of them having or offering a TFSA but they have great interest rates on their savings accounts, the longer you keep the money the more interest you earn and if you give them notice before taking it out you qualify for more interest. I think they offer the highest interest rate compared to other banks. An account with them can be used as an emergency fund and saving for specific goals, I think you can have up to 5 different GoalSave accounts 🙂 A Tax free Savings/ investment account should be for the serious long term like 20 years plus in my opinion.

Hey Kate, this is a very important question and I will be featuring it in the Q&A video 😃Well depending on the service provider and what her investment consist of it might be possible to transfer however she should contact her service provider and inquire about this, she should by all means refrain from withdrawing, because what you take out you can not replace.

I have two children I'd like to invest in a Tax free account for them, how do I do that, they are both minors and don't pay tax yet? I also want one for myself and partner. Do I have to divide the limit between the four of us?
@chatwithtisa
@chatwithtisa 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, excellent question😊 I’ll be featuring your question in the next Q&A video too. Yes you can invest for minors, your investment towards their TFSA is considered a donation, and donations Tax will apply if you exceed a maximum donation of R100 000 so R36 000x2= R72 000 so that would mean you’re still on the safe side. For you and your partner, you can both open one for yourselves and make your own contributions too.

I can sense the passion in your voice but this is quite a misleading video. Without knowing the type of OM account that you had and what "shares" you are investing with EE, it's difficult to make a like-for-like comparison. I do agree with you, though, that you should look for tax free 'investment' accounts rather than interest bearing savings accounts.
@chatwithtisa
@chatwithtisa 3 жыл бұрын
You have a point about the ‘fund fact sheet’ which would have outlined what the TFSA with OM was invested in. This however is not a like for like comparison, EasyEquities does offer better funds and allows for way more flexibility, a TFSA that’s invested in ETFs is way better than what I could have ever gotten from old mutual. This video is not misleading however, I understand that that’s how you’ve chosen to interpret it of which you are free to. Thanks for your comment I think understanding ‘fund fact sheets’ and knowing what one is invested in is very important, this is a topic I’ll be getting into soon😊
