Missed a big one - buy used at your local brick-n-mortar!! I guess it depends on access to a good disc store, but most will have a used section. I've found some of my favorite discs this way, and I now make a point to sort through my local shop's used section for my favorite molds every time I go in. I've got a decent back up for all of my favorite molds in both new and used.

Yea, if I have a disc that I want to get a touch less stable, I'll leave it out in the sun for a week or two (this can change the color of the plastic and fade the stamp) but it definitely beats it in a touch. I especially do this with mvp molds which often have a higher degree of off-the-shelf over stability.

I actually think the mallet technique, or a hammer with cloth on the head, is just as realistic as any other. If you're residing in a house chances are there will be tools available. And not all houses have a smooth solid surface to throw a disc into. I only have a rough brick wall in the interior in my Baltimore rowhome.

I use a dryer on disc often, I ussually puy in several discs at once, no towels and runn the dryer for about 45 min on high. This makes MOST disc significantly more understable. I recently did this to a Fission Time Lapse and LOVE the results. This does NOT WORK well on soft Proton Plastic, I turned a MVP Vanish into the most stable disc I have ever held... I think it turned up the wing a bit. Great video, thanks!

"where did you get that stamp, the toilet store?" 🤣. good stuff. I have heard a number of these over the years and I have yet to actually try them, it is cool to see that some of them actually have merit! I am in the camp of "don't throw/rely on super beat in stuff" - I'd rather be able to off-the-shelf replace things when I can. that is easier said than done, though, I definitely have a ton of seasoned things in my bag that I will be heartbroken when the time comes. ironically enough, one of my favorites, is a super beat in zeus.

I jus had to do this exact thing. A week before a tournament, I lost my flippy-er Pharoah. Bought one in a slightly softer plastic and threw a few spike-hyzers on asphalt. It worked, and I used it for the tournament, but the edge was a lot more torn up and uncomfortable. Will try the dryer method with a more premium blend in the future.

Would be interesting to see the exact science behind the stability for hot / cold and the dryer / flex. Break it down on a molecular level and how the elasticity you're creating effects the stability. To me, you're taking a Star plastic and breaking down the bonds to resemble more of a G-Star plastic.

I tried adding some dome to it by placing it upside down over a pot of very hot water and putting a glass bottle on top of it. The dome was there, but unsurprisingly uneven and way too big, and it flew even worse then, so it has now become my on-the-wall disc. Lesson learned.

I find the temperature related methods super interesting. I guess they make sense since they are affecting the bond between the plastic particles, but I didn't expect them to cause as much change in flight compared to physical wear on the rim. Also, if I ever saw your tent set up at a tournament, I would totally stop by to say how much I appreciate your channel and how in depth your testing and comparisons are. I straight up get excited every time I see a new one of your vids pop up.

it makes sense you are changing the lip angle, heating it up and making it more malleable makes the edge of the disc droop, instantly cooling (flash cooling) after locks that droop in. yes it will spring back some which is why multiple times is needed, it's very similar to the dryer and bending you are doing the same thing.

I think it would be cool to have Caleb throw like 5 with each disc and then do some sort of maths to get an average value, since he's already out there. Would definitely be more conclusive for determining things, since spin rates, release angle and all that can vary so much with a human thrower. You can tell he naturally throw the beat ones higher expecting that turn as well

I'm a dryer guy hand over fist and since I leave my discs in my trunk 99% of the time, if they do get warped I automatically dryer them and then set them on the table. Usually. If I absolutely have to and there's a really bad warp I will actually lay it flight plate down. This is where there's some debate here, but I will put a bowl in the middle of it on while it's on a plate in order to match the dome that it otherwise would have

I disagree with the fundamental premise here that the outside edge of the rim is the primary factor for stability. I think it's actually the bottom edge of the rim. I came to this because I got some discs that had extra plastic at the mold release line around that bottom edge of the rim (Prodigy does this all the time), and they were super beefy. I variously ground (just rubbing on the tee pad or pavement) or shaved this edge off, and got em back to "normal" stability. Ground a bit more as a test and they went understable. I *think*, that normal discs beat in over time from sliding/skipping off the ground grinding down that bottom edge (rounding it off, or just making it thinner over all). Keep in mind, it's already well known that the distance from bottom edge to parting line is a strong indicator of stability (high parting line, overstable.. low parting line understable). Take a look at that bottom edge on the disc you ran over with the car. I'll bet it's squished down relative to a new disc. Also the hot/cold one might be melting that bottom edge slightly as it sits on a hot pan.
@daemn42
@daemn42 11 күн бұрын
Oh, and I also have some light weight (150-153 gram) G-Star (soft plastic) Bosses that I use only for forehand hyzer approach shots over trees so they pretty much *only* land on their outside edge, which is now seriously torn up. Yet they are every bit as stable as they were on day one, and I attribute this to the fact that bottom edge of the rim is still pristine.

A different dryer method that I heard was to throw disc in no heat and no other objects. The ridges in the dryer would work like trees. I have also heard of “tuning” the disc by taco bending it at 90 degree increments and that inverse taco style can increase stability. My guess is that tuning would be trying to alter wing height.

Do that once or twice then try it out.

I totally understand this perspective and I'm sure many of them do violate some rules. My biggest issue these days is that the PDGA knows full well that people do stuff like this, but there is no way to enforce it. How would a cardmate determine that I ran over my disc, instead of throwing it for 3 months? Does Paul McBeth make a disc illegal by angrily bending a disc after a missed putt? Some of the rules were clearly setup because of a single instance or issue/complaint and then just sit there, unenforceable.

@@SixSidedDiscs I'm still new and don't even have a PDGA number, so I'm completely unaware of this - is there anyone actually auditing bags or taking discs aside to see if they've been modified? I'm doubting this in the first place, and I'm also doubting that anyone is going to be able to take a look at a disc and see if it's been "illegally" modified unless it's something completely egregious, like someone cutting or gouging their disc with a knife with an obvious pattern. Though, it truly does make me wonder if some of the pros out there have their own "special recipes" for money discs. And, to be honest, even if they did - I'd be in favor of it just like I beat in my baseball glove back in the day. Also - I think there's a great video idea in here - What are the discs that -are- the perfect beat-in versions of discs that people love. What is the best out-of-box beat in Buzzz? (Streamline Echo?) What is the beat-in Teebird, Firebird, Destroyer, Envy, etc.,etc.?
