It's also further cemented by the fact that he kept the shoe: hell, he kept an entire shrine dedicated to it. Ordinarily, a memory like that would traumatize someone, but Jupe jumped at every chance to tell Amber all about it. He kept the shoe because he believed it had almost divine significance, that it was a sign that he was special and held some kind of bond over Gordy. When he encountered the UFO, he held onto a belief that he could tame it like he tamed Gordy, never understanding that he _never_ tamed gordy, he simply got lucky, like a shoe managing to fall and balance perfectly on end.

I also just found the shoe incredibly unsettling. It's the idea of something 1 in a million happening randomly in the middle of such a horrifying event. Something that would normally cause you to get excited, but in this case it just confuses you. It's the chaos of it all.

There is a story of a recovery crew searching an airplane crash site for survivors. One of the team finds a stuffed animal in the arms of a dead child; the stuffed toy is perfectly intact, the child horribly mangled. The sight of this toy in pristine condition drives the rescuer a bit mad; he throws the toy into a fire. All that death and carnage, yet in the center of it the 'bad miracle' of an undamaged toy.

It's something that is a wonder and kind of a miracle because how rare a shoe standing on it's heel is, but it happened while Gordie was mauling all the actors. Just like how the teddy bear survived but the child was badly mangled. It's a miracle that happened in an awful situation. A bad miracle.

Peele’s respect for animals extends to humans as well. Nope is a cautionary tale about Hollywood and fame: It begins with the biblical warning about becoming a spectacle and immediately cuts to rampage scene on a television show set. The cost of fame extends to Joop, the paparazzi, Holst (the director), and nearly consumes Em in her quest for fame. People seem divisive about Nope but I see it as his best yet. He effortlessly intertwines themes about fame, control, respect, and race. Peele is a genius.
@dragongirl89115
@dragongirl89115 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! People seem so confused as to why Gordy's story is even being told when it is centered on the major theme of the movie. Gordy's story isn't even that unique, there are hundreds of incidents of exotic animals harming, maiming, and killing people. People who try to treat them like pets, people who try to use them as a spectacle in TV or a circus act, people who try to contain them in zoos. Heck, just look up Tyke the elephant. Tyke was an African elephant who had been captured from the wild as a baby, trained to perform in a circus, and went on a rampage in Hawaii after attacking her handler in front of the audience. She fled, wandering the streets of Hawaii for thirty minutes until the police killed her after shooting her 86 times. Gordy's story is not a unique one. It's as old as animal exploitation and we'll continue to see it because we crave the spectacle. The sight of us humans "Mastering" other beings.

Another important theme with Jupe is the problem of doing the opposite of the film crew OJ and Em tried working with at the start of the movie. They treated the horse like it was less than an animal-like an object-and didn't respect its boundaries. But Jupe? Jupe *anthropomorphizes* the animals. Because Gordy calmed down and fell back on a trained behavior, Jupe ascribed human motives to the chimp-it spared him and tried to fistbump him, so it must have viewed him as its "friend." He anthropomorphizes Jean Jacket by assuming it must be a ship with people flying it-alien people, but still *people.* He doesn't approach it like a wild animal, so he doesn't try to understand its boundaries and respect them, and everyone payed the price because of it.

SPOILER: Also I think the trailer was designed in a way to throw you off the reveal of the movie. In the trailer you see the the disfigured woman from Gordy and the kids dressed up as aliens and you're lead to believe those are the alien or are connected to the aliens. It's a diversion to keep you from suspecting that the ship itself is the Alien. After seeing the woman in the audience it all clicked for me.

I think the opening scene where they put us in the perspective Of OJ at the commercial set kinda helped us feel that same uneasy, pressured vibe that maybe Gordy was feeling during the tv shows. The people on the show didn’t understand gordys boundaries thus creating the outburst. Secondly, I think the connection of Gordy, and the ufo tie in because OJ was the only one who respected boundaries of all the animals and all the people throughout the film. For example, He avoided talking about jupiters show because he knew it affected jup. He also respected the horses space. He never chased after them nor forced them to stay behind the fences. Although OJ and Jupiter survived traumatic experiences with danger, The difference between OJ and Jupiter however is OJ had true power over his danger (ufo) while Jupiter didn’t. His was false. Thus explaining why one ended up dead and the other alive. The connection between the two events was to contrast and show that sometimes in life, we aren’t really in control as much as we think we are.

I don't think the shoe was a miracle because it made Jupe divert his eyes from Gordy. Jupe could have been looking at Gordy that whole time and it wouldn't have mattered because he hadn't noticed him under the table yet. When he does notice him, Jupe is looking in Gordy's eyes, but the tablecloth is hiding it enough where he doesn't feel he is being challenged. I think it's just an unsettling lucky thing during a horrifying event, an interesting extra tidbit to that crazy story that adds to the absurdness of it all and therefore getting a spot in his mini-museum. Also telling of how Jupe read into the whole situation, and thinking things had meaning when it was all just happenstance (like how he thought he was spared because of Gordy's liking of him but it wasn't about that at all). And to add, like I saw mentioned here, I like the idea that it's a nod to "waiting for the shoe to drop"

I believe SNL never really did a parady on the Gordo show (in the movie universe) and that's why the characters never heard about it when Jupe brought it up. My take is that Jupe views the entire event as an SNL skit in his mind (using specific cast members he's familiar with for added detail) as a way of not reliving the tramautic memory as it really happened. A sort of a coping mechanism so he's able to talk about it and surpress the actual memories of what he really saw.

Been waiting for some to say this theory!!! I immediately thought of this, Jupe is waiting for the other shoe to drop - waiting, thinking the chimp is going to attack him next but, he is spared... I have seen some reviews saying he's spared because he doesn't look Gordy in the eyes because of the tablecloth or the shoe. Some saying he's spared because he respects Gordy unlike the other members of the cast/family, giving him a more thoughtful gift & his character being friendly with Gordy fist bumping him. Some say it's because they are both "others" being the only person of colour in the Gordy show the chimp felt a kinship/respect for Jupe & didn't attack him because of this. Whatever the reason, eventually, the other animal (jean jacket) does get him. So we too (the audience) eventually get to see "the other shoe drop".

the 1 in a million chances that the shoe fell vertically and just how unsettling the imagery is really adds to the overall theme of cosmic horror IMO. That one simple shot of the shoe standing upright caused me so much dread and made me so uncomfortable in the theater i had to look away funny enough. Peele took a big risk IMO making a cosmic horror film as any depiction of the creature would have taken away the illusion of the existentialism that is the entity but little details like that shoe really add to that feeling of dread that cosmic horror aims to make one feel. ps: if i sound like an idiot im typing this out at like 2am on a work night after watching a late viewing of the film so my bad lol

The voyeur aspect is also certainly part of the spectacle theme. Jupe is hiding beneath the table and the ultra violence he sees is a spectacle he’s peeping on, but then the random still perfection of shoe is probably like an extra little morsel which cements his fascination with watching in general. He starts a live routine where other people can also watch something harrowing and amazing. He felt that his voyeurism gave him ownership, in a way, that’s one reason he created the shrine. He’s the survivor, he saw it all, things nobody else will ever see. He’s special. People will feel special if they can get the “Oprah shot” and he got one of the ultimate Oprah shots by surviving Gordy’s rampage. But there are often costs for getting the shot, and the methods one uses to do so can also be questionable.

Jupe's sitcom history was foreshadowing. He should have learned a valuable lesson back then, but once the Star Lasso Experience scene started to unfold on screen, we were all just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Edit: this interpretation came from other youtube comments i saw, and it makes the whole story click together in my mind better. I do wish some stuff was more spelled out in the script, so that rewatches or scouring the internet wouldn't be necessary.

Peele has stated that he knows your mind will come up with a scarier idea than what a movie can make, so I think this movie was the embodiment of that. I do think the shoe was a little TOO vague though. When I left the theater I literally couldn’t wrap my head around it. I stayed all the way through the credits, hoping to God I was about to see something… got an ad for the Universal studio tour in LA… but anyway, once you watch knowing the shoe isn’t that meaningful, you can watch it peace! The exact reason why the shoe is standing up is because Jupe does not have a clear memory of where the shoe was in that horrific experience, but he has it upright in his display case. So he inherently just remembers it like that because honestly you would barely remember details during something so traumatic. It was not actually standing by up, only an altered memory

They also believe he was focused on the shoe because of how odd it was and that's why he wasn't looking at the chimp. I believe the tablecloth was impeding the chimps view and couldn't see his eyes. As a trauma survivor I can tell you the opposite is true, you remember very clearly seemingly random little details because a traumatic memory automatically becomes a core memory that'll be seared into you forever. That's why people with PTSD often describe attacks as being taken back exactly to a traumatic moment, the brain remembers it SO well that it's able to completely recreate the experience right down to bodily sensations. When Jupe is remembering Gordy, his fist is closed to give a fistbump and Amber's treatment for him is to take his hand and gently massage it to reorient Jupe's senses and make him aware of his own reality again. That's not a guarantee that the shoe _was_ perfectly upright of course, but I personally think that Jupe's memories are real.

Ah, this makes so much sense. Because its interesting how the UFO was predictable or a bit more tame where it would visit Jupe's attraction at 5:13 or 6:13 on the dot for 6 months until OJ baited it with the fake horse, its like it went on its own rampage... similar to Gordy. Gordy was fine up until the incident with the one balloon popping. Then seeing the string dangle from the UFO for those few scenes reminded me of a balloon the whole time, almost like a nudge from Peele saying "remember Gordy". And the thing with eye contact like you said, during Gordy's rampage, avoiding eye contact is most likely what saved Jupe and its what saved OJ and Lucky those few times. I just couldnt totally connect the Gordy scenes to everything else but now i think i do. I need to rewatch. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

That all makes sense as to theme. Additionally, a lot of NOPE is to do with looking at spectacle and starring at it. However, from the vantage that Jupe had under the table he literally cannot see the spectacle. The woman being attacked is shieled by the couch. The father being attacked happens after he runs through and shuts a door that was propped open. Jupe literally cannot physically see the spectacle, which adds to the false confidence in taming the UAP. Also, I just need to understand why the shoe standing upright. That's what I can't figure out. It's so small, so random, but so out of the ordinary. Which is maybe the whole point, but if you needed to place something in the center of the frame for us and Jupe why do something that was so confusing. I assume it means something more since they focus on it when Jupe is showing Emerald his secret room.

Another thing I realized in the movie is something rather small and insignificant at first. The family's last name is "haywood" and is similar to "hollywood", as they also happen to work for the film industry. "Holly" in "hollywood" in the film can be in reference to the plant "holly", which is known to symbolize fertility and eternal life and has the most species of their woody dioecious angiosperm genus. (It could be in reference to there being more white people than black people and other ethnicities in hollywood.) Meanwhile, "hay" in "haywood" can be in reference to actual "hay" used on farms. (Since they happen to also work on a farm as well.) Hay is basically the remains of cut and dried up plants used as animal fodder; The definition of fodder being someone or something considered useful only for one particular purpose. (Their only purpose from the eyes of hollywood and the film industry is them having horses for their ads and films and they're seen as the dried up remains from the ashes of hollywood.) This can all be contributed to the subtle social commentary used in the film, and this particular detail was really interesting for me considering how small, yet noticeable it is.

The standing shoe sent me into such a spiral of thought, and what I believe is that Jupe's memory of the event got distorted over the years, not least because he mounted the shoe upright on his little secret expo. Maybe he didn't place it standing up because that's how it was at the time, but instead his recollection got mixed up or even 'embellished' by this later development. It's something that, from what I can think, has no parallels elsewhere in the movie, but it kinda clicks for me. While in that story he simply develops telepathic powers, it was still heavily discussed that this was a 1 in a million chance. And how that stroke of luck dramatically affected his life. I would guess that Peele drew some inspiration from this episode. Consciously or unconsciously. He's got to be a big TZ fan! I mean he did the reboot.

This was a very enlightening video, but I'm surprised he didn't talk about the connection to the cloud that doesn't move. Clearly Peele meant for the shoe and the cloud to be connected in some way. Perhaps they are the glitches in the matrix when mother nature (or in this case a UFO and a chimp) strike back.

"NOPE" is one of those awesome films that you make more and more understanding of the plot when you watch it again. You drawing more and more connections every time you rewatch it. It's truly a wonderful film with a lot of well thought out concepts, ideas, and parallels. The shoe is just one of the many things of that nature. Definitely a neat movie in the way things like this are essentially, in a sense, the central theme.

I just watched it and hoo boy, i love this movie A LOT! I wanna watch it again now! I love how Peele plays with our expectations and like a magician he pulls out all the stops and adverts it! At the topic at hand, Jude has witnessed a horrible scene as a child. Gordie the Chimp snapped killed and maimed his co-stars in a brutal fashion. The two things that saved him that day was directing his attention at the shoe and the tablecloth over his eyes. But because Gordie reached out to him in what he perceived as the classic fist bump, they always do, he internalized this action and deluded himself into thinking he had a genuine bond with Gordie. One strong enough to spare him from the onslaught. He had control and that made him feel...special.perceive believed

Jupe should have realized how lucky he was... he thought he connected with it because he felt like he bonded with the ape. Not only that but he monetized it... it's funny because Emerald and her brother somewhat suffered from the same disease that is the obsession to capture a spectacle... when the police entered in the last scene i was halfexpecting the police to shoot Emerald with an attempt to hide the truth

The shoe thing is still bekng overcomplicated. Not only is Jupe an unreliable narrator when it comes to the memory - for example only telling the SNL version - the shoe wasn't actually standing up back then. The shoe is in the same position in the memory as it is in the glass case of his secret museum. It's frozen that way just like Jupe is stuck in the past and can't get over his trauma. The shoe both links him forever to this horrible moment and also tethers him to the present.

When Gordy fist bumps Jupe at 1:32 it looks a lot like the classic E.T shot of touching hands. There were a few other sound/visual things in the film that seemed like Close Encounters tributes as well.

Why is no one talking about the balloons popping that really seemed to set Gordy off on set? Everyone is assuming he snapped out of nowhere and pure animal instinct but the balloons popping seem to be directly related to his outburst and the subsequent maulings.

Because it doesn’t matter what set him off. Whether it was the balloons, him being mistreated, or the fact they used 3 different chimps, the tragedy still happened. In real life cases nobody cares why, but the fact these animals are forced into submission to work, and entertain people they often snap and people typically lose their life.

One ingenius detail that nobody seems to be mentioning is one that plays into that “little green men” expectation you were mentioning. The veiled woman in the audience was hinted at in the trailer to be extremely paranormal and unsettling, giving the audience the impression that she’s clearly an alien (when in reality it’s Jupe’s maimed co-star) It makes the reveal that the UFO is a creature even more jarring cause every alternative we expected is justifiably deconstructed.

Basically the standing shoe tells us what we think is impossible will always happen. We think animal actors will not go berserk, yet there you go, a chimp going loco. Expect the unexpected. But as a movie trope, it gives a sense of stillness, which actually helps heighten the mayhem going on around it. If not the shoe, a coin standing on its side has the same effect. But a coin is just to small. My first reaction to the standing shoe is to think it was a ballet shoe doing a pointe. It implies effort, a grace to rise above the ugliness about us/it. But I do wonder why director Peele did it. Maybe just to remind us of the shoe in Jupe's showcase.

The shoe is showing the trauma that he had the reason the shoe is standing is because thats how he has it displayed in the museum room so when he looks back at his memory's that's how he sees the shoe standing up right like in his museum room. I think 🤔 💭

After reading through the comments I saw so many theories I didn’t think of before that I absolutely agree on. But I think one thing that people are disregarding is when the camera removes itself from Jupes perspective and pans the outside of the set where you can see the standing shoe, except, that it’s not standing alone, it’s being worn by a person.

I was thinking this was related to the expression: till the other shoe drops. As long as the shoe remains standing, Jupe is safe. With your video, it does make a bit of sense, if the shoe had dropped and Jupe's mind is no longer paying attention to it, then Jupe would have been harmed.
