All people will experience sorrow when they give over to sin. This is especially true of sex addicts because of the stigma, shame and inevitable consequences attached to sexual sin. But the Bible tells us that there are two types of sorrow. A worldly sorrow which leads to death, and godly sorrow which leads to repentance and eternal life. How can a sex addict know which sorrow he is experiencing?
There are a number of key things to consider when asking this question. We can see a clear line between the focus and driving motivation behind the two, and it is very important that all those who desire freedom from sexual addiction be able to discern the difference.
In this installment of Ask the Counselor, Biblical Counselor Ken Larkin diligently walks us through the key differences between worldly sorrow and godly sorrow so that we might experience the genuine and life-changing sorrow of God.

This is good, it is exactly how I came to Christianity! I became worried about the consequences of my sins and went to much effort to rectify my sins. But I found no peace! The church is largely responsible for people like myself believing in this condition. When I went to church nobody talked about sin, only that our sins are all forgiven! The guilt I felt was from personal reading the bible. I never heard anyone confess their sins. I asked the minister if he would hear my confession, he did, but treated me as if it was not necessary. After confession, he just said, well, all all forgiven! I was expecting instruction or something, but there was nothing. People came but there was no change in any new convert even after baptism. I truly believe open confession is part of repentance, and instruction from a believing church in the way of righteousness, is the way! Sadly there is real opposition to open confession, but study David's repentance. You will see his reluctance to confess his sin caused God to be deaf to his pleas, until he was willing to confess Ps32. You could have spoken more on v11, the attributes of a godly repentance.

This is describing my current situation, its not sexual sin. But its selfish sorrow! Self loathing, self condemnation, self self self! Ive been praying Psalm 51 constantly for over a year, maybe my heart isnt in it i thought it was. But i think with time the goldy sorrow turned into earthly sorrow

If we confess your sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. It's God's job to convict us concerning sin. The fact that you are here asking for discernment means that Holy Spirit is working in you. Repent of your sins and ask God for Godly grief. Don't be discouraged and rely on the Lord our God

Repent and believe. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Look up substitutionary atonement. Remember what Jesus did for you and seek to understand it fully. Get a good grip on just how terrible your sin is and what it means to put it to death and be a new creation. Read your Bible everyday to know and understand God and his commandments so you can live them out and grow closer to Him. Pray the way Jesus tells us to pray to the Father. Seriously make Jesus your King and Lord over your life. He is your Master and “boss” now. You are his “slave/employee/friend/child” now. You don’t get to do what you want anymore because you owe your life to him. You do what he says because you love him and are grateful to him regardless of your feelings.

@@mamajo5867 I want Jesus to be more real than whatever I read or hear about him. I feel like I am just going through the motions. Like I am going through some checklist or some protocol. I don't hate my sin. I want to but I don't. I don't want to fake it until I make it either! I want to be hungry for the Bible, but I'm just not. I do regard iniquity in my heart, and I can't shake my pride. So that means not only does he not hear me, but he resists me. God resists the proud. Imagine a criminal resisting arrest; that's what God does with the proud- He is trying to get away from them/us. WOW. God actually resists the proud.

@@elsewherehouse so I know exactly what you’re going through. I’ve been going through it on and off a lot lately. There are a lot of different directions I can try to point you in to help. -your understanding of sin/hell in relation to God, how to fear God, and what exactly Jesus accomplished through substitutionary atonement -make sure you are getting good sleep(enough restorative hours each night/waking and going to bed at the same time everyday, avoiding blue light from electronics after sun down) when we don’t sleep well, our ability to feel properly in our hearts, pay attention to focus and listen, and our energy go down and you may or may not be able to notice. This highly effects our walks. - same with your diet. Make sure you eat enough food +balanced meals. They provides proper energy to your whole body and also effect our walk. - take care of your body by moving it through exercise everyday. This effects our bodies and our spiritual walk in the same way. If you are overwhelmed, exhausted emotionally or physically, or stressed, or depressed from life or avoiding daily responsibilities, these can effect your body and your spiritual walk as well. Address and fix them as much as you can. These are the most practical pointers you will get. If you are having trouble thinking and feeling the way you WANT, these will help big time. They help me drastically. And then when you feel better from doing these things, you will be able to go to the Bible and understand what you’re reading. When we don’t know 100% what’s wrong with our hearts or souls, or our relationship with God, we have to put all of our STRENGTH and MIND into figuring out what it is if we love God. Deny yourself, and discipline yourself as a disciple of Christ. Forget about caring about your feelings or lack thereof(as far as letting them get in the way of our relationship with God) our hearts are deceitful. Think about the things I told you earlier and think about them deeply. Meditate on them and ask yourself if you truly understand what these things even mean. (If you want eyes that truly see and ears that truly hear, you need to make sure you know how to truly listen and truly pay attention - look up how to listen and how to pay attention to figure out what you DONT know- get rid of that pride and replace it with confidence- admit you know nothing and go look all of these things up. Do hard research) If you think you understand anything well, you know nothing. 1 Cor 8:2 If there is even a hint of you not knowing you need to make SURE you know. Don’t lie to yourself into thinking you do understand if you don’t. That’s pride if you struggle with pride. I struggle there too. This will help. When you truly understand something, you will be able to admit you don’t know much. The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Seek Him with all of your heart and you will find Him.

@@mamajo5867 Mama, can i ask something about repentance? Repentance means to be sorry, to feel sorrow for your sins, after you find out how much you damaged your relationship with God, right? Does that mean repentance is something we must constantly do, or is it a one-time event?

What about an innocent child who feels sorrow (from childhood abuse and unhealed trauma) but is denied the right to express it. Until one day they become an adult, well, more like a walking vessel of overflowing unexpressed sorrows from a lifetime. There is no room for anything but sorrow and pain. Then, what is the sin of the child, back where the sorrow originated from? Is there sorrow without committing sin? It hurts if we feel filthy for having sorrow of this type?
@badzs.
@badzs. Жыл бұрын
Hey, I’m not the creator of the video, but if I may give my understanding if you would accept it. The innocent child in that story needs something called “born again” John 3. When we are born again all old things pass away, and we’re made NEW in the image of Christ. Old desires, old wounds, old desires. Pasted away. And become new. A new person, new desires, new ways to encourage one another. An innocent child has no control over what abuse happens to them, and unfortunately it’s the cause of a fallen world. But Thanks be to God for the SPIRIT of God. Who lives in us, and makes us anew in His sight. If you would want to read some of these chapters and verses it might clear up your questions. Colossians 1:21-23 1 Peter 2:9-11 2 Corinthians 5:17 ----------------- But listen, you are not condemned for feeling that sorrow. Just change it. You had no control over what happened to you as a kid. But you can control today, and who you will be today. Either a child, who had bad experiences, or a born again spirit filled Christian who’s brand new. May God bless you, and I hope this made sense.❤️

Can Sorrow begin as something worldly and develop as something Godly?
@PureLifeMinistries
@PureLifeMinistries 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I haven't given this a ton of thought, but I don't think so, because worldly sorrow and godly sorrow seem like they have different origins, different motivations, and different outcomes. However, if you have only experienced godly sorrow, I certainly believe that it is God's will to help you develop godly sorrow.
@Mindsetolympics

I disagree but I also think this perspective is expecting some unrealistic standards of not ever having Worldly sorrow mixed in with Godly. In our sin nature,which we will have until we leave this world, we will always think of ourselves first, will we not? Even if we consider others it can still lead to selfishness. We wrestle with our flesh daily. So its a bit unrealistic to act like we never can be self centered in our sorrow but evolve into Godly sorrow. Many times our sorrow can involve traits of both Godly and Worldly sorrow. Just ask God to help you walk through it because it’s for your betterment if you allow him to take the reigns and focus on his power!

I'm disappointed that dude chose to use sexual addiction as a basis of his arguement. How about you rephrase that to say, "addictions," in general. It isn't just about sex. Maybe he is trying to tell us of his problems. Not everyone is a sex addict.
