Do Bronze players even exist anymore? This is the complicated and mysterious story of the lowest rank in Rocket League. What was once the starting point of a player's competitive journey has now been reduced to the point that it's almost as exclusive and rare as a Supersonic Legend. So why does the Rocket League ranking system seem to skip Bronze? And what does a Bronze lobby even look like in 2022? Is it all smurfs, bots or legitimate players? What makes a person actually fall to Bronze? With so many unanswered questions it seems the only way to really know for sure is to experience it for myself. Join me on this journey into the lowest ranks of Rocket League as I search for a Bronze player using Voice Chat and see what it's like to play in the bottom 1% of the playerbase.

Man that takes me back to 2015. Driving around with the lawnmower boost, with the camera way to close to the car, watching streams while ballchasing and a time where freestyling was just air rolling and hitting the ball. So much fun watching this game grow over the years and going from casual to a real competetive scene.

Same, bro. Same. I felt like I couldn't be worse than anyone. I kept playing with easy AI offline, which I enjoyed. Here you can score (and win) just by doing the kickoff right! It's always the kids in games that end up bringing internet people together with wholesome vibes and encouragement for them. Always the kids. I’ve been trying to get my dad into rocket league recently and he’s currently in Bronze, so I’ve been able to see what it’s like in Bronze nowadays with my very own eyes. There’s probably as many own goals as there are regular goals. Sometimes my dad misses kickoff completely even though all he does is boost to the ball. He will also occasionally drive up to the ceiling on and start spinning out of control. He doesn’t attempt flips often, but when he does, it’s usually single jump flips. At some point, I found out that he didn’t know how to double jump. There was another time he got into a Rule 1 with a teammate. He does not know about Rule 1 but he still didn’t break it because he didn’t know how to back up. He plays as if he’s never played a video game in his life before, even though he’s beaten Elden Ring. In most competitive games I’ve seen, there was usually at least one person who went AFK or left the game for no reason. My dad actually won his first placement match because the whole team left in under a minute. I’ve seen smurfs in casual but I don’t think I’ve seen one in competitive yet. Forfeiting is not common, but it does happen. I’ve also seen a 1v1 go to a 0-0 OT, which is something that didn’t think I’d ever see. In all, Bronze is a train wreck, but it’s a beautiful train wreck.

This reminds me of a kid that I met while I was streaming. He was just a genuine kid who was just having fun on the game and looking for people to queue up with. Also reminds me of my two kids who also play (10 and 7). While I’m focused on getting out of Silver on 3v3 and reaching Plat on 2v2, my kids are more interested in customizing their cars (and waiting to hit 30 so I can trade my Rocket Pass cosmetics with them), and just having fun playing a few matches. This is great content and I’m really glad I stumbled upon this. Makes me rethink my focus on my rank and now I just want to have fun on RL again. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.

the bailing when down a goal is actually so bad now, it's gotten to a point where I've had teammates vote ff on tied/winning games because they didn't like something I did, and then watched them turn the match into a 3v1, not even like they played bad, but full on joined the other team's rotation to attack our net

The frequency of how often that happens astounds me. It worries me a little too. I'm an old geezer of 57, a Gold III solo cue 3v3 player, so almost all my tm8's and opponents are kids by comparison. The level of "quit" in some of these kids scares me. Have they never fought for a comeback? Do they quit on things that matter in life as easily as they quit on a video game that doesn't matter? I hope not. As a kid I played a LOT of pickup football, hockey, baseball, basketball games. There were one or two kids in the neighborhood who would more or less quit when things got tough. To me that made the game interesting - now there was something to overcome. And if your opponent was the "quitter", you knew where to go with the next play...and you knew whom you never wanted on your team. And speaking from experience, the quitter attitude - that translates fully into real life issues later on. Want to know the secret to ranking up? Here it is. Make sure your team scores first. If you can go up 2-0, even though there is 4:30 remaining in the game, you can rest assured that at least one player wants to FF.

@@moosewhizzerdave2066 I agree with you, for me it makes me even more up for it having to make a comeback. Being down 2-0 with 4 minutes left on the clock is not the time to panic, my mindset is that there’s plenty of time.

@@tedjovel1876 I played four games this afternoon. Game 1 - player bailed when we were down 2-0 with about 4 minutes left. Game 2 - player was DOA, never started, so it was a 2v3 the entire game. Game 3 - player bailed right off the bat, then returned, we won. I assume he returned because of a warning note he saw when he bailed, because his ping was fine. Game 4 - player was DOA, never started, he bailed immediately, another 2v3. I had enough at that point. I always have a season of 3v3 going with bots offline, so I played a game of that and turned off the X-Box. The bots stink, but they don't quit and they don't complain.....

It's so easy to get tilted in this game, it's usually why I quit for a week or longer at a time, but this kid personifies why we all started playing. It was just fun.
