The best glide speed in a Cessna 172 is typically given as 65 knots indicated, which gives you a glide ratio of 9 to 1. Let's see exactly what that gets us when we do an engine out glide over the Chesapeake Bay, and how gliding 10 knots faster or slower effects this.

My 1976 Piper Lance glided about 10 miles from 10,000 feet. I believe a Piper Saratoga glides about 17 miles and Malibu 23 miles from that altitude. If I'm flying night VFR or light IFR I'll fly higher than normal to give myself a longer gliding distance (To my emergency landing airport) if I were to lose and engine.

On the 55IAS glide around the 3:35 mark of the video, what would happen if you pushed the nose hard down at around 350 feet, gained airspeed and got into ground effect? Would you have enough energy to get to the runway?

I think that's what they meant when he says at 3:45, that it would have been better to pitch down to 65 at a little earlier

And us skydivers get about 2:1 for average 1:1 wing loading ( sq. ft. of wing divided by total weight).

If the engine is providing some power leave it running. If not first step is to pull the nose up to get the prop stopped. Windmilling prop is a very large airbrake. With it stopped makes a significant difference. Cessna should provide the data in the POH.

Should be somewhere between Vx and Vy so probably around 97 knots, poh don’t give best glide speed due to the unlikely event of both engines quitting, I believe

Hi, I’m a private pilot - starting at ATP under Frontier Airlines program in September. I saw few figures for Cessnas that stated for every 1000 feet of alt lost - you can glide 1.5nm. Is this incorrect? I brought it up during my checkride with a DPE and he was pretty happy to see I knew that information. However, it looks like your POH and the figures for my cessna when it comes to glide distance are different. Is this typically the case?

So I actually just checked out my 172sp POH and I couldn't find the chart used in the video. I did however find it on an FAA doc called "Best Glide Speed and Distance" and it does have the same chart. The doc says "A rule of thumb for Cessna 152s and 172s is 1.5 nautical miles per 1,000 feet of altitude above ground level." I believe the 1.5nm claim is based on an average glide ratio at different altitudes where air density starts to decrease as you go higher up. It could also be that the specific airframes for different Cessnas also just have varying glide ratios

The chart shown in the video has the same figures as you are quoting. In his example at 2000 ft he was able to glide 3 nm, which is the same as 1.5 nm per 1000 ft. The POH for the Cessna 172S I fly has the same chart and I expect it's likely the same for all 172s, although other models probably have different glide ratios. You should consult the POH for your aircraft to find the most accurate info.

For the 172SP, the figure is shown on POH page 3-14. The best glide speed is 68 KIAS and glide ratio is 9:1. With a glide ratio of 9:1, the airplane can glide 9,000 ft for every 1,000 ft of altitude. Since 9,000 ft is equivalent to 1.5nm, you are correct.

It always disappoints me when these kinds of conversations don't include the ideas of calculating your best glide speed based on the weight of the aircraft and using "Speed-To-Fly", like glider pilots do. I'm confident that using the correct glide speed, and adding half of a head wind or subtracting 1/3 of a tailwind from that speed, would get you the furthest distance possible in a real-world situation.
