Internet connection doesn't really matter that much when it comes to video rendering. Sure, it's important but if you have a good cpu, i5 or i7 and only 4 mbps connection, you'll watch in 1080p with no buffers.

+??? I have a 2005 Pentium D 840 3.2ghz dual-core, 3gb 533mhz ddr2 ram, Nvidia GT220 1gb vram, and 20mbps internet... I get 1080p 60fps youtube on Edge! I can't even do 720p youtube on Chrome. graphics card/browser is more important than CPU.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 8 жыл бұрын
Weird terms you're using. Do you mean rendering or STREAMING? CPU and GPU acceleration mean everything for rendering, but any remotely modern PC, like made in the last 7 years, can render 1080p fine. It's the STREAMING that involves buffering and that is mostly dependent on the server side bottlenecks. In other words when you get that message from KZfaq that your internet connection is to blame, for most of us that is a bullshit lie. It's a bottleneck on youtube's end as I can benchmark a great connection on my end every time they have trouble streaming to me.

+LazerLord10 That's not surprising at all. Most common notebook class hard drives (the old spinning kind) not only scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to performance numbers, they often start digging to China. Notebook hard drives commonly perform far worse than their desktop cousins. Hence the reason why putting an SSD into a notebook PC would make it feel like a whole new computer again.

***** It probably can be debated if it is "THE best". But one thing is for certain it is extremely good, fast and reliable. It has been the go-to SSD of the community for quite some time and never disappointed. Its price is in a nice sweet spot where if you go much lower you start to sacrifice performance/reliability big time and vice verse, if you go much higher you start to pay too big a premium for not much gain. Now I am not saying there aren't any other drives that can match that, but if you want a short answer, that answer has been 850 Evo for some time and it always made people happy. So unless something significant changes, why give yourself a headache. If you want to know more, just google some reviews. you would be hard pressed to find a "best SSDs" list where the 850 Evo isn't on it, if not in the top spot.

This guy is very good. I like his videos! I work doing support on a large scale with computers and servers. I found with the SSD drives I have used, they all out performed regular hard disks. Some types are a bit faster than others, but for the average user under normal type work there is not much difference. On large servers where there is a lot of file access with multiple users then things can start to get critical to have the extra edge of performance. Stay with name brand SSD drives. Buy the drive from a reliable authorized source. When swapping out a hard disk for an SSD it is very important to properly set up the operating system to work safely with the SSD drive. For example disable defragmentation for the SSD drive. Turn off Indexing. Install a second data drive like an HHD for example, and use this drive for the system swap file. With an SSD is it best to write as little as possible to the drive. Most SSD drives have a write cycle life of 74TB. If a computer was to be writing 40GB per day the drive should last 5 years before failure. From what I have seen the average very active user would not be writing more than about 6GB to maybe about 12GB per day average. Best to be doing most of these writes to a second HHD drive. I use SSD drives for operating system and programs. I have everything set up to the writes on an HHD drive as a second drive.
@damstachizz
@damstachizz 8 жыл бұрын
Or you could not give a shit and just run with indexing on and keep the swap on the SSD. Even then any brand name one will last 5+ years, and by that time you'll have bought a new SSD with 4x the size and performance for 1/4th the cost, probably throwing the old one in the bin.

Some extra content I would consider worth mentioning when discussing SSDs: 1. Memory cell types: although the initial problems of TLC of short lifespan and speed degredations (Samsung 840 EVO specifically) have been mostly resovled, MLC drives still tend to have much better write speeds and much better consistency and stability over time. 2. Performance under stress: the IOPS ratings consumer drives advertise are usually the performance seen on the first 1/4/8GB read/written. Then, when the drive drops into steady state, the random (especially write) performance can become quite nasty. This relates to garbage collection performance and is a major determinant to the drive's suitablity for RAID. If the firmware is not optimized enough there might even be 0 IOPS points, in which case the system freezes. In the real world this can happen right after transferring large files onto the SSD. This is one of the differences between high end and low end drives that manufacturers are usually unwilling to mention. 3. Power loss protection: different drives feature different levels of power loss protection. Low or mid end drives usually have no power loss protection; some high end drives have basic power loss protection that allows the FLT table to be updated and saved correctly during power outage (e.g. OCZ Vector 180); some high end drives have full power loss protection that allows the whole DRAM cache to be flushed to the NAND (e.g. Intel 730). This spec could be important to people with unstable AC power. 4. User comments on product: this might sound like common sense but many SSDs in the past have had strange issues that don't easily show. OCZ Vector 180, being a high end drive, has had freezing after large file deletion problems; Samsung 840 Pro, being advertized as an enterprise grade drive, has had abnormal performance degredations when using EXT3 or EXT4 file formats. And looking way back, Intel drives used to have the 8M bug and Micron drives used to have drive detection bugs. Being storage mediums, SSDs are not good unless they are stable, and those hidden issues have great impacts on overall stability. Choosing SSD may just be one of those topics that is too hard to explain clearly in one episode. For newbies, I guess the safest solution might just be to buy whatever other people are buying at a certain price point.

Could you guys do a Tech Quickie about Latency, IOPS, Throughput and how it relates to storage devices (SSDs-NVME, SAS, SATA) or pools and maybe possible bottlenecks (Chipset vs CPU connected PCIE lanes) in the storage devices or pools? If you could cover enterprise storage in a server environment as well, it would be awesome.

Honestly, any SSD from one of the big SSD makers (Samsung, Crucial) at any price point will be unnoticeable from any other SSD at the same price point. Write cycles are not important anymore either. You can put hundreds of terabytes on a modern name brand SSD before you get any performance degradation. And by the time that happens, which would probably take like 20 years or so on a normal computer, the technology will be so different that it's not even worth keeping an SSD.
@Vicvines
@Vicvines 8 жыл бұрын
-T-X-M- Sandisk and Kingston are ok. I always look at the warranty. I like at least a 2 year warranty on any of my storage devices or CPUs or GPUs. With a good warranty you won't have to worry as much about it dying and having to buy a new one.
@Vicvines
@Vicvines 8 жыл бұрын
-T-X-M- Then I would go with a Sandisk because it's a reliable brand.
@Vicvines
@Vicvines 8 жыл бұрын
-T-X-M- No problem! SSDs are nothing to be intimidated by. A nice brand name company isn't going to sell a bad SSD nowadays and if there are any problems you get that warranty. A lot of people are afraid that they might get a shitty SSD but that never happens unless you buy some off brand SSD from eBay or something.

What about ssd that's just used for storage, gaming, installing other programs, should those be left with 1/4 of its total capacity empty as well? or it's ok for it to be almost full. Will it affect its lifespan and its performance?

Just get a Samsung 860 EVO, good performance, good longevity, as good of a price as you're going to get for that level of reliability. If you have something against Samsung, Western Digital Blue 3D Nand are also acceptable but not as fast. If price isn't an issue, get Intel Optane, it's the absolute fastest and will effectively never wear out.

In some games it's already fast even with HDD, but in games with lots of loading screens, such as Fallout, Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, STALKER, you'll get a big and noticeable boost. I shaved off 20 seconds of loading in heavily modded Fallout New Vegas easily.

Be wary of autosaves though, that can potentially destroy your performance. If you can tell the game to install on a hdd make sure to do so.

Why exactly? What's wrong with saving to ssd for it's speed?
@darkprinc979
@darkprinc979 7 жыл бұрын
MF Zoro Because ssd's have a limited number of times you can write to them, and performance will gradually decrease the more you do so. I don't know about other OS', but Windows automatically turns off certain services if it detects that it's installed on an ssd to preserve its lifespan. My last post was primarily about the Elder Scrolls games, which autosave a lot compared to other games.

Guys I have something I need help with. I switched from W7 to Kali Linux 2016 as my main OS. For some reason wireless is less effective when connecting in Kali than in Windows. My room is the farthest from the router and Kali is too slow to even launch Ice Weasel. If I move closer to the router it works but really slow. I never had this problem with W7 on the same laptop so I know it isn't my card. Should I change drivers maybe? If so what driver should I use?
