The differences between a falsely empowered codependent and a narcissist are awareness, addiction, and consistency. One is predominantly addicted. The other is rarely addicted.
We have a very skewed reality about what addiction is. So most people are labeling someone who is a falsely empowered codependent as a narcissist, yet they have all of these addictions present.

Falsely empowered codependents usually have some sort of addiction Alcohol drugs sex gambling etc That means that their subconscious mind is aware on some level of their own trauma because they are trying to suppress it A true narcissist - someone with NPD has ZERO awareness. They usually don’t have an addiction because they don’t have anything to cover up (at least they believe)

He could do a bit better breaking it down because the info is not clear. I can tell his intent is good and he wants to help us. I also cannot understand. I think he may be saying that if someone is aware of thier addiction, they have self awareness which many narcissists lack. I also gleaned that most people don't know what addiction is (we can be addicted to people for instance AKA trauma bonded). TV, games, etc. Edit: yeah. Nvm. I don't know what he means. Sorry.

@Hyperion Solomon just got notification of your reply & see date you responded to my question was 2 weeks ago. Thank you for attempt to clarify (for me & others). I'll have to rewatch this vid & add info you provided; I think it'll make more sense; if not, then, well, yeah, Kenny usually does a great job concisely getting to the point but something must be amiss if a 2nd attempt to hear fails. Hope life's treating you well today. Mine just began.

He’s saying people w addictions are more likely “co dependent,” bc they’re AWARE of their horrible behaviors (self aware) and soothing their angst w the addictions.

I think what he’s trying to say is a narcissist isn’t addicted to drugs, alcohol, eating too much or not enough, or other means of escaping reality because a narcissist lives in fantasy 24/7? Because if someone has (for example) an alcohol addiction, they are partly addicted because they are trying to escape a harsh truth or reality. Where as a narcissist convinces themself that their false truth/ fantasy is what everyone else believes and does whatever they possibly can to uphold it including running away and starting over with other people…? I hope that helps.

Kenny, can you share some real life examples that show the difference between these two, as I still have a hard time distinguishing between the two?

A true narc has ZERO awareness. Even subconsciously. So addictions generally aren’t present. Someone with an addiction is codependent They might mask their pain with alcohol or food (overweight people have emotional trauma) etc Obviously this is fluid but in my opinion a true narc won’t have an addiction because they don’t believe even subconsciously there is something wrong with them That’s why it’s hard to diagnose. They don’t go to therapy unless dragged there and even then the therapist will side with them because damn they are good.
