Actually it's not about being gay, John (the bassist) wrote this one and it's about his personal problems. Roger's girlfriend had the idea for the whole band to dress up as women, doing a parody of "coronation street" (a British tv show). Then obviously this took on another meaning because of Freddie's sexuality.

It's an easy mistake to make in hindsight, but yeah, if you're like me and are a massive Queen fanatic, you can kind of tell when something is written primarily by Freddie because he wrote almost all his songs on piano rather than guitar, so they'll often have that as a focal point; Brian's naturally are more guitar oriented; whereas John, the bass player who wrote this, Another One Bites the Dust and You're My Best Friend, tends to write the ones with the most developed rhythm section.

@@MundoDragon- Agree! Not only did Roger Taylor and Benjamin Orr have a definite facial resemblance, especially when both had similar haircuts/hairstyles, there were times when they dressed similarly, too, although that was outfit components, not matching outfits, thank goodness! For example, each had at least 2 or 3 shirts almost identical to the other’s. Offhand, I can recall a pair of pants, and a leather jacket, too. I think it’s almost always a she thing, not a he thing, to notice that! Oddly, it’s photos of Benjamin that look like possibly of Roger to me, usually not vice versa.

This video has a few concepts. The dancers are from the Royal British Ballet, they are performing a ballet called The Afternoon Of The Faun. And the scenes with the lights were Queen showing support for a mining strike at the time. The song is about John Deacon wanting to break away from touring so much, he wanted to spent more time with his family, he was a family man. You guys have to check out I Want It All from Queen, you will recognise the song.

Queen bass player John Deacon wrote this from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement. This song became an anthem for the ANC in South Africa in the late '80s when Nelson Mandela was still in jail and the white government's apartheid policies were still in place. The video for this song parodies a popular British television soap, Coronation Street. The opening sequence features all the band members in drag (Mercury as a housewife, Deacon as grandmother, Taylor as a schoolgirl, and May as a housewife). This confused many people who didn't catch the reference. Brian May was asked in an interview with Q magazine March 2011 whether each band member's character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities? He replied: "Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie's idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger's girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women

Absolutely zero do do with Freddie's sexuality. The song was in fact written by bassist John Deacon and the whole dressing up idea came from Roger Taylor's partner. As for the dancers, they were members of the Royal Ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan.

It's just about someone in a suffocating relationship. When this came out the sight of Freddie in a miniskirt doing the vacuuming made me want to tear my eyes out :) He had a unique sense of humour. And he'd basically screw anything of either gender that stayed still long enough.

The British have known for centuries that men dressing as women, or caricatures of women, is inherently funny - it's a stock feature of pantomime and music hall. Drag at the time, particularly among comedians, was not something exclusive to the gay community in the UK, Fred's orientation notwithstanding, and so it was a lot easier to get away with over here than in America. You could almost say it was so overt it's covert.

Freddie was not dressed as a cow. The pose and costume were an homage to Nijinsky's interpretation of "Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun" which caused a near riot in early 20th century France due to the flesh tones of the costume and the dancer's erotic movements.

Those "artistic" dancers were from the Royal Ballet Company. Freddy loved the arts. Ha. As other comments said, this video killed Queen in the USA for many years. This video was banned from MTV and other TV shows, in 1984. The Bible Belt got Queen banned from radio play, all because they saw this video as being disgusting. Men dressing in Drag as women. LOL. The Brits do this all the time for Stage, TV, Films and videos. It is considered "normal" artistic behaviour. So for years Queen turned their back on the US and concentrated on South America and developed their "Arena" shows. Massive shows playing mainly in the huge Football Stadiums (Soccer) around the world. Plus huge outdoor shows that attracted 2-300,000 people. By the time Live Aid came around in 1985 they had honed their arena presentation to a knife edge. Cheers.

The most hilarious thing about this video is that it was no issue at all in the UK where we had a history of Drag but in the US at the time it was the focus of massively homophobic Conservative campaign of people burning all their Queen albums in disgust. How's that for old school cancel culture. It had a big impact on American Queen sales at the time.

As others have said, this had nothing to do with Freddie or his sexuality. He never officially came out during his lifetime. He was a private person off stage and didn't want to be a poster boy for gay causes. Don't feel bad though. Almost all the reactors assume the same thing even though I don't know why people automatically think gay = dressing up as women. lol

Unfortunately MTV and vh1 banned playing this video and you never saw much Queen played on them after that, which is ironic since the Bohemian Rhapsody video was made to be watched as well as listened to 6 years before there even was an MTV or vh1. Queen was always ahead of its time! We didn't have any other channels to go to to watch our favorite bands. Buying their albums, cassettes and cds and waiting hours for it to be played on the radio was all we had. So we waited in long lines over night for concert tickets to go on sale and we had so much fun. I'm so happy to have KZfaq so I can watch some videos I had never seen before, watching whatever I want whenever I want to. Other than Live Aid I had never seen their live videos, which in my opinion are some of their best versions of my favorite songs.

John Deacon (bass) wrote "I want to break free"... he was a very quiet, shy member of the band. Queen decided to make the video emulating female characters in a British TV show back in 1984 as a gag... I'm pretty sure the ballet scene was Freddie's idea - he was a big fan of that art. And it was spandex, not nudity when doing the ballet scenes... it just made it easier to move and provocative visually... Unfortunately, MTV America banned the video in 1984 because of the 'suggestive' drag video (but they still aired Ratt's video for 'Round & round ' which had actor Milton Berle in drag. Oh the hypocrisy!) and did not promote Queen in North America in the Reagan era where the AIDS epidemic was blamed on the LGBTQ population. Thus, the album 'The Works' was a commercial failure... Queen decided not to tour the US & Canada cos the record was a huge hit worldwide.

There's a fantastic documentary about the Ballet Russes who stormed Paris in 1909. "L'aprea midi d'un faun" a Debussy composition made into a ballet featuring the dancer Vasilav Nijinsky was about as controversial as you could get when it opened and this is what Freddie and the boys are giving a nod to here. Diaghilev's next production "The Rights of Spring", set to the music of Stravinsky, caused a riot. They definitely broke free.

Hi there The song is known for the band dressed in drag as a concept by drummer Roger Taylor, which parodied the British soap opera 'Coronation Street'. The second part of the video is a composition performed with the Royal Ballet whereas the parody of cross-dressing acclaimed in the UK is a popular trope in British comedy and you see it in shows eg: "The Life of Brian" - "The Benny Hill Show" etc (remember it is 1984). As most people presumed that it was about his sexual orientation but it's the furthest from the truth - Freddie was out but not public - As Elton John said "Nobody I have every met including myself have been so openly outrageous and sexually active with the wildest sex parties on earth" Freddie poor Fredo - or he's birth name being Farsi (Persian are Iranian) is Farrokh was an extraordinary male vocalist with a wide range of 4 Octaves???? may I remind you Mariah Carey has 5 and the maximum a human has is 10

It is true that John Deacon wrote this song and it was Roger Taylor's idea to do a spoof on a British soap opera. Freddie was asked about this and said it is not my song or idea to do this. He said about the other band members: They ran into their frocks fast enough.

The human body can take a lot of work and everyone is unique. That unique individuality is truly art. Clothing hides the reality that is typically hidden from others while the raw human form, physically or emotionally, is too often hidden away. Breaking free is literally about no longer hiding your true "naked" vulnerable human form.

That movie TOTALLY "straightwashed" Freddie's life! GARBAGE!

“Straightwashing (also called hetwashing) is portraying LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) or otherwise queer characters in fiction as heterosexual (straight), making LGB people appear heterosexual, or altering information about historical figures to make their representation comply with heteronormativity.” The movie absolutely did *not* do this.

Freddie I love you so much, for who you were and I know you struggled with your sexuality, because in those times being gay wasn't as accepted as it is today. I wish you could live in today's world. You could have lived free, as you are. Amazing, talented, sexy, and gay. Your music will never die. It is timeless. RIP Freddie, you have a lot of people who still love you. I just wish you had acceptance when you were alive. I cried the day you died. I felt like I'd lost a part of my soul. In my heart, you live on. ❤😢

The "cross-dressing" is just the members of Queen dressing up as their favourite characters from the British soap opera "Coronation Street".

The illuminated gadget at the beginning is a Goblin Teasmade, which woke you up with a hot drink. I have one, probably still usable, among our mountains of junk! The look is very 1960s Coronation Street, but John's grumpy Granny looks like a character in Giles's daily newspaper cartoons, which also inspired the Hell's Grannies sketch in Monty Python's Flying Circus. Roger's schoolgirl is also more reminiscent of a Giles character than anyone in "Corrie". The lines "I want to break free from your lies. You're so self-satisfied, I don't need you" in connection with the miners (so "Metropolis"!) could be taken in this case to refer to the militant union leaders and Tory politicians who prolonged the bitter 1984 strike, which lasted a year and gained the miners nothing. The British coalmining industry collapsed soon afterwards.

So you decided to search for this song after hearing it at the store? That's friggin' awesome! I can't wait to see your reaction to The Show Must Go On. Freddie's vocals are in top form. There's also Innuendo, which demonstrates how he juxtaposed notes few others are capable of doing.

This song was actually not written by Freddie but by the bass player John Deacon (who also wrote Another One Bites the Dust and You’re My Best Friend). I remember controversy about this video when it came out in the 80’s due to the dressing in drag.

Sentinel Mortgage Corp. I don't think that happened in The UK. This video was played a lot and I don't remember it being seen as something outrageous. I am surprised that now, so many years later, young people are closer to the Victorian mentality than we were back in the sixties, seventies, eighties...

@@p.millard557 Right - I know this was a massive hit in the UK. But MTV over here in the states had an issue with it and I think (hard to remember details that far back lol) that they wouldn’t show it at first and then eventually only did it later at night. I’m sure that contributed to it not being as big a song here as over there. And come to think of it, I think Queen was pissed about it and that’s why they didn’t include the US in their big 1986 tour. I was/am a big fan so I watched this vid whenever it did come on back then but I remember Radio Gaga got more like play on MTV for sure.
