For painting my imperial fists, I did have a crack airbrushing imperial fist contrast paint but it gunked up my brush quick smart, and I got a very similar result spraying Vallejo game yellow ink over the underpainting without all the hassle with the brush.

I’m a figure painter who enjoys all the communities enthusiasm around painting. I suggest the community to look outside the arena model painting. For example, at the “feminine settings” of a nail salon they use something called a Jelly Stamp. It functions in part with a template engravings. Any symbol you want is engraved into a sheet of metal. The artist applies a dapple of paint then with a card spreads the pigment over the engraved surface. The artist then takes a Jelly Stamper which is crystal clear onto the readied paint. The Gelly Stamper can then apply that paint PERFECTLY onto the convex surface of your choice. From the same nail salon arena of painting, they have metallic paints suspended in uv resin . These paints can be manipulated with magnets to achieve INSANE effects. One such effect involves lenticular holographic stickers painted over with translucent metallic uv resin paints , imagine a firecracker hologram exploding and the metallic paint shimmering like the fire dissolving into smoke. Image transference, an acrylic polymer emulsion like a high gloss medium will take colored laser printer images and apply them to any surface hence you can print a flesh tone apply the medium to the figure allow to dry and remove paper with water and through a chemical process the printed flesh tone will go where ever you wish and look like perfect stippled flesh. The primer base of the model ought to be white so light can pass through the laser printer paint to bounce off the white primer and illuminate the skin. I wish you all the best

If you do a follow-up, may I suggest - 1. Precision masking tape (or other masking techniques like blu tac) 2. Using Air paints with a regular brush so you don't have to bother thinning them. 3. Not painting the bottom of vehicles, or only priming them. 4. Buying second hand minis that have been decently base coated then just adding shades and highlights. 5. Slapping 3 colours on and calling them "battle ready". 6. Paying for someone else to paint them. 7. Not painting or assembling your minis and leaving them stacked in boxes in an ever-growing monument to your lack of executive function.

Jumping in on "Translucent paints", I'd call them stain and shade paints. Inks don't darken as they pool, they saturate, which can actually BRIGHTEN recesses. Contrast and speed paints however act as shade in the recesses and stain the flat areas.

What was so telling to me is that you started with what the technique or tool is then had to explain that to do it really well it took a lot more. I am in the camp that nothing is cheating (which I suspect you three are as well) and it’s a journey of discovery how a tool, product, or technique can enrich your hobby. Really enjoyed the breakdown!

I am at the airbrush section of the video, but I found a tiny airbrush kit on amazon that has a small compressor (like, two hard drive stacks on each other big) because I have no space either. I love it, have a lot of fun with! For the technique, I thik stippling is my "should be illegal" : I tried it on my tanks after seeing Richard Grey video on a Death Guard tank, and a technique that make me feel like I am as good as him should not existe ! ^^ otherwise, I just tried painting with acrylic ink too, and that feels like a aughty trick ! always a pleasure to listen to you guys!

Every time I listen to your show while hobbying it applies to something I’m doing at that moment. This time it’s the peeling of airbrushed acrylic paint after applying oil/mineral spirits wash on some terrain. The paint was coming off so easy it was frustrating! Definitely putting a gloss varnish down to protect layers as I go. Especially for terrain that gets handled more.

Anyone complaining about techical mini paint products had better been mixing all their own colors from Cyan Magenta and Yellow with white and black. It's all about using different tools to achieve a desired result. And as you said, as people practice with the tool it feels less cheaty.

Or cool gundam kit in general is the Master Grade Dynames Kit

Re Dipping, if you have ever tried to paint 200-400 15/18mm miniatures to assemble an army the week before a tourney, Dipping was an absolute cheat. It doesn't work for 28mm-32mm modern minis, but for the less frenetically detailed metal minis of the 70s, 80s and 90s, block colours followed by a dip allowed you to get an army on the table that at least didn't look two dimensional. Dipping and even slapping on a wash was very much a quick and easy way of getting minis finished to tabletop standard I also think you used your current skill level and accumulated experience of painting as the POV for the ratings, whereas the majority of painters are at a level where the advanced techniques are not within grasp - so perhaps a bit of over-thinking the question came about. I did enjoy the podcast though. I remember the original articles by John Blanche where he talked about using Inks as glazes rather than as washes and lining. I always thought of glazing like a pottery glaze where it enhanced the depth of colour and layering was more using triad like systems without wet blending. I think the issue I have is that some of the terminology is the same but applied to a different technique, so for someone who was painting minis in the 70s and 80s, glazing and layering might be different techniques compared to those used today with the same names. From my perspective, after about 10 years away from painting, and very much new to modern miniature sculpts and the size of 28mm/32mm figures, a lot of this is stuff I'm having to learn from scratch. One final point: the context of what your end-goal of painting detrmines how involved any technique can be: Are you painting for the Camera lens/painting competition or for the three foot rule? That will determine what techniques are viable.

I know this is all supposed to be a bit of a lark. Not to the hosts, but others who don't hold these views as a joke: If you think there is a "cheat" way to paint, you are thinking about this entire thing all wrong. There are no painting police or painting laws. The idea that you need to work super hard with old techniques or expensive equipment to "deserve" a good looking painted model is - not just wrong, but rather idiotic. Just a strong demonstration of "not getting it". Edited to clear up my hastily typed comment
@thepaintingphase

I think you may inadvertently discovered what this episode was, in the first 13 words of your comment. The grading system alone, leans into the tongue in cheek nature and Pat said in the first 2 mins that ‘no technique is cheating’. I hope that explains our thinking behind this light hearted video. Have a great day!
@TheBugB
@TheBugB 14 күн бұрын
I think when they say a technique is “cheaty” they mean it gives good results and is relatively quick. The idea being to get the same or similar effect you previously had to do tedious techniques. Therefore the newer and quicker techniques feel like cheating compared to the previous standard way. Not that these techniques are actually cheating and you should feel bad for doing them or should go out of your way to not do them. I hope that cleared things up a bit. Cause I really did not get the same impression that you did

@@TheBugB I see that as usual tone does not carry well in text. Yes, I am aware as I said - It's a lark. A joke. A laugh. The hosts are not being serious. However as we live in modern in times, with the lovely concept of "Schrodinger's ..." jerk lets say. There are in fact people who play the the concept of this very video for serious. Folks who talk of needing to "bully" other players into painting their models for example (their choice of words, not mine), and occasionally make comments very much like in this video but not in jest. If you find that hard to believe, I suggest you read up on dark souls "fans" and the lengths they will tell people the correct way to play their own single player game. There are absolutely people who extend that behavior to the warmini hobby. It's to those folks that the after the lark bits I said were addressed but I can see that that bit was not made clear enough to you, or the hosts. The hosts who yes, quite clearly state that they are just joking around in the beginning of the video, and then made the effort to make a clarifying reply to me just to be sure. My error in communication, perhaps for being to short, quick, and imprecise with my statements I typed out. Hopefully my intent is now more clear.
