Here's what it's like to be a hotelie (hotel student) at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration. As a recent grad, I share some of the takeaways from the school. As I mention toward the end of the video, there is so much more to being a Hotelie than the classes - hope to share them with you soon :)

@@hoteliepattie Thanks so much for replying! I actually have a child in the hotel school currently. I shared your video with them and they have shared it already. It's a great resource for potential and incoming students as well as current students who would like more information about upcoming classes they will be taking.❤

Great video! I'm applying to Cornell's Nolan school of hotel administration and want to study hospitality, specifically for the meetings and event planning industry (for investors and companies). I was wondering if you knew whether or not that's something the hotel school has taught you or offers or whether or not it fits more into Dyson program at the school of business.

Hello! Thank you so much :) For special events & planning, the hotel school will definitely be your best fit. I believe we offer a class (HADM 4340: Catering and Special Events Management), however you should expect to learn a lot more about hospitality outside of this specific focus. For those who are not necessarily interested in hospitality and just want to major in business, the Dyson program is definitely a comparative option. However, from what you've told me, I think the hotel school has your best interest!

Hello dear! So happy to hear that you found the video helpful. And yes, explaining what I studied in college has always been (and still continues to be) a challenge, especially when talking to people who are less familiar with the hospitality industry. Now with this added insight, you can take your own hotelie experience to determine what attending the hotel school means for you and what you want to get out of it. Whatever you do, you are in for a real treat :)

Thank you for this! I’m a sophomore in high school thinking of applying to the Nolan school in the future, and I’m wondering what extracurriculars related to hospitality you were able to do in high school if there were any :)

I interned one summer at a geriatric hospital, which is loosely within hospitality. Other than that, I didn’t have any extracurriculars directly linked to the industry (unlike some of my friends who worked at hotels and restaurants). But I was able to demonstrate in my personal statement how my experiences all linked to hospitality. I may create a video more on this so stay tuned!

WELCOME TO THE HOTEL SCHOOL KIRAH WOOHOO! You are in for the best college ever. In terms of workload, it obviously depends on the individual and the courses you take. Personally, I would say it was difficult yet manageable. I don't recall ever having a "chill" week in terms of my studies nor my seeing my friends just hang out, but again, us hotelies are very involved with other student organizations and recruitment that also demands a lot of our time. If you worked hard enough to make it to the hotel school, you will do just fine! I did try a two PE classes (yoga and golf), and would have loved to try swedish massage if I could fit it into my schedule. With tips, I have too many, but one is that you should definitely make use of the alumni directory and the connections you make with visiting alums and graduates (cold calls and emails requesting coffee chats is very much normal at the hotel school and we have the best community that people are generous with their time and willing to help each other out); it makes a huge difference between just knowing this and actually doing it. If you have any more specific questions, I would be happy to answer them 😊

@@hoteliepattie YOU ARE THE SWEETEST HUMAN BEING EVER!!!! Thank you so so much for these super useful tips, and inside look into the hotel school! Some courses I’m taking in my first year is the food and beverage operations one, org behavior & leadership skills, business computing, and the hotelie launchpad classes. Did you take those as well? :)) If I may ask how was your golfing pe course? ☺️ and did you enjoy the Hotelie professors? I’ve heard some professors in other majors are kinda…difficult and not very nice hahaha. Also, what kind of computer did you use? I’m thinking of buying a Microsoft one to do homework on :) So so sorry for so much questions, you just seem so knowledgeable and kind 🥰 no rush, thank you and I hope you have a great day! Love from Hawai’i 💙 (p.s. where are you from too!)

Hello Pattie, I am expected to graduate in September 2022 with a Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management. Are there courses in America to train hoteliers that you recommend?
@hoteliepattie
@hoteliepattie Жыл бұрын
Hello Odai! Apologies for the late reply. First of all, congratulations on graduating! For training to become a hotelier in the US, I would say hands on operational experience and learning on the job in Manager in Training (MIT) programs at a hotel property owned by larger brands is most ideal. Big hotel companies like Four Seasons, Hilton, IHG, and Hyatt each have their own program; Marriott calls its program, "Marriott Voyage." Each program runs about 12-18 months and breeds you to enter into a managerial position after the program. These programs can be competitive sometimes. So, in order to give yourself a competitive edge, I would definitely recommend (1) considering a hotel internship if you haven't had one (operational positions like front desk, rooms, f&b, special events, if you're interested in working on a specific property, or corporate internship if you are more interested going hr, sales, marketing, finance route) and/or (2) completing a Hospitality Management certificate program - Cornell Hotel School is a great option :) Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

Hello! For application requirement for the mmh program, the hotel school website would be your best resource! I finished the undergrad program, so I am not familiar with how the admissions works for master’s. However, if you have more specific questions regarding what attending the hotel school is like and what the application process was like for me, I’d be happy answer those questions :)
