Welcome to our new series in which a classical composer, Sean William Calhoun, breaks down some of his favorite musical moments in Kpop.
Ep. 6 breaks down what's going on with the form of Red Velvet's Zimzalabim, composed by Hayley Aitken, Daniel Caesar, Ludwig Lindell, and Olof Lindskog

So basically Zimzalabim’s lyrics talk about not giving up on your dreams, and at the same time the song’s structure “rewards” you with a complete chorus at the end. You didn’t give up on the song and kept going with it as it was building up for that final part. “if you don’t give up great things will happen” so the musical structure matches the lyrics.... lol what am i saying? 🤣

Since its a festival, Zimzalabim is actually just the intro to it that's why it doesn't sound all "summer-y" like Red Flavor and Power Up. Day 2 is supposed to be, as you said, "the drop" and Day 3 will be the outro so it'll probably be more on the velvet side. Also, remember the elevator in Zimzalabim MV? When you listen to LP, the last song on Day 1, it kinda sounds like elevator music. In the end, an elevator ding is heard because the elevator has landed, signaling the end of Day 1 and the start of Day 2.

I also feel like this is a spiritual successor of IGAB. The main difference is that IGAB uses tempo fluctuations and ZZB's tempo stays the same. There are obviously many differences between the two, but that's the one that stands out to me the most.

Wow, this explains so much. Honestly, the outro to Zimzalabim is perhaps my favorite part of the entire song and I couldn't put my finger on quite why other than bc it's hype. But yeah, this makes so much sense. It feels like such a needed resolution after what feels like an entire song spent building up to something. Whoa. Sean, you snapped.

Used to listen to minimal techno where there was never any build up but more a slow bubbling pressure cooker of energy that felt like it was about to burst but never quite getting to that point. Always looking for music that experiments these days, the normal song structure you laid out in the beginning is fine for a majority of music but it really irks me when I know everything that's gonna happen beforehand. Happy when I hear groups and genres trying different stuff, it's a breath of fresh air in music.

In case you haven't heard it, LOONA's song Butterfly is worth checking out. It's more conventional than Zimzalabim, but I think it also does a slowly-building energy well. And (G)I-DLE's song Put It Straight eschews the bridge and final chorus entirely in favor of a brief return to the first verse. (And those are still Kpop. This will be a very long discussion if we try to cover non-pop genres.)

I've been looking for this kind of contents for so long because when I find a song somewhat different from other songs but can't explain why, I wish someone would educate me on what's special about the composition/structure of a song without being too difficult. Oh yeah, I like Polygon. I've slipped BDG references into one or two past CCBDtKs, but wanted to make reference to other members of Polygon as well, because a few of them are models for this. Yes, BDG is obviously an influence on some of the humor (e.g. the dance break), but I think the general approach to CCBDtK is much closer to Simone's Games Feel Good series than BDG's Unraveled, and my delivery on camera probably tends to be closer to Pat's more deadpan style than BDG's more theatrical one (certain moments notwithstanding) so like...I know BDG references are the most recognizable, but Polygon broadly (along with some other KZfaqrs) are an influence.
@SuperRookie
@SuperRookie 5 жыл бұрын
@@SWCcomposer I definitely felt the Pat influence in there, and also some of BDG's fun moments/editing too! I haven't seen Simone's but will do so now, it sounds like more fun content, thank you for letting me know of it! And also just another general thank you for the content Red Velvet deserves
@SWCcomposer
@SWCcomposer 5 жыл бұрын
@@SuperRookie Looks like they may have renamed those (and merged the series with some of Pat's videos) "Game Mechanics Explained" (they were "Games Feel Good" when I watched). But this is a good example - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNaiYKh2l6_SYYE.html - I've seen just a little gameplay of this game, but I'm not particularly familiar with it, nor do I know game design/animation. But this video goes enough in depth to actually give some understanding that wouldn't be obvious to someone like me (even if I had played the game), which could be applied to looking at animation in other games, and which introduces one or two relevant terms, without getting bogged down in animation jargon or minutiae (which is important for actual animators to know, but would slow down a video for general audiences). And that's very similar to what I'm trying to do with music in CCBDtK.

In my opinion, After 1st Zimzalabim, Joy still sing the Verse before Wendy's prechorus, after that back to the Verse which is a Rap parts and then prechorus again.. So my analyzes is, after 1st Chorus there's a Verse ( even it's just 2 lines but still it's sounds like verse) and then prechorus.. the song form would be: Intro》Verse 1》Prechorus 1》Zimzalabim》 *VERSE 2* 》Prechorus 2》Verse 2 (part2)》Prechorus 2 part 2》Zimzalabim 2》Dance Break》Bridge》Zimzalabim 3》Outro hope you guys notice this comment and talk about it again.. You should review f(x)’s Red Light. Such a cool and interesting song.
@SWCcomposer
@SWCcomposer 5 жыл бұрын
That's coming...but having a proper Red Light video is one of the long goals of this series. At this point, a lot of videos are laying out foundations, so they all stand alone fairly well. As they go on, there will be more referencing back, which will open up covering topics that go deeper than I could in one video (without it being really long). For instance, I won't explain basic pop song form again in detail in another video - I'll just say "if you're not familiar with pop song form, watch Ep. 6 of this series" and move on assuming everyone either already knew it or have watched this so they're up to speed. And that's the beginning of one of the legs necessary for understanding Red Light. The understanding of intervals (which I discussed in Ep. 4) is the beginning of another leg. There'll need to be a video on diatonic modes first (I have a concept for that one, but I don't know when I'll fully make it) and possibly one on how f(x) developed pop song form outside of Red Light before I can actually make a concise video on Red Light itself. So that video probably won't happen for months (because I'll also be making videos on new songs as they come out, so I won't be purely focussing on setting up the Red Light video).
