Are there any differences between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Which one is better?
That's a very common question amongst beginners and those who are considering starting Jiu Jitsu.
The reality is... yes, there are some differences, but there is also a lot of overlapping between the two styles.
It's not really a matter of which one is better, because both are great, but rather it's more about what you are looking for and what you want to focus on.
The main differences between the 2 styles are their training objectives and the techniques themselves.
Watch this video to learn more about it.

Although I do enjoy sport jiu jitsu.. I tend to put aside many of the sport techniques & dissect mostly moves that can be applied to street situations. I never want to get into the habit of pulling guard on someone & end up doing it in a street fight

To expand on the Gracie Jiu Jitsu topic of being self-defense applicable, my GJJ school (under Royce) includes defenses against strikes thrown standing and on the ground, throws, defenses against being grabbed in different ways, and defense against weapon attacks. We roll like every other BJJ school too.

You’re acting like other BJJ styles aren’t legit because they look like “sport”. Non-Gracie styles are equally effective, just require more strength, stamina, speed, etc. Let’s not forget that the Gracie challenge came about as a way to test skills in a real fight, which evolved into early MMA.

As a practiciomer of Gracie Jiu-jitsu since I was a kid, this an excellent explanation. Breathing and focus on movement as a thought, is the most important thing. Gracie Jiu-jitsu is practiced as science by the Gracie family for 100 years. Brasileiru jujitsu is focused on ability. When someone attempts to grab you, you will immediately understand the difference between Gracie, and regular Jiu-jitsu.

I've been to atleast 4 different gyms over the years, so I'd say that you are more likely to get high quality training from a Gracie Jiujitsu gym than a bjj gym. There are pros and cons to both but if you don't necessarily know a lot, meaning you can't tell the difference between the quality of training it's just safer to go to a Gracie gym.

They are marketing terms. The techniques are developed in Japan during Edo period and codified by Kano Jigoro as Kodokan Judo. Maeda Mitsuyo 前田光世 learned Sumo at his hometown and then Judo at Kodokan when he started studying at Waseda University in Tokyo. His main teacher was Tomita Tsunejirō 富田常次郎, and he was eventually awarded 7 dan by Kodokan. ((秋山楊心流->真之神道流->天神真楊流)+(起倒流))->講道館柔道

MMA Leech Not according to Japanese sources. According to record in Kodokan and two bibliographies that I read about, Maeda found the first Judo Academy in Brazil in 1921, was promoted to 6 dan in 1929 and 7 dan in 1941. He never studied any Japanese Ju Jiutsu style, had promoted Kodokan Judo all his life, and in contact with Kodokan until his death.

@@user-lt8vw4fe4w I understand, brazilian sources are far and few between, but more and more brazilian historians are taking their time to study this matter and they've been finding official papers of that era. They have found that Maeda was teaching in Brazil in 1915, Carlos Gracie was one of his students, here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsqpntZ1q9vdgZs.html He was teaching Kano Jiu Jitsu at the time, not Judo, here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc2XddZ7ldCZdn0.html Most recent book talking about all of this, written by 2 renowned brazilian historians www.amazon.com/MUITO-ANTES-MMA-precursores-formadoras-ebook/dp/B084T7K2V9/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&qid=1592274992&refinements=p_27%3AElton+Silva&s=digital-text&sr=1-1&text=Elton+Silva

MMA Leech What exactly is Kano Jiu Jitsu as mentioned by you? Is it different from Kodokan Judo? Kano Jogoro founded Kodokan Judo, literally means the School of Teaching the Do (The Way), Judo (The Way of Gentle) and wrote books on why he named his school Kodokan and his style Judo. He was a university educator and president by profession and his philosophy is clearly written. I addition, Judo was not a new term that he invented, it was used within Kito-Ryu 起倒流before. The Japanese Ju Jitsu Association has classified existing Ju Jitsu schools into at least 6 different lineages, and Yoshin Ryu 楊心流and Kito-Ryu 起倒流 have highly possible Chinese origins. Again, in Japanese sources, Maeda taught Kodokan Judo only, had contact with Japanese Government and Kodokan until his death, as besides spreading Judo he was also helping Japanese Government to set up Japanese immigrant settlements throughout South America.
@MMALeech
@MMALeech 4 жыл бұрын
@@user-lt8vw4fe4w I'm referring to the nomenclature, not the art itself, regardless if they are different from each other or not. Newspapers in Brazil called his art jiu jitsu, his dojo had a sign that read jiu jitsu as I mentioned in the link above. Helio Gracie said that Maeda called his teachings jiu jitsu. As you know there was a period in time where Judo was not the official name of the art yet, the art was called Jiu Jitsu, Kano Jiu Jitsu, or Judo interchangeably. I'm aware that Maeda helped the japanese government settling many japanese immigrants in Brazil (some were his friends from Kodokan), the japanese were responsible for the modernization of agriculture in many parts of Brazil, among many other important contributions to the country.

Good video brother, I just had a question like I was watching a youtube video of Gracie Jiu Jitsu escaping the mount when getting punched demonstrated by Rener and Rorion Gracie where he simply just sits up and hug the attacker tight and pull him down and work from that. My question is it looked really applicable, functional and cool but I checked other channels on Mount Escapes on youtube not a single one are doing that, they are hip bumping to advance guards like X guard and other crazy freaky complicated techniques. Why is that ? Not a single channel showcasing this variation even once and I am really confused is it not effective or something like that because a jab, cross is effective in an mma, boxing and street fight but in here it looks very different. Your reply is very much appreciated Ossss

Most of YT channels focus on the sport side of BJJ, including mine, although I post some self defense videos once in awhile. Ryron and Rener, on the contrary, teach mostly self defense techniques, they are great instructors and their stuff is great and effective for the self defense scenario. Since sport BJJ has no punches, the techniques do vary a lot, when you add punches to the game the techniques generally become simplified and straight to the point.

I'm thinking it's kinda like the difference between mcnuggets and chicken nuggets. Mcnuggets are chicken nuggets, but when you order mcnuggets you know exactly what you are getting. The brand gives you consistency. Whereas with chicken nuggets there is more diversity, with some of them tasting a lot like mcnuggets and some tasting less like mcnuggets. They aren't necessarily better or worse than mcnuggets, you just have to find the brand that tastes best to you.

The biggest diff in my experience is the "Gracie Combatives program". It's a white belt to blue belt program that teaches you positions and techniques (often gi-less) to not get knocked out by strikes. I know even every Gracie gym is different but from what I understand the spirit of this at least is shared amongst all GJJ gyms, which is why GJJ is ranked higher than BJJ in self defense system rankings.

I tried really really hard about eight hours a day open till I was 34 maybe 36...and then I said I’m not gonna do this anymore I’m just gonna be a teacher I’m just gonna work on my fun stuff that I love to do, and then that way as I get older :) I don’t get hurt at times it’s easy because it’s a lot easier to get hurt I’m 51 I’ll be 52! I started Gracie jujitsu in 1990 I’ve been training ever since I started wrestling when I was four, Greco when I was six, and catch Wrestling when I was 12! I’m telling you if you do stuff like that for years and years it takes a toll on you I finally twisted my knee a little bit, and it’s taking a bit to even get worked out of me I didn’t hurt really it’s gonna take six weeks, and I have to wear a brace. I never had anything like that happen, but that’s really important if you want to have your instructor around helping you need to just let them become teachers.

I learned the limitations of Tae Kwon do at 10 years old when an opponent almost caught my leg kick. Karate & Boxing have no strategy to defend yourself once you are on your back. I was watching a Rickson Garcie documentary and he said " The difference between me and KickBoxers, and Wrestlers "is they do this for sport. This is a real live fight to me." I said Wow. Imho a "sport" style armbar will leave an arm just as broken as a "street" style armbar. I really dont buy into this idea that someone with 3 or more years of bjj is somehow ill equiped to defend themself from a person who doesnt train.

The problem with MMA is that the techniques are for fighting someone in the same weight class. I have only been in a few fights and they were always guys who were much bigger than me and formidable. I would not feel comfortable using MMA technique with a 6 ft 4 athletic guy weighing 220 who has a violent or reckless attitude. Safer to apply Gracie Combatives class in this situation with one exception. Instead of trying to finish the fight the emphasis is on disengaging if possible only finish the fight if you can't disengage for some reason. BJJ and wrestling have kept me safe with dangerous hombres. Also stay fit and think tactically. Avoiding danger is the best way to stay safe. Most people do not have time to be elite grapplers but they do have time to practice 36 techniques. For this reason, I rate Gracie Combatives pretty high for the average person.

i feel that Gjj is based around more traditional techniques, where Bjj is open to newer variations of techniques. Eddie bravo brought this up one time on how he was trying to show the gracies his effective style of jj to incorporate it into Gjj and he got push back from a lot of the gracie family because of it. they pretty much flat out refused to incorporate his style of jj into their style of gracie jj. This is one of the reasons why bravo started up his own jj called 10th planet jj.
@tjl4688
@tjl4688 3 жыл бұрын
Eddie's style of BJJ is sport-focused, hence the pushback from the Gracies. It's incredible for competition, but the moment people start trying to beat punch you, it falls apart like a lot of sport BJJ. The Gracies had already had enough fights to know whether Bravo's stuff had any merit in self-defense or the cage.

Carlson said it best, self defence is for defending against people who don't know jiujitsu, jiujitsu is for defending yourself against other jiujitsu fighters. You're just parroting Rickson and Royce. Rickson is a champion, but still made dubious claims, Royce never won a championship, but did well against guys who didn't know jiujitsu. Good jiujitsu is knowing how to defend yourself and cross training (something Royce disagrees with), if you can defend punches, manage distance, get the takedown and stay on top to finish, or reverse to get on top, you should be able to defend yourself on the street. Plenty of mma fighters have made bjj work , without being trained in gjj, because they train for the parameters. It Doesn't take much to know if you fight on the street, beat them standing or if you're close takedown and finish fast (most likely with strikes), but watch your back and if you're on your back sweep, or stand up... Muay thai and bjj will likely neutralise someone of the same rank in gjj.

where i live theres many bjj schools like every 3rd gym and only 1 gjj garage other side of the city which is a small room and just a few ppl practicing like a family looks like it from its fb page. from my research to me it looks like bjj is more like for young ppl for sport and the gjj for anybody and focused on selfdefense n controll. for me like over 40 old i have an impression in bjj schools i will just be choked out as many times kids can catch me and laugh on me but gjj offers a more serious system to get in there. i think both has gi and no gi... or bjj can be started at any age too? i would love to learn some judo too but i have the same fear, im already to old to bein slammed to the ground... am i right? pls correct me if im wrong

Your assumptions are all pretty much spot on. Judo is definitely harder on your body, but still useful for an older person to gain a greater sense of balance, leverage, and body control...so as to be able to avoid being thrown to the ground in the first place. Just gotta decide if you're willing to suffer those aches and brushes along the way. 😅

Maeda's Japanese friends Sataki, Shimitsu, Laku and Omori were also the fathers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, since GJJ came directory from Maeda->Carlos Gracie->... The whole world is talking about the 2 Gracie brothers as the real founders of BJJ. That is wrong, the Gracies were the founders of GJJ. Let us all never forget Luiz Franca (The same class where Carlos Gracie was a student of Maeda) and his student Oswaldo Fadda... Fadda continued Fraca's philosophy by teaching BJJ to the poor, instead of only the middle or upperclass of society. The Gracies were for the wealthy Rio's City Centre, while Franca worked in the favela's and the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. BJJ was created for all people from their fathers Maeda -> Sataki -> Omori, Franca-> Fadda. Never forget the root differences between BJJ en GJJ!! Osu!

@@MMALeech Sorry about the haziness, but you are also right. I just wanted to make people realise the 2 different root beginnings of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The only common share between BJJ and GJJ from day one was Maeda. It all started in Brazil from Maeda and his friends (who also made their separate trips to many other countries, Shimitsu and Laku were Japanese from Argentina and Peru, first enemies and later in Brazil they merged their Japanese grappling root knowledges) from the Kodokan base and were send out to spread Judo from Jigoro Kano. Kano himself created Judo which came from old school Japanese Jiujitsu he learned as a youngster. Maeda travelled many years to other places before he went for the second time to Brazil and settled and married. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from its roots is opensource. Maeda and his friends used the source code from Kano, opened it up, re-coded it and spread their new opensource code to their Brazilian students like Gracie and Franca..
