I think your wrong... I've done this many times driving from Chicago to St. Louis. You start to get a so called car convoy going passing and merging properly. With good drivers it's a pleasure. Though it's very hard to do this in urban areas, just too much traffic to allow this kind of driving.

I have another story from the german autobahn, it happened a few weeks ago. I was driving about 180kph(just south of the danish german border, with no speedlimit). I started coming up to 2 cars driving in the right lane. The rear car started indicating a lane change. I quickly flicked the high beam twice, and he was very quickly to react, get back in the right lane, and let me pass with 180 kph( i drive a vw polo blue motion, so it takes ages for me to reach that speed, so i was happy not to reduce my speed). when i passed him i turned my warning signal on once, to say "thank you", he replied with a flick of high beam. I assume that was a reply, and not a "stop driving fast" answer. I was actually very grateful that he made room for me. a little "feel good" moment on the autobahn. Man i love driving there !

I live in the states but I've driven in Japan and Germany. In both Japan and Germany, it's common practice to use hazards to say a variety of things. It's used to say "thanks" or warn other drivers of road hazards such as stopped traffic or debris. Drivers in those two countries also move over as soon as they see a fast car approaching from afar. Based on my experiences from driving in New Jersey, PA, and New York, Americans are completely selfish drivers. They'll either sit in the left lane at a snail's pace and block up traffic or tailgate you even though you're going 15mph above the limit.

If he did followed/joined you there is a good chance he did it deliberately to save both gas and "traffic-stress". I have done it a lot when in Germany. Join one or two cars. Saves me gas by going through slipstream and clears traffic for me = less stress. Going fast solo in Germany burns a lot of fuel. Especially when you have to stop for traffic all the time.

@@johnmichaeltwist5086 isn't turbulent air easier to cut through? On surfaces the turbulent air gives more resistance because of friction but not at the peak or the front of the object. So it would depend on the overall surface area of your windshield, bonnet and roof compared to the surface area of your grill and bumper colliding with the less resistant turbulent air. There are so many factors to calculate that it would waste everybody's time here. But in fact the closer you are to the leading car the better. So even though I am very late i think it's still important to know a bit more about aerodynamic factors on objects such as cars or planes.

This is what I love so much about the Autobahn. Yes, people drive at crazy speeds, but they don't take this unique privilege for granted and show their gratefulness by being respsonsible and conscientious. They're fully aware of their surroundings, the rules and the limits of their own vehicle and act accordingly. Of course, you'll always encounter the odd hooligan or jerk, but most people, like the ones in this video, are polite and respectful.

On its own speed is not a killer but law enforcement can easily measure speed so it comes up as an easy thing to prosecute. Couple that with toxic under rating of speeds for different roads and situations and you have the stupid laws that exist in many countries. In Ireland it is very rare for the police to pull over middle lane and outer lane hoggers clogging up traffic on our multilane roads. These creatures either lack the ability or confidence to pull in when approached from behind by faster traffic. Even worse are the ones who drop speed to below the posted when they see something unusual on the other side of the motorway. Rubber neckers.These creatures are never pulled for their moronic behaviour. Worse are the "dog in the manger" types whose attitude seems to be:" I am afraid to go faster than 5% below posted and I. will be damned if anybody is going to pass me". I have in ten years of motorway driving seen three of these creatures pulled over by unmarked police cars for this behaviour. It should happen a lot more.

Absolutely not. It's true that you have to drive to right when not passing, but in this case look what happened. At 0:22 the white Sprinter in starting his pass moving to the middle. 3 seconds later this Audi driver decides to move over and let me go by even though that Mercedes van is already established in the middle. He DIDN'T HAVE TO switch the lanes if that would cause him to brake. He has a right to continue driving in his lane and move over after the pass is completed. Yet he decides to give up his speed and move over and let's me by. That was very courteous on his part.

***** What the guy in the Audi did was create a possible dangerous situation. What he did may have appeared courteous, but wasn't a smart move Imagine if you came up at a higher speed, (you were only doing 150-160, many drive a lot faster than you did, I know I did on the A57 last weekend) the guy switches lane, crashes onto the sprinter and spirals back on your lane No way you could save yourself from that ...they would be pulling the both of you out of your wrecks in the guardrail the correct course action for him would have been to move to a lane sooner, or wait until he passed the other vehicles Also: don't use your hazard lights for thanks, many of us could think you are approaching congested traffic (whenever approaching slow or stationary traffic on the freeway, you use your hazard lights to prevent those coming behind you from parking their car in your trunk)

I know I should've use left/right/left turn signals combination, but that day my highway convenience turn signals feature was engaged and with that I would get left/right/left/left/left... and I hate that. Also for those who actually pay attention to the road it shouldn't be that big of a deal since, as you probably noticed that as well, during actual emergency the hazard lights comes on with the brake lights simultaneously because this is dictated by driver's instinct. Although I see less and less drivers using the warning signals in such matter these days, and that's sad.

Actually this is not "nice" from him, but rather the standard procedure. If you drive on the left lane with low speed (which you're not supposed to do since the left lane is for overtaking and you generally have to stick as far to the right as possible) you have to make way for faster cars behind you. Normally the right lane is for trucks and slower vehicles, mid lane for cars and the left is only used to overtake. If you're using the left lane eventhough the mid lane is clear, you'll get a fine. Nothing special here. PS: Of course he was nice (flashing headlights and making way) but it's normal here.
@SchweinungHD

But still, there are a lot of people that don't make way for other drivers overtaking. I live in Norway though, but still, a relatively large amount of drivers don't know what you are speaking of. Unfortunately. So I liked the driver in the video, the one making way for the faster driver even though it would mean that his speed would have to be reduced. There really isn't so many of those people, and that driver is to be honored! :)

NoNoNo you have it wrong; the right lane is for trucks, grandpa's and idiots that drive the speed limits - the middle lane is for passing by everyone that drives the speed limit or slightly above it on the left lane and the left lane is for the "normal" people (who drive as fast as they please no matter the state of their tires or the weather). And all of the lanes or for the lane surfers, preferable those who are to lazy, to important or to indifferent towards their own and others safety to use their indicators.
@basswarnow
@basswarnow 9 жыл бұрын
The right lane is NOT for trucks. This common misconception is the reason why so many idiots turtle on the middle lane and hinder the traffic from flowing freely. Everyone is obligated to use the far-right lane as long as he is not overtaking. This applies on every road, no matter how many lanes it has.

WTF?!?!?! :) Since car got the "auto" 3 time blink when hitting the indicator lever i now use the hazards to thank people. I have a feeling everyone does that nowdays too.. Before it was "left,right,left,right" indicator to thank someone. But it's not possible to do anymore in an easy way in a modern car :)

we also do this in Romania. I sometimes drive slowly on county roads/national roads and i let people behind me overtake by simply using the right blinker three times, they overtake me and use the hazards to say "thanks" and i flash them to tell them "you're welcome" we also use flashing lights to let each other turn in non-traffic lights intersections and when there is police, we flash the other car on the opposite lane, they raise their hand in a way to say thank you (in both cases) and most of them will make a hand gesture like the one we use when we tell someone "come here" when the road behind them is clear of police. Truck drivers after flashing the other truck for police will raise one finger pointing up meaning that the police is up the road and a bit far away or point the finger down to indicate the police is nearby.

In germany it is a law that you habe to move over, if someone is faster than you! The left line is only for overtaking slower cars and eventually for driving like hell with 250km/h (155mps) and more or something like that haha no just kidding ... if you're fast, you can drive left, but you have to mover right, if someones faster is behind you. And I would prefer everyone to use left line only for overtaking cause in germany are areas on the "Autobahn" (how everone called it - which is only the german word for "Highway") where no speedlimits are. So sometimes a Lamborghini or something like that drives so fast (legal at these areas), that he couldn't prevent a crash so easily as you think, if you drive 100km/h (62mps) haha And if he could, he wouldn't be very amused of this almost accident. On the other side I have to say, that not everyone is driving like that rule (-.-) So it's even surprised me as a german, that he let you pass especially because he have to breal down a bit! Very mature! But most of germans wouldn't ... either they are stupid and didn't learn this law in driving school ore there are just as*holes with a small ego!

Dont use the warning sides as it could potentially mean getting a fine for false usage. Just saying ;) Other than that: It used to be nearly EVERY car on tge autobahn back in the day, but it seems, although having much more hours to do before getting the license, people dont care anymore and will have the standpoint: 120 kph is fast enough for the traffic, so I can cruise on midlabe and even be the reason for deadly accidents as more than 70% of the accidents are due to the bad behaviour of unexperienced drivers driving slow and unpredictable or even react wrong. It is so easy: Just stopp being a lazy cruiser and do your job and go furthest right lane as you potentially go....even if you driving at 160kph! With that alone, 10% less people would die immediately...something that people arent aware of. German autobahn get filled with ignorant people, millenials, etc. All these hours and noone learned anything from it. They need to make it more challenging to get a license and potentially much more expensive, if you are a loser. Sorting out potential deathtraps would be awesome! Well...back in the day, also only male drove autobahn as the women didnt really want to. They had fun, respect and even on a crowded day, all that worked absolutely amazing. Nowadays I feel like driving in the states...as if people got their license in under a day of training. :)

It's nice to know that you want to communicate with the person freeing your lane.. but please consider the other cars seeing your hazard lights. Yes, the near area behind you seems clear... at first glance ... but there're cars in the back who will wonder what emergency/hazard you are signaling and thus slowing their speed. You're potentially hindering traffic behind you without you even knowing with your "talking". Anyone who is driving fast on the autobahn and sees hazard lights will immediately reduce their speed (aka slam the breaks) at least for me that's an almost automatic reaction with no further thinking about it. And you're also violating traffic law. According to §15 and 16 StVO it is illegal to use hazard light for other purposes than warning others about danger. Considering your other videos you should know that. The universal "thank you" on german streets is a visible open and raised hand (as if greeting someone).
@turboseize
@turboseize 9 жыл бұрын
+JaniceHope In the old days before "comfort indicators" it was common just to light your indicators up just once on each side. On most modern cars, this would not longer work, because they always light up three times, so the emergency lights came into use... But U fully agree, If your car is too new, th eopen hand is better than hazard/emergency lights.
@JaniceHope
@JaniceHope 9 жыл бұрын
Martin Rudolph Even in the old days it was not common in fact this behavior seems to have started some time after the reunification. Don't know where you live or grew up, but even "back then" it was not allowed on german streets to behave that way. Srsly, if someone wants to talk or communicate while driving get CB radio, a passenger or better hold a coffee klatch at home. "Talking" with your hazard/emergency lights is more than a nuisance or bad habit, it can be dangerous on the autobahn.
@turboseize
@turboseize 9 жыл бұрын
left-right-left was quite common, especially amonst truck drivers (also it has always been sligtly illegal, in a way as this use of the indicators is nowhere mentionend in the StvO)...), hazard lights came only later. And I agree, hazard lights as "thank you" are not a very good idea, for the precise reason that whenever I see hazard lights before me I instinctively slam the brakes... But I strongly disagree with your point regarding communication in general between drivers. A little bit of cooperation makes driving much smoother and safer, and cooperation requires some communication. Perhaps just not with the hazard lights...

Ppl are not that stupid. If they are in front of a clear road, and see 2 hazard blinks, they won't decrease their speed and they will understand that the guy say something to an other. Come on, you are making a scene from absolutely nothing. What about the trucks flashing the overtaking truck to tell him he can come back on the right lane and finish his overtaking move? "OMG, a truck is flashing, there is a danger on the road, let's jump on the brakes!!" Man, continue to use your hazard lights, it is totally fine and nice.

The driver probably noticed the road ahead was blocked, and figured it wasn't worth remaining in the outside lane. Nothing extraordinary about that, because it happens on European motorways all the time, and it's certainly not unique to the Autobahn. Here in the UK drivers don't (or shouldn't!) use the hazard warning lights to thank others because it's illegal, but they frequently pull over to let others pass, usually because they cannot make significantly more progress in the lane they happen to be using. The rule here is the equivalent of the german "Rechtsfahrgebot", except that we have "Linksfahrgebot" - the obligation to keep as far to the left as possible.
