Mental health has become a widely discussed and emphasized subject, particularly in the last five years. While mental health services are a critical component to healthcare, the mental health industry operates on multiple underlying dogmas that are opposed to the Islamic worldview.
Dr. Zohair Abdul Rahman joins Imam Tom Facchine to bring to light four key dogmas at play that both Muslims who seek access to these services and practitioners themselves should keep in mind when facing this paradigm.

Masha Allah, what an enlightening content. As a convert in the West, being a caregiver to my terminally ill parents, I can relate soo much to what was discussed with respect to pain "management" in the western medicine. If you agree to it, in the West they will drug you into unconsciousness when you are on your death bed and even before. This purely naturalistic view on the human being is truly cruel. As a convert I am so grateful for the knowledge and resources in Islam, I hope everyone in our ummah will realise what a blessing and treasure the gift of Islam is ..

I have been suffering from mental health issues for a while and before converting and even after converting I felt I didn’t belong anywhere on Earth but getting more and even modest knowledge of Islam helped a lot for example thinking of Ibrahim Alayhi Assalam who was an Ummah by himself helped AlhamduliLah for the blessing of Islam

You are absolutely right, sometimes in addition to putting our trust in Allah, reading the Quran with understanding and prayer we may also need medication to address the chemical imbalances within our brain/body

@@zak992 medication is not the solution, it’s a problem of meaning. Some people have messed up lives so they couldn’t carry enough good meaning to understand why it happened and how to move on normally. They should explore the influence of their two parents and peers unto themselves and all the crap they’ve internalized from the external world. Their potential is trapped in their misunderstanding of their situation

So needed this. I felt like I was swept way too deep into the current mental health industry and realised that there needed to be active interventions from Muslim scholars to really encapture the wider scope of mental health. It really is portrayed from the statement correlation does not mean causation. May Allah grant us higher understanding of all beneficial ilms so that we redirect it to its Source. InsyaAllah ❤

I also realised that I have a tendency to utilise islam is therapy😢 i used to reason doing this act because the end goal seemed to be on a certain way i want to feel. A certain way i want to view myself, not how i want Allah to view and guide me through

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Be moderate and adhere to moderation, for there is no one among you who will be saved by his deeds.” They said: “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Not even me. Unless Allah encompasses me with mercy and grace from Him.” Being a muslim ee acknowledge both the spiritual and physical aspects of health. Well said.

I loved the end of the video particularly the end of it. I'm dealing with OCD (scrupulous) ie the waswassah. I have watched so many videos both secular and Islamic specialists on that field. Their pieces of advice have been helpful ( the ignoring of the thought, the exposure therapy,...). But with all that I'm still dealing with it. And it's getting worse by day. I never had a chance to consult a doctor. Cause we don't have that kind of doctor ( muslim and psychotherapist at a time) who can fully comprehend my problem. So I'm taking care of myself with dhikr and dua.... I wish yaqeen could organize remote consultations like on zoom or Skype to help people like me.

OCD is the same issue : a lack of meaning The meaning has to come from YOUR life, with the help of Allah you can understand your past, where you come from, why you have these symptoms (because OCD is a symptom not a disease) and finally move on and not be too concerned about the past or anxious about the future. Most of what is at work with OCD are complexes (dissociation of a part of ego consciousness when encountering a painful experience (especially with the mother, and father)), which distort reality and asks you to agree with it in order to survive. When you agree with it (for example you think « maybe I’m really inadequate…, I’m really bad, … ») consciously or unconsciously you have agreed and let the complex run a part of your consciousness and that’s why you’re stuck in a ideation with negative emotions etc… The reality is that you’re not defective or inadequate, you’re normal and okay and we all are. But your life experience may have made you think otherwise and the fact you couldn’t find meaning to get out of those painful experiences, means that you’re still dealing with it. Meaning is the most important, Islam can give you that but you also need to know yourself and explore your life, emotions. At the end of the road you’ll find meaning, vitality and healing Courage
@commontouch1787
@commontouch1787 4 ай бұрын
The meaning and answers are not cognitive btw, being too cognitive is a trap and often what makes the OCD continue. The answers are in the deeper part of yourself, which feels emotions and behind these emotions there are instincts (7 basic instincts + meta-narrative (of your life experiences) instincts) which carry the meaning of why you’re in that state, and how to move on
@commontouch1787
@commontouch1787 4 ай бұрын
People with OCD often are intelligent and have higher potential, but because of their life experience their innate potential (carried by instincts) has been trapped in a ideation of « why did all of this happen, why my life has been like that, « why did my mom do that to me » etc… » and they got stuck in that. All that energy put in thinking and OCD, is actually innate potential that we can deliver in real life adaptation, which involves relating (to yourself, to others) in a positive way

Interesting topic. It overlays with the new age 'philosophy' which is very popular nowadays (especially under young people). It uses tools such as manifestations, yoga, meditating, praying to an 'universe', healing the (generational) trauma's and chakra healing in order to heal your soul from all the (past) hurt so that you can have a healed life and a life that you've dreamed of. Can you do a talk on this subject? And I'm also very curious on your islamic take on this: In the west, practitioners use tools for generational healing to heal trauma's that's passed on to the childeren, with the idea that our forefathers and mothers never healed themselves, and thus passed it on to their children, leaving them also traumatised. To me it sounds, from a psychological viewpoint very logical, because when you're hurt, you hurt people as well. What is your islamic vieuw on this?
