I'm a colonial, an Australian. My ancestors were sent down under here for the petty crime of stealing a loaf of bread. They endured sickness and cruelty on the trip by ship to get here, chained up in a dark constantly damp hull with little food or water. I want the British government to pay me reparations for generational trauma. I want a pretty card with the words written in it, 'SORRY' and hugs and kisses oxox. (Yeah. As an eg of debt already paid ... When Jamaica gained its independence the British wiped clean all their government debt, so the new republic could restart free of debt. It’s history. Any poverty now is down to Jamaica and financial mismanagement. Also, information can be found via google.

Slave owners were paid by the British to guarantee the freedom of the men and women they held and claimed possession of. If the payment was made directly to the slaves, they would have remained enslaved, then been further victimised. (robbed of the payment). Then, many British men then lost their lives at sea battling to save and free slaves from the many transport ships, which finally stamping out the trade. This fight for freedom left many British families fatherless, the price of freedom is not fair to anyone - but it was paid in full.

What about reparation for all the white people who didn't get jobs because minorities were prioritised over them for 'quotas'? The Thatcher/Major years were part of what was called "positive" discrimination, period. Positive means 'good,' right? This period saw white experienced workers losing job offers to anyone classed as a minority. Promotion boards within the civil service were held in which only minorities could apply and the standards were lowered specifically to enable them to pass. Where is the reparation for them? In the Thatcher/Major years again, astronomical amounts of funding and grants were given to minority areas under the 'Urban Programme' scheme. This funding was to be spent on minorities "only" and not the poorest white British areas. There was no real funding for white areas, 'nowhere even close to the funding for minorities.' Poor white working class areas and council estates had to rely on pitiful incentives from local governments in comparison to the minorities' massive central government funding. Where is their reparation for being overlooked?

Framing it as compensation to the slave owners is the problem. This country took on a multi-generational debt to PAY TO END slavery. The trans Atlantic slave trade only ended because Britain MADE IT HAPPEN!

I'm not British, so I am not sure I understand the details here. But if the government paid the slave owners off to be able to end slavery, then wasn't it British tax payers who paid out of their taxes for the ending of slavery? If money was taken out of citizens taxes to pay for this (until recently, she said), why is that not already considered reparations?

Anyone wishing to claim compensation for slavery can submit a claim detailing the dates and locations of their enslavement. Reparations will be paid accordingly.

Also, slavery in Britain itself was technically abolished on 25th March 1807 when an Act of Parliament was passed. It took longer to ensure the abolition in the coloies due to the simple fact that life was A LOT slower then. Also, Britain was the country that sought to end it in other countries by refusing to trade with those who still traded slaves. Two important points must be remembered: - Britain DID NOT start the slave trade of Africans. - Britain was the country that sought to END the trade. - Britain lost THOUSANDS of soldiers in the fights to try to free the slaves. - Africa and the middle east were the biggest traders of African slaves...one could argue that they still are.

I think this woman has forgotten that black people came to this country voluntary. Plus if any of the slaves on ships docked in this country managed to escape they were FREE as slavery was abolished in this country in the 13th century, up to that point if memory serves ? 15% of the English population were slaves, if they escaped and remained so for 1 year and 1 day they were FREE

I was brought up in East London in the 1970. Where i first lived was later condemned as slum housing. I went to state schools. I needed braces on my teeth aged 12 and finally was eligible for them aged 19 via the NHS. I lost my school milk as did many other children. I suffered from the education cut backs in the 80s. I left school at 16 and immediately paid tax and NI. I have done this throughout my life. I pay VAT. I pay council tax. I am taxed at a higher rate. Ive never qualified for any sort of benefit. The more i earn under PAYE the more tax i pay. I still cant get a GP appointment when i need one. I had to work through covid and not from home. No furlough for me. I still suffer NHS wait lists. I have to use public transport and the delays and discomfort that come from it. When i drive i sit in the same traffic jams as everyone else. If i drive in central london i have to pay the congestion charge. I was turned down for credit some years back due to family history and not having debt. My family some of which were irish were subject to routine prejudice and or jokes that are now deemed offensive. This will likely continue well into my old age. Someone please tell me where my privilege is and or where i can claim my reperations?

I do not see any reason for anyone paying reparations to people that have been dead for years, I am a senior citizen and have never owned slaves my parents and their parents also never owned slaves

The real irony is - and many people will not like hearing this, but that doesn't change the fact that it is 100% accurate - if there was no slavery, then the majority of black Americans would be living in Africa currently. Fact. So we can whine about inequality in America and the UK, but we'd be a hell of a lot worse off living in the DRC, or Nigeria, or Cameroon...and that's exactly where we would be if it wasn't for slavery. To be honest, if there were a chance that someone might write me a cheque for half a million quid for something that happened to my great-granddad I wouldn't argue. But if I had to argue for it I'd find it impossible to find any rationality!
