I see nobody commented on their systems, low or high end. I am in South Africa where our government electricity system is terrible. Before 1994 we used to have some of the best electricity supply in the world. Now it is junk. So, I went semi of grid, my workshop is still on grid power but eventually it will be on solar as well. Plus, I will keep the grid power connected for when I possibly need more power for short term and as a backup. We still get grid power but like now it is off for about 8 hours per day and is expected to get worse. I don't have a lot of money for the high end systems and did a low cost installation, all by myself. It is only to have the normal stuff running in the house. It cost me less than a third of what the complete quotations I got from suppliers. My system is working 100% as what I expected from it. I started with only one panel and battery with an old modified sine wave inverter I had to see how it works. I researched and studied a lot about it I then slowly expanded from there. I shopped around for the best prices on items en searched for reviews on those items before ordering it. One thing I learned is that the official suppliers see you coming from a mile and want to sell me the most expensive stuff I don't need or want. Their priority is to make as much money from our situation as possible and not what is best for the client's needs and financial situation. Even if I had the money and have to do it all over again, I will again do it the way I did it.

Maybe add a nice hydro kit to cover your Winter needs? That's if you live near a source of running water of course.

Could you help me understand why most folks talking about off-grid normal homeowner solar systems... don't discuss price (and total price) of a typical system? I would like to go solar but first need to know if its something I can afford. Like you indicated, if you can't do it right the first time, it will be more expensive in the long run with the cheaper components. In the states, when folks are building a new home, or renovating the grid electrical system, the most common system installed is "200-AMP/240v". Setting aside specific daily watt consumption for a second... what would a 48-volt solar system cost (approximate of course) that would be equivalent to a "200-WATT" (120/240v) grid system ??? Online calculators indicate that would be a 48000-watt system. So, someone considering switching from grid to solar, who currently has a 200-AMP service to their house, and doesn't want to downgrade their energy capacity, could get an idea of what the switch over would cost (excluding backup generation).
