I’m right in the middle of this just went from the kuiu icon pro7200 pack with a heavy oversized sleep system I switched to the exo k4 5k which I’m absolutely in love with I spent weeks researching and comparing packs it was down to that and the new kifaru ark with absaroka bag. The exo fits what I’m looking for in a pack it’s very simple, clean, and laid out almost exactly how I would design a bag. After all that I realized space was limited compared to the 7200 I went to sportsmen’s and bought a eureka one man tent on sale for $77 around 3 lbs packs pretty small, went with a light Nemo 15 degree bag. Now I’m able to fit my gear in the smaller bag which I really like. I’m forcing myself to get smaller and lighter which might cost more but to me is worth it my pack is now running around 40lbs compared to the 50+ I was running before I will also mention this EXO Carry’s the weight much better.

The thing that’s made the most difference for me is to not leave any dead space in the pack wasted/unused. I hunt around a plethora of good water sources. So I’ll use my Nalgene bottle to pack anything and everything I can fit in it on the initial hike in to setup a base camp. The other thing I do, is I don’t use any of the stuff sacks that came with any of my gear. Sleeping bag just gets packed into my backpack. It helps the sleeping bag conform to the inside of my backpack and actually takes up less real estate in my pack. Same goes for any bulkier items. Most packs have a good compression strap system. So if you just load your pack as if it were a “stuff sack/compression sack” and then reef on all the external compression straps once it’s fully loaded, you can actually go out for a relatively long hunt and do it with a relatively small pack. MR Metcalf is my be all end all pack. From 1-2 day scouting trips to 7-10 day hunts and packing a Muley out at the end. Good Video. I enjoy getting to hear other hunters methods they utilize. When we stop learning and taking in information we lose the ability to grow.

So awesome! Thanks for chiming in. I too pack my sleeping bag/quilt loose in my pack. Great tip on the Nalgene bottle too!

I'm pretty ultralight but I would say I'm more minimalist than ultralight. I use an old icon pro 5200. Which I believe is actually the same as what they call their 6000 now. 5200 main compartment 800 lid. But either way for 7 days I can keep the bag fully compressed without "blowing out" the extra space in the top. For 10 days I just bring an extra cannister of fuel and then extra gallon zip of food per day which typically will make me have to blow out the top of the bag a little bit. I've never done an 2 week expedition hunt but I imagine that what I would do is run half of the food in between the load shelf. Maybe I would pack an extra pair or 2 of socks and underwear but for the most part my clothing stays the same. Kinda even regardless of the Temps. I tend to bring a layering system that works well from 20 degrees to 80 degrees regardless of the hunt. Mainly bc I'm hunting sept-novemeber so I normally don't see any swings outside of that

Heck yeah man. That makes sense with the layering system given the time of year. Thanks for chiming in!

@DialedinHunter ill also add that I also have the pro 2300 bag that attaches to the icon frame and sometimes when I am going on a 2-3day trip I start packing up that bag but by the time I get it stuffed to the brim I just take everything out and run the 5200 haha. I like having a little extra room and makes things easier packing meat out. I've never been one that has cared much to have a "day pack mode" style pack after I hike in.

@@nikolasshay3294 Hahahaha! I'm actually the same way. I just seem to ALWAYS use a 5000 ci pack, whether I'm day hunting or heading it for a week.
