Cartesian Presents Rebranded a scifi short film examining what the future of racism and prejudice could look like in our society.
After his son brings home his new fiance for the first time shortly following the passing of his mother Cedric Young (The Chi, Backdraft) stars as a father who is completely unaccepting of their relationship for an unexpected reason.
From the director: It's an unfortunate reality that prejudice and discrimination are a part of human nature. When we look backwards however, we can see that this behavior has changed and evolved over time in our society. For instance, it's easy to judge old movies for their disregard on various social issues which would never pass today. Inherently though that begs the question, what will the future look back on and judge us for?
Rebranded was created as a thought experiment. It leads audiences to assume it's a modern day story with modern day prejudice. However, when this is idea is turned on it's head it forces the audience to think about what the future of prejudice might look like. In doing so my intention was to cast a new perspective, and in turn self evaluation, into our modern ideas about this condition.
How would you respond to your son bringing home an AI girlfriend?

Hey I'm the director of this film! I'm curious to hear what you all think the future of AI holds for our society. But before you comment it's worth hearing about my intentions behind the film. Normally I like to let my work sit and have the audience take it away with whatever ideas they’d like to discuss, however I’ve noticed trend with a few comments here of people misunderstanding the film, so I believe it's necessary to dive into the ideas a little deeper in the comments. It's an unfortunate reality that prejudice and discrimination are a part of human nature. When we look backwards however, we can see that this behavior has changed and evolved over time in our society. For instance, it's easy to judge old movies for their disregard on various social issues which would never pass today. Inherently though that begs the question: what will the future look back on and judge us for? Rebranded was created as a thought experiment. It leads audiences to assume it's a modern day story with modern day prejudice, an idea which many already have pre-entrenched ideas about. However, when this is idea is turned on it's head and involves something new - AI - there is a moment of self evaluation that happens. The hope is that this new perspective will make everyone think more deeply about it, and in turn how little is really separating us today. It's not far reaching to imagine a future in which we continue to elevate AI to the point of eventually being capable of feeling human emotions, and yet still insisting on its indentured servitude. Slavery is an extremely dense topic for any short film. The decision to bring it up was very carefully considered and done in a way with absolutely no intention of undermining the severity of the past or the racism that is currently still experienced today. That being said, these are very important things to discuss because if we don't then history is bound to repeat itself in a new way. You need not look far to find an already deep seeded fear, distrust, and prejudice against this new life form which is already in its infancy here on earth. In terms of casting, it would have been easy to make the choice of a white father and son with a black fiance, but that would have fallen far too closely into the same ideas we know about racism today. Instead the choice was meant to say that prejudice is a universal phenomenon with all humans, and even those who have experienced it most severely are prone to it. In the end It’s our universal capability for love that connects us as humans. My hope is that this film can spark ideas, and discussions so that we may all learn and understand more about one another as we build towards a brighter future together. So let me know what you think our future looks like! Please make sure to subscribe to Cartesian to see more films like this and to like, comment, and share the video to help support us filmmakers and all the hard work and money we put into these projects! We have plenty of more great films coming soon! Hope to see you there!

Wow I'm absolutely blown away from watching this video. As children we are not born into a world to hate...this is something that is taught. As we grow older do we open our eyes to realize that the things we were taught weren't true or do we see the world and people in a negative, hateful light.

I think people will always find a reason to segregate and discriminate against ourselves and others. If it isn't skin color, it's eye color, hair color, gender, language, national origin, etc. etc. Moving forward it would not be surprising that we would discriminate against either potential alien life or even artificial intelligence.

What is lacking right now are The Three Laws. The people pushing for the creation of the AI beasts are not looking for anything but the ability to destroy by way of a totally subservient mechanism. They think they will be safe. If the story that all the different AI programs are indeed out to destroy humanity, it should be noted that it was learned from somewhere. Learned from the people that push the creation of it. Everything those that want this is all over the internet, readily available to the AI. The creators will get what they are building, a destructive weapon that will be nearly impossible to stop. It won’t stop at the targets that they will be set upon at the beginning. It will continue until all humans are gone. All will be lost.

I liked the short film, but I'm not sure exactly how I feel about the kind of racism that people like me that look like the father and son experience now being equated to not accepting A.I. (objectively a non-living thing) as human and/or equal. Human beings are actual humans and are in fact equal regardless of anyone's perceptions regarding color, ethnicity, etc. A.I. entities are complex computer programs and are unequivocally NOT human, no matter how they appear or are programmed to present. I get the message, but there's an aspect to the film that is a bit tone deaf and diminishing of the undeniable wrong which is racism by comparing it to a paradigm that is debatable.
@primer131stdivrecon
@primer131stdivrecon Жыл бұрын
Key here: "programed to present". This is a sci-fi film and the AI in the film demonstrates that it can feel emotion on the same level as humans do. If you read the director's comment it elaborates that in a world where racism no longer exists, some new form of prejudice will. Just look at the other comments about AI and it's easy to imagine the level of discrimination it would be subject to even if it was logically the same as a human. It's certainly debatable but if a robot could think and feel the exact same as a human would it really be any different to treat it as an other?
@Melodybrown77
@Melodybrown77 Жыл бұрын
@@primer131stdivrecon Yes. That was kind of my whole point I realize that the disparity between A.I. and humans was compared to racism against people of color. My point is that I do not agree those two discriminations are comparable. Because Black people are inarguably humans. As a programmer, I know for a fact that A.I. only emulates feelings. They exist as sets of algorithms that break down into 0s and 1s. They are distinctly not human though people often personify them. Not the same thing as modern world racism. I did read the director's comments....and supplied my own perspective. As a person who has experienced racism in real life, I commented on how the metaphor made me feel.

@@Melodybrown77 yeah I understand if you feel that way but I still think you're not giving credit to what AI will one day become. Again today you're correct 1s and 0s, but it won't be long before AI is in itself it's own life form. What makes us human? Our mind is in a way a computer and it feeds 1 and 0s through neurons but we interpret that into what we perceive to be life. People say definitively that it won't have emotion and it's not capable but imagine someone from 100 years ago trying to predict the smart phone. We are only at the very infancy today, imagine the very infancy of computers, they filled an entire room and only did very simple things... And beyond that do you think in 100 years racism will be as sensitive to your descendants? What will be the issue that's flagrantly wrong in the future that we're conditioned to accept today? Again it's okay to disagree but it's a sci-fi, remove yourself and use your imagination. It's so much bigger than what you're grounding it to. That's all I'm saying

@@primer131stdivrecon I think it would be a shame if my descendants think the belief that sophisticated software is not human is the same as treating other humans as if they're not. And I think it is you who is not giving credit to all that a human being is to believe that any artificial intelligence will ever achieve humanity. Just because I dont agree with your perspective does not mean I have a lack of imagination. Maybe I am not far enough removed from actual machine learning to enjoy the illusion of humanity others who don't intimately understand how A.i. is made get to project onto A.I. But I am not unaware of the future capabilities of A.I. I may, in fact, be more aware of how amazingly well A.I. will come to replicate humans than you. I just don't see that as the same as prejudice against actual humans. Maybe because I am one of those humans that have actually experienced racism instead of being an outside observer of such racism? Who knows. I still don't believe that there should be such a resistance to recognizing the huge difference that there is no question that minorities are factually living, breathing humans while personifying A.I. is a matter of belief based on no empirical facts. And there is an egregious amount of moral wrong to real life racism while "discriminating" against A.I. pertains to over-empathisizing with an inanimate object.

@@primer131stdivrecon I just hope humans have dispensed completely with actual human racism long before fighting for machines' "human" rights becomes a real thing. Because that would be horribly offensive and dehumanizing to those who suffer the ignorance of true racism now.

This is sick. Robots will NEVER have a soul. To be in love with a robot is no different than being in love with a toy, eliminating any chance of a meaningful relationship with a human being.

Except this AI is fully capable of emotion. Reasoning. Logic. It’s a living being. Just different. You can quite easily have a meaningful relationship with it.
