I have an idea for a new product: A slip on replacement boot that could be retrofitted into a strut without removing the strut and taking off the spring. It would have a zipper to close and zip ties on the top and bottom.

KYB struts are great, but a few shop have recommended against using KYB strut mounts. They suggested going with Toyota mounts. I did noticed the KYB mounts are much lighter in weight.

Toyota uses struts made by KYB and most likely the strut mounts at the factory. I know when I ordered some struts at a dealer website, the struts arrived at my door and literally say KYB while the box says Toyota Genuine Parts with the part number stamped on the strut. The mount I'd imagine is also made by KYB to Toyota specs vs one directly from KYB. So the strut mounts from Toyota are most likely made in Japan (the struts on my Corolla were made in USA), and the ones directly from KYB sound like they come from a lower quality factory from China with cheap bearing that wear out prematurely. Edit: The strut mounts appear to be made by Koyo for the ones used by Toyota.

@@AirplaneFreak not every Toyota Shocks and Struts are made by KYB.. My father 2014 RAV4 made in Japan has Tokico Shocks and Struts...

@@user-me8xf1ju4c Yeah, that is true. Toyota works with many suppliers. So in the case of a Tacoma, the regular shocks are made by Hitachi and the sporty ones are made by Fox. Tokico sounds right. In the case of my 1998 Corolla, the strut mounts most likely are Koyo strut mounts.

I just put a set of KYB Strut-plus on my vehicle. Already have one mount that is creaking. Very disappointed as I will be going in to replace just the mount, again. The assembled unit was supposed to save me time, now it's costing extra.

I can testify this. I installed excel-G Shocks with mounts, theres a significant gap after I installed it unlike before. around half an inch , my mechanic told me KYB strutmounts are soft , he cannot do anything with it.

As you demo the boot and show the center shaft of the assembled strut, I note that the bumper is not there. Why? Forget? After all it is Show Time.

Not sure what you're talking about. There's a white bump stop at the top of the strut shaft, if that's what you mean. The vehicle's bumper appears to be on in every shot.

I'm wondering if that was normal for that movement you showed when turning steering wheel? When I turn my steering wheel in park as yall did i see that top part where the nut goes moving side to side

Is it necessary to replace the two shock absorbers together, even if the other is in good condition? Knowing that the car has traveled 100,000 miles

We recommend replacing worn out shocks with all 4 at the same time, but at the very least, replace the pairs on the same axle. It's similar to replacing 1 shoe instead of a pair, even if the toe is only busted out on 1 shoe. You'd have a very uneven and unbalanced experience if only one side is new and working correctly. Your vehicle will not feel right, nor handle properly when you only replace 1 corner's shock or strut.

I have a question. Last week, I bought some struts from an online company. One of the struts do not match the original strut. The strut mount three bolt pattern does not match where the strut is installed. The company is suggesting that I put it in and than try to turn it (upper strut plate) as hard as I can. I have built many strut assemblies in the past. I know if I use a coil spring compressor, I can turn it somewhat and than tighten it, but I do NOT have a spring compressor. The coils are very close to each other. So I truly find this idea crazy. I thought the whole point of buying a strut assembly is to get that "out of the box experience" where I can go from the box to the car without buying tools or making any modifications. My concern is if I try to do it this way, I will get the strut assembly dirty, oily and scratched and if I do not succeed, than I am stuck with this strut and unable to return. It appears that the strut mount cannot be turned. It is very tight. The bolt pattern is different than the old one. Its clear to me it came like that from KYB. If I turn the strut mount a little, than it would work. Any thoughts? I love KYB's, I bought them for previous cars I have owned. Closest to OEM you can get. Merchant refuses to return my money. Any thoughts?

DISCLAIMER: Social Media comment sections aren't the best place for technical advice! If you are 100% sure that the part number on the complete assembly is the correct part for that corner of the specific vehicle you’re working on, then, the bolt pattern should be correct. However, there’s a chance it’s not clocked correctly and some strut mounts have an adjustable clocking position. It seems like you know one technique for clocking, but I believe you can mount the unit and then rotate the strut assembly a small amount to get it in position as the company is suggesting. @@kybamericascorp Thank you for your kind reply. Yes, I have quadrupled checked the part number using various sources. Things do happen. I was tempted to clock it as you stated, but I did NOT want to take a chance on scratching the item, being unable to clock the strut mount and than sitting here with a scratched up strut. Everyone, from the do-it yourself-er to the professional mechanic knows KYB's struts are great. The space between the coils is very limited. The strut compressor I got does not fit. KYB advised me via email I should go back to the merchant and swap them, which is what I am doing. I been working on cars for 35 years or so, I knew once the part did not match up I needed to stop the installation. You guys are the leaders of the industry for a reason. Thanks for all that you do. After much persuasion, the merchant has decided to take them back.

I had a pair of KYB quick struts installed and they are making creaking noises when steering left or right at low speeds. Installer says the mounts are defective. Second opinion reveals the same. Why are brand new parts of this quick strut defective?

I am dealing with the same problem. My mechanic says the top bearings are bad and I can only assume KYB are cheaping out on decent bearings.

unfortunately you have to remove the strut from the vehicle and compress the springs to get access to the boot.

Please i need you advise, can i spray silicone oil (locotite lb 8021) on top of strut mount to help smooth steering? And if it could help is there any other points to spray? Thanks in advance

We would not advise spraying silicone oil on top of the strut mount to help smooth out your steering. We would first advise you to take it to a trusted mechanic who can figure out if the mount is the issue with the steering and not some other steering specific component or a combination of issues. If the mount is the issue, replacing your worn mount with a new KYB mount can really help. Parts wear down as a system over time, if you're experiencing issues with steering and think it's coming from the mount area, you may want to consider looking at the entire strut assembly. @@kybamericascorp after checking that no steering related issue I sprayed silicon oil on the bottom of the strut mount (above the spring from underneath the car and it helped in smoothing the steering. Would it damage any thing by time?? “It is the original mount since new” my car is elantra HD 2010, is there a bearing inside? Or just rubber

Perhaps you could use better mounts or have better quality control on your Strut-plus units. I just installed a set on my car, and one of the mounts is creaking already after 1000 miles. Very displeased in the product.

@@kybamericascorp I did. All were torqued to spec. Everything put together correctly. I suspect a faulty mount that wasn’t assembled correctly at your factory.

when did they explain what the strut boot does? They only explained how to install it smh

at 1:11 when Aaron says it protects the polished strut shaft from dirt and debris. Any contaminants getting in there risk breaking the seal of the strut and could cause leaking. Sometimes a leak is self inflicted. Vise grips and pliers will dig into, or score the shaft and rip the rubber seal that leads to a leak and ultimately a part failure. Strut boots are used to protect the strut from any external debris that could damage the part.
