Erik ten Hag got Man Utd back into the Champions League by playing to the strengths of his players and utilising a direct attacking style.
So where do they go from here? What does ten Hag want Manchester United to be better at? And how do Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana fit into ten Hag's plan?
Carl Anka explains.

Good video. With Onana basically operating as a kind of central back or even defensive midfield pivot, it will be interesting to see if ETH instructs players like Casemiro to go a little further forward in transition to have more bodies in attack during the transition which is evidently important for ETH's tactics to succeed
@GeneralThunderbolt
@GeneralThunderbolt 10 ай бұрын
You can already see ten Hags adjustments in preseason because of onana in the build up. Martinez is moving forward into midfield to form a box similar to man city but arguably better as onana literally plays as the CB so you still have 3 at the back
@eddyvideostar
@eddyvideostar 10 ай бұрын
Dear @Pjdude100 and Thunderbolt: Before Onana viewed the Manchester horizon, I envisioned *exactly* how the ball would caress the back of the net. How *quickly* this occurred is the ironic shock that sticks in the crowd's craw, *etching the soul of risk.* Manchester United's front-line and field players doing what they should do, saved the face of Onana, putting him in back his place.

@@danielwright6432 honestly I do, not as intense in the press but better control of matches. I feel that Ten Hags ideal play style is modern total football. As a United fan I have to admit that I’m slightly disappointed now that I understand how Ten Hag wants to play. I was expecting 18/19 Ajax ball. Extremely Cryuffian, very technical football. But I guess he’s moulding the team around his best players and one of them happens to be Bruno Fernandes who is one of the most transitional players in the league. So I guess we’re gonna play more basketball/football than actually balling out then. Sigh there goes my dream of beautiful flowing football.

Onana will provide so much joy for neutrals. Not because he’s bad, but because he’s so aggressive. His first mistake will inevitably cause meltdowns in the press and with Man U diehards. Get your popcorn ready. (That said, he’s going to make Man U better and is worth putting up with his howlers. Only keeper better on the ball than Onana is Ederson, and Onana is probably even as a shot-stopper.)

Were shaping up nicely, with Mount to add to the assists, goals and pressing. A striker who can actually finish (Sorry Weghoust) in Rasmus, we actually look closer to a Ten Hag team. I now understand what ETH meant by him wanting United to be the best transitional team in the world, they want to be the Real Madrid of the PL. For which I do see how Bruno plays a massive part in it and so does Casemiro, but I dont see how Mount can be the one in the 8 role. Maybe someone like Amrabat or *cough cough* Sangare can help out for a double pivot lol. and better ball playing CBs are a necessity and way higher depth. United can go the right way or miss big time. Liverpool, for me right now are the best transitional team in the league especially with some brilliant runners like Nunez and Gakpo, aided by Szobozlai and Trent.

Your conclusion from the statistics are rather skewed. Attempted most direct attack, yes. Most effective, no. Just because they attempted most does not mean they are the best at it since the actual attack that lead to goal is not leading by much compared to other team with less attempt.
