Not everyone was aware of this, but one of the *huge* inprovements going from PCIe 2.0 to 3.0, was PCIe encoding overhead. With 3.0 (and 4.0) it's 1.5% (128b/130b). With 2.0 it was 20% (8b/10b).

If it helps, the MSRP on our 7.6 TB card is about $5925. It is an enterprise-grade SSD, Gen4 PCIe X 16, which you can use on a workstation. The 8 m.2s come standard (we don't sell empty carriers).

It's not really about the raw throughput numbers though in that context, it's about access latency - even though these SSDs are really fast, SSDs still take an order of magnitude longer to access then ram, and that difference means that even if your CPU is ready for data and ready to complete an instruction, if it has to wait 10 times longer for each bit of data to come, it'll be 10 times slower
@allak1n
@allak1n 4 жыл бұрын
@@jjschmitty5093 Was just about to say this myself! That being said the next gen Playstations and XBoxes are using SSDs as a sort of memory cache for GPU/system use - its one of the reasons they achieved what they did in the latest unreal engine demo. Obviously not the SSDs/platforms we have available as consumers atm but I want that technology to come to the PC master race where it belongs... ;)

i haven't watched the video yet but it says that it's 50x faster than a sata ssd. so i'll assume the damn thing can put out 25 gigabytes per second sequential read and slightly lower on writes. the newest ddr5 spec supports 51 gigabytes per second per channel i believe, so you would need to raid 0 two of these ssds to get the performance of a single ddr5 channel. and then we have IOPS, which often matters more than sequential speeds. if the IOPS is high enough then we could actually use this as a replacement for ram, as an universal memory that supports execute in place (run stuff directly from storage without first copying it into ram) but then we would have to deal with the issue of endurance. DRAM and SRAM last pretty much forever, FLASH and 3dXpoint do not. they wear out as you write to them. i believe latency influences the IOPS count. as far as i'm aware pcie 4.0 is pretty fast and low latency so the latency thing would mostly be on the ssd controller

Careful there! We know times are a bit bleak and rough right now, but please stop and rethink your life's path and goals. Multiplying with zero is a gateway calculation. A slippery slope that can lead to hard calculations like division. I love M.2s but it leaves so much of a case unused since I always want clearance for a beefy GPU. Just did a build for my nephew that is all m.2 storage since we're now seeing 2.5" SATA SSD prices. The only reason I needed to use a PSU cable other than CPU, GPU and 24 pin ATX was for the fan/RGB hub. Those systems getting clean. Much easier to build now. In the 00s, before PSU shrouds were a thing, cable management was 99% of it.

I suppose as a bonus I never get sick.. but at this point I worry getting sick would actually kill me.
