VO2 Max is only PART of Constitution - it also includes your resistance to disease and chemicals, and ability to withstand injury. You cannot estimate Con from a SINGLE test because of how much it actually covers. Someone who can easily do an Iron Man Marathon, but gets sick every couple of weeks and can't hold his liquor, would NOT have a 20 Con.
@Engineer_Hall
@Engineer_Hall 2 жыл бұрын
Using a standard bell curve with 10 as the average; being in the upper 75% would put you between 12 & 13 CON. This would more accurate since very few people would have numbers on the higher and lower ends.
@gudmundur-heimisson
@gudmundur-heimisson 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve also seen claims that the ability score modifier is meant to represent how many standard deviations a character is away from the mean in that stat (assuming the stats are all normally distributed), ie., the z-score. The z-score of the 75th percentile is 0.67 which I would argue corresponds to a score of 11.
@Engineer_Hall
@Engineer_Hall 2 жыл бұрын
Redoing my numbers; it looks like it would be between 11 and 12. I think I remember reading in one of the books that someone with a score of 20 in any ability is considered super human. Thus the bell curve I used to estimate
@gudmundur-heimisson
@gudmundur-heimisson 2 жыл бұрын
@@Engineer_Hall yeah personally I don’t really agree with the score modifier as z-score interpretation but just thought I’d throw it in there since it’s something I’ve seen discussed, and it would provide a way for experiments like in the video to attempt to translate real life statistics into dnd (which I’m always a fan of). As a side note and to illustrate why I think using it as a z score is limiting here’s what the percentiles would be for each score rounded to the nearest percentile: Ability score (z score): percentile ---- 10(0): 50% 11(0.5): 69% (nice) 12(1): 84% 13(1.5): 93% 14(2): 98% 15(2.5): 99% 16(3): 100% 17(3.5): 100% 18(4): 100% 19(4.5): 100% 20(5): 100%

While this is probably mathematically sounds, I find it's a little bit boring. I'd think that 20 would be simply double the strength of the average. So like the body builders would probably have a 20 in strength. That's just my opinion on it however I do understand how it's probably less real.

That you are in the 75th percentile does not mean your CON scor is 75% of 20 =15 This would only be the case, if an equal number of people had a 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., 19, 20 CON score. A normal distribution is far more likely with such things. Depending on how exactly distrbution looks you are more like a 12 in my opinion.
@anthonynorman7545
@anthonynorman7545 2 жыл бұрын
12 seems low. 10 would be the median of a normal curve. 1standard deviation is 34.13 % so he's past the halfway point at 75 percentile and there's only really 3 STDs on a normal curve, so he's probably closer to 14 than 12

@@anthonynorman7545 It depends on how big you think a standard deviation is in the ability score system so there’s no real “correct” answer. So if a standard deviation is +/-1 modifier (+2 score) then a z-score of +0.67 corresponds to an ability score of +1.34 (just multiply by two) but if you decide that a standard deviation is +/-3 ability score then that same z-score gives you +2. It just depends on how wide you think the distribution is basically so you can justify almost any score by just deciding that the standard deviation is larger or smaller.

@@BobWorldBuilder Maintaining a walking pace for most of a day shouldn't be as difficult as you think, if you're not out of shape; it's almost literally what the human body was designed to do. Also, remember that the 8 hours in the PHB doesn't include the assumed breaks for eating and rest. Basically, it doesn't mean walking 24 miles between 8AM and 4PM; it means covering 24 miles with 8 hours of walking within the 16 hours you're assumed to be awake on an average day.
@misterdayne2792
@misterdayne2792 2 жыл бұрын
The walking experiment should be fairly doable. 24 miles is around 38 kilometres, and people walk on average 5 km/h, meaning that experiment should take you around 7 hours and 40 minutes or so. But then again, that's without stopping. 20 minute break on the halfway wouldn't be out of the question, and all kinds of adventurers should be able to do it: from the apollo-body fighter to the Devito-shaped wizard. Everyone should in theory be capable.

You can also hold your breath much longer than you think you can. If you can make it through the struggle point (where your body is in panic mode to find oxygen) you have reserves left over that can last minutes. Bob, the other way of determining your CON is to investigate your HP bonus. For example, if an average STR person has to hit you three times with a club before you fall over and Grace insists on calling for an ambulance, your CON estimate of 15 would be justified as an upper limit. **picks up club** Now stand still. I once walked 20 miles to help a friend with a boy scout badge. It took us about 7 hours and we were HURTING by the end, AND I WAS A CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER AT THE TIME. I ran half-marathons for fun and walking 20 miles almost wiped me out. It's weird. Anyway, all that to say, be careful, wear good shoes, and for the love of God hydrate and take a break when needed.

Just watching people hold their breath this long gives me the heeby jeebies... Also, it generally takes a good bit of training to be able to walk 20+ miles a day. Particularly while carrying a 50pound pack. I could do it at one point in my life, but not now...

Oh, hey! 5e uses constitution for CHASE MECHANICS. Effectively, chase mechanics activate when everyone is using the dash action. You can continously use the dash action a number of times equal to your con score before having to make saves to keep dashing. Dash action doubles movement speed, default movement is 30ft. Meaning, for every 60ft or so you can sprint before starting to get winded is another point to your CON modifier. Now I've done the same speed tests you guys did; I can run a bit faster than most people, but I cant run very far. On top of that, I can guarantee there are faster people out there; I likely have the fast movement feature from the Barbarian class. 35x2=70. I can rsprint about 100 feet before I start to struggle, but if I keep going until I keel over, I can get to about 200 feet. Ergo, I have a CON Modifier of about 1 or 2.

Constitution is a measure of more than just holding breath, running endurance, or Vo2Max. It also determines resistance to disease, toxins, the elements, among other things. These things, of course, are much more difficult to quantify (safety first).

I saw a video which had a tratidional culture diving fisherman, and I noticed he was hyperventilating before he dove, so I tried it along with him. I oxygen-saturated my blood and blew out carbon dioxide (too much CO^2 is what makes you feel the need to breathe, not a lack of O^2 per se). I started holding my breath when he went under and did so until he surfaced, a little over 2 minutes later. I'm not athletic, but by passing a couple lore checks, I knew how to give mysrlf an advantage to beat the DC by alternate means.

The VO2Max based interpretations of CON are more like Endurance tests, and CON is functionally used more as 'how much punishment before die' rather then 'how much action before exhasted' in most D&D. These really are two very different things that are not related in a person physiology. Womens bodies consistently withstand more punishment then mens in situations of deprivation such as hunger, hypothermia etc but this won't be reflected in endurace tests as endurance is just a byproduct of ahtletic conditioning and will coincide with STR scores.

As a 5k race director for a race full of gamers (it's at Gen Con), I have often considered how to give some kind of nerdy award representing constitution scores, but I wanted some way that wouldn't feel off-putting for back-of-the-pack or walkers. I haven't been able to decide on anything still. As a marathoner and triathlete, I am also amused by theory-crafting regarding endurance athletics in PnP RPG's. I have had a few nice productive talks with various RPG writers over the years about how to best model endurance athletics in their game, and nothing is ever quite right.

You can easily calculate your Con if you know your level, your class and how many hitpoints you have. Just make sure you have a healing potion ready when you test this, to avoid throwing death saves

I really enjoy all the attempts for Constitution and wisdom and charisma metrics for real-world applications; however, Constitution also covers things like the ability to recover from illness or poisons and no matter how much oxygen you have coming into you I don't believe that affects your ability to mitigate the damage from poison.
@spencerbryan226
@spencerbryan226 2 жыл бұрын
Constitution also works for drinking, ability to resist poisoning, and other things requiring endurance. It is not a perfect system, but suspension of disbelief is critical when sky squid people eat brains and even a rat can kill a standard human with relative ease

I don't think percentile translates to ability score directly like that. Since percentile measures the percentage of the population who are better/worse, not the relative ability. The best person might be 5 times as good as the second best. I think you'd have to take the 50 percentile, call that 10, then calculate the best person in the world, and call that 20, and then rate yourself for where you fall in-between
