When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was going to be a video on how to not bring everything you own to a session (guilty) and instead have one or two bits that are super versatile. Happy its not though because this is ridiculously cool haha! I'm also happy I'm not the only one who brings 3+ kits to a session and then ends up just using pretty much the same gear the whole time haha!

I can so relate to this. Just last weekend, my friend texted me "hey, can you help me record a demo?" and instead of even TRYING to figure out more about what I was getting myself into, I filled a U-Haul truck with 10 drum kits, 17 snares, 5 bags of cymbals, 2 trap cases full of maracas and tambourines and shit, 75 bass drum beaters, a xylophone, 2 marimbas, 3 sets of rototoms, and an assortment of ceremonial gongs from the Ming and Yuan dynasties. You never know, right? Man, it's tough being a "pro drummer".
@JakeReedmusic

I know it seems silly, but not having the right sounds can totally derail a session, especially a film date like this. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into, which is why I brought all of the drums that could have been an option, as I explained at the beginning of this video (i.e. I didn't bring a little bebop kit or an 80s Yamaha RC). Before the session, the composer, engineer, and I auditioned all of the drums and they ended up liking the Camco's most, which was the kit I already had set-up under the mics ... so yes, a lucky but educated guess based on doing tons of sessions like this for 15 years. And yes, sometimes they do ask for a shaker overdub and want to hear 10 different shaker options! It happens! We did 11 "song-length" cues in a 6 hour session and an hour of it was just for guitar overdubs, so we had to find the right sound fast and get "the take" fast. So, yeah ... it is tough being a "pro drummer," but it's fun. (PS - You should see the amount of stuff all of the percussionists take to a film session!)

Would love more videos like this where possible! Super interesting to see and hear, particularly cause i was in the studio last week with my band and our setup wasn’t nearly as in depth in terms of how much stuff we all brought with us to record - i’m on bass but your videos have been helpful for me with my bass writing and finding more ways to play off the drum parts whether that’s rhythmically or tonally :) Edit: the drums sound killer here too, even with the iphone clip towards the end! Really inspiring to hear and try out different sonic directions with the drum tones!

Living in NYC I used to only bring my cymbals a stick bag with all my sticks cow bell mallets brushes and two snare drums most of the studios wanted you to used their snare I herd that in the 70s and 80th on the west coast drummers sent two sets ahead of them but I never played or recorded in California

Honestly most studios I have worked in have a great house drum kit (if not 3+) so bringing multiple snares, cymbals, and kick pedal beaters is tantamount to getting “your sound” more than bringing any toms or a kick.

I have the same deeper hammered bronze Ludwig snare, originally with tube lugs. But only after switching to the same setup as you have happen to have on yours (imperial lugs, no gaskets), was I truly content with the sound of the drum. I have it tuned as a fat snare as well as you have here, I feel it likes to live down at that tuning. Anyway sorry, not a video about insignificant details of a single snare drum that appeared in it. Great video along with all the other stuff you post. Thanks!
@JakeReedmusic

Such a great drum, but yes, I have heard that the imperial lugs are the way! And yes, it loves to sit low and gushy but still has a brightness to it that sometimes is lost with a low tuned wood drum.

A question about your yellow satin flame Gretsch at 1:58 . What do you like about no resos? I played an old Mapex for decades and as parts broke I got used to no reso heads and began to develop concert drum techniques. I ended up buying a 2013 Gretsch USA Custom Bop kit (peacock satin flame, not that anyone asked, lol 🦚). While it sounds absolutely amazing with more articulation, resonance, and sustain than my beater kit... It almost feels too controlled. Curious as to your reasons and thoughts.
