I really enjoyed the tv series and have watched it twice! Similar to how you've re-read the book to catch all the foreshadowing! I'm not sure how closely it follows the book, but there was definitely a lot of love put into the production and every last detail in the costuming, settings, and special effects are meaningful. I would definitely recommend the show. This is my first video of yours and I gotta say that you put off such a great energy! I'm currently in college for a bachelor's in English and very few of my professors have the same passion for teaching. I really appreciate what little of your content I've seen and I look forward to binging the rest!

I finished reading The Haunting of Hill House today. It's really good, I want to read some of Shirley Jackson's other novels. I have seen the movie versions and the Netflix inspired adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House. The 1963 version is wonderful and the closest to the book. I suggest watching that and seeing the Netflix series. Though the Netflix version of the Haunting of Hill house is inspired by the book. It's not a literal adaptation of the book.

I like the idea of reading (especially), mimicking "their" writing by writing (I assume), then trying to write my own (at this point, writing is a chore) ... I will give this a try. Just curious but have you read any of Robert Aickman, if yes, thoughts or perhaps a video. Thanks.

You mentioned Hill House's opening paragraphs and how they establish the setting itself, which is definitely a character (the villain, probably). It really got me thinking about my own novel (published almost 4 years now). Like in a lot of these discussions about craft, I immediately looked at myself, sorta like how sometimes one has dreams of showing up someplace naked. I wrote an opening chapter a lot like Jackson's - but I put it in a chapter *behind* a prologue, which itself opens up with more "this is what it feels like to (x)". It got me feeling really insecure and wondering if I made the right move, if I should have leaned more heavily on my setting in the opening chapter like Jackson did. It's a gutsy move and I think I might have lost my nerve in my last few drafts. And now I'm sitting here wondering if it's a serious enough mistake for me to pull my novel and change the opening somehow. Discussions on craft always make me self-reflect in the worst ways. 😅 Anyway, thank you for persuading me to finally pick up this book for real.

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy it. I can certainly relate to the second-guessing. Reading good writing is an essential exercise for improving one's own, but whenever I read someone at a higher level than me I get pangs reflecting on my own inadequacies. But as Nietzsche said, that which does not kill us...
