13K subs whoop whoop! Of course I'm late again but...ah well.
Here's a mini celebration. I'll probably themed ones like this for every number like this, example if I hit 77k it's time for some Halo.
But anyways, here are some thoughts on what I personally think the Skaven need in the future to bring them up to speed in Age of Sigmar and just as a wargaming faction in general.

Dumb concept: 40k space skaven who get around the lack of warpstone in 40k by coaxing it out of the warp directly like demented bonesingers

I like the idea of them using gnawholes to open unstable portals through the warp. Then again, I'm partial to introducing the Skaven to 40K by saying they're literally the Skaven from AoS, who used gnawholes to go to another universe entirely. And that the Great Horned Rat is using them to gain a foothold in the 40K universe, where he otherwise has little power. You could easily use them as a mirror for the Imperium of Man. Everything the Imperium is - from its treatment the common folk to the various factions within it - are reflected 1 to 1 in the Skaven.

@@Bluecho4 they have lot of potential for 40k, at the end of the day the skaven of the clan moulder are just rat dark eldar, they are almost limitless in numbers and breed rapidly and whitout problem (like orks or tyranids), have a surprising open mind and as long as you serve them as slaves (like Tau) and could have relations whit every other faction in order to commerce strange dark artifacts or as mercenaries (speaking chaos, eldar, imperium, Dark mechanicum, necrons and even orks) , they could even be used in order to bring back the beastmen. But as cool as it may be I probably don't want them in 40k, maybe I would prefer some allusions to a similar race but I think proper skaven would feel wrong and out of place in a different universe. BTW if someone is looking to convert some 40k skaven, you could look at mantic games, there is a lot of cool stuff that I have seen while fantasizing about a squat army

In the Eight Lamentations series (which is about 8 op Chaos weapons) one of them is called "Gung the Spear of Shadows" and it has the power that if you call out someone/things name and throw it no matter how far the distance or borders of Realms or realities the spear will fly towards you too kill you. Why is this important? Well in the book the Skaven manage to sneak past everyone and randomly steal it. And what is their masterful scheme they want it for? Maybe call out the leader of a rival clan leader or the prominent leader of a City of Sigmar, hell why not call out Sigmar's or Archaon's name to mess everyone up. NOPE! They use the damn thing as an engine because it will pull literally anything along with it so they chain the damn thing to a gyrosphere which in turn is chained to a City sized Doomwheel and try to dirtbike run over Excelsis. Great Horned Rat bless the Skaven.

@@bobvagana5443 skaven are, in D&D terms, blessed with a maxed intelligence score and cursed with a minimal wisdom score. They are great in inventing a fantasy super-nuke but only realize after pressing the button that they are in the blast radius.

Making an Ikrit model with a few units of bastardized “Skavencast Eternals” that tend to explode into warp lightning would be a cool perversion of the Stormcast hegemony. Kind of like how they were a perversion of the empire in the old world.

Ikkit Claw is actually still around somehow. He goes by Ikrit now, and he's insane and pretty much forgot everything except he existed before AoS. He shows up in Hamilcar: Champion of the Gods and has managed to piss off pretty much every God.

@ PancreasNoWork he teleported into a chaos portal but he forgot that he did not put a door to get out so he stayed in that pocked dimimention for so long he became insane but he tough why not just blow up my own pocked dimension and see what happens and he scaped but loss most of mind and body maybe blowing yourself is not a good idea?

Skaven sky pirates would be super freaking rad. Then again, there should just be a "Sky Pirate" faction, that's a mix of races. No matter the background, all are welcome in the open skies. Humans, elves, goblins, skaven. Doesn't matter, just get in the sky boat. Hell, throw some halflings in there, because they haven't been introduced into AoS yet. Make them a sky-faring version of the old Dogs of War. Raiding settlements and giving the Kharadron Overlords a run for their money.

Daemonic Skaven you say? Two words: "Rat King" Basically, a bunch of (living) rats that grew up in such crowded circumstances that their tails became entangled, or stuck together by dirt, dried blood, excrement, etc. These amalgams were objects of a lot of superstition, like the idea that they endlessly spawn rats. Adapt it as being the result of any instance of 13 skittery boys dying in the lowliest of slave pits through the above-mentioned means and you've got yourself a living portal to the rat dimension that endlessly (literally) vomits out waves of smaller rats.

I felt like that for the longest time. They are always supposed to be the most technologically advanced, but now dwarves have an entire flying faction and skaven have nothing. That should have changed with the discovery of warpstone in the clouds, but GW doesn't seem to care enough.

When I first learned about the Skaven it didn’t click in my head, I thought they were cool but that’s about it. That is, until one day I decided to play an Ikit Claw campaign in TWW2, and I read the Gold Smelter little paragraph about how they only mine hold out of spite. I fell in love with my literal and metaphorical Rat Bastards, and they deserve better on tabletop too

Their entire deal is, as PNW put it, to be little assholes because they can. Doesn't matter who. Doesn't matter why. Someone is getting stabbed, and none of them care as long as it isn't them. In TT, for a lot of people, that doesn't really stick and they just see them as a horde faction with a little tech and monsters for flavor. When you can convince someone to actually play like a skaven, and not just play the skaven, they start to really enjoy their game plan. There really is no such thing as a true loss when playing them. It's always good fun to see even the best warriors get slapped by a bad dice roll, and get taken down by some mangy clan rat who probably hasn't bathed since he was born, and doesn't even have two brain cells to rub together to properly hold that piece of scrap metal he called a sword. In TWW, that got elevated so much more now that there's a map. Empire building is for nerds; build an under empire instead. Get a couple core areas for recruitment sprinkled around, and go be an asshole to random faction. Be it for strategic reasons like sacking their big cities for money, or just because you can. There's typically over 100 factions on the map for quite a long time; roll a RNG if you're not sure whose problem you want to become. Lost a recruitment area due to a plan turning sour? Just recapture it at a tier 5 like it never happened. Bonus points for doing it with a friend, or more in game 3, but make sure it's one that's capable of having fun, or it's one you're willing to lose. Lol

40K already has a corrupt empire of fast-breeding, disposable slaves, serving dysfunctional rulers with chronic backstabbing disorder, all under an incompetent council and the worship of an evil deity. It's called the Imperium of Man. They're even have factions that sync 1:1 with the Skaven: Adeptus Mechanicus (Clan Skyre), Imperial Guard (Clan Verminus), Officio Assassinorum (Clan Eshin), Ecclessiarchy/Sisters of Battle (Clan Pestilens), and Space Marines (Clan Moulder). I mean yes, having the Skaven be in 40K would be cool, funny, and thematically resonant. (A faction of mutant rats/abhumans/xenos that worship Chaos being nonetheless a foil for the Imperium of Man). But it's understandable why GW wouldn't, since said Imperium fills that role so succinctly already.

To my knowledge the main reason they aren’t in it (aside from the parallels between them and the Imperium) is that GW wanted to make sure 40K wasn’t just Warhammer Fantasy but in a Sci-Fi setting. Which is a same but if nothing else I can applaud them creators for wanting to do something different. I really wish they DID go down that route with the Skaven because the Skaven are awesome but oh well.

Similar to how the Orks are one of my favorite parts of 40k lore, the Skaven are one of my favorite bits of Fantasy lore. You really did sum it up perfectly, the Skaven are simultaneously one of the gravest threats in the whole setting and also a race of Dr. Doofenshmirtzs, but rather than love to hate them, I honestly just love them. Drown the whole world in rats!

In one of the new Realmslayer Blood of the Old World novels, Thanquol uses a type of Skaven daemon. Something called a “Realm-Burrow Rat.” They’re basically animals, but some Skaven use them to start their Gnawhole gates.

On the topic of Skaven demons, I believe the Great Horned Rat shouldn't have replaced Slannesh. Of course, it's too late for that, but I think the Horned Rat can be an interesting and unique Chaos God among the other four. Khorne is about rage and bloodshed, Slannesh is about pleasure and excess, Nurgle is about disease and decay, and Tzeentch is about magic and fate. In that case, I propose that the Horned Rat would be about greed and envy. The Skaven had already stolen weapon designs from other factions, so why not their god do the same to Chaos. The Horned Rat would various aspects of the four he deems useful and them apply them to his people. I have a couple ideas for this, like giant Stormvermin that resemble minotaurs but rats, Slender weasel-like Skaven like Fiends of Slannesh, Gray Seers with tattered, feathery wings with access to especially powerful spells and so on. Just a few ideas.

I wish they'd do more with the Skaven in Chamon. They're just hanging out there, sitting in dwarfholds and digging around in Grungnis backyard. After all, it's the Realm of Metal, where are the horrific rat-terminators.

I could completely see Skaven deliberately making posessed as a form of upgrade, complete with a chance that the demon and host get in a fight mid battle and kill themselves. Tiberium mutant looking 'Warpstone enhanced' Skaven also sound quite sweet as a new aesthetic style.

Beyond 40k Skaven, an obvious one would a Broodmother unit. She could either be a twisted experiment monstrosity or a new named character who beat impossible odds to become an actual Queen among the skaven...maybe both at the same time. P.S If there is one weakness in Skaven lore, its Skaven being so cartoonishly selfish and self destructive that the gray area between when a skaven is weaned and when they become...literally anything but an emaciated rat corpse/dinner needs more elaboration.

What is amazing to me is that GW missed an amazing market strategy when Vermintide 2 came out. Why not make plastic molds from the 3D rendered models of the Skaven from the game and release them in a new Start Collecting? I mean honestly they could do it with any licensing clause that they make. Boss we need new Tyranid models!! OH I know!! Render them from the new Space Marine Game!!!

What the Skaven need is something that lets them return to being able to use their core feature successfully. The Skaven are first and formost the primary swarm race of the setting, everything else is icing on the cake. The first order of business should be tweeking their moral system so that they can bring their numbers to bear better and maybe giving them more of a bonus in something for bringing lots of raw numbers to the feild.

In an old version of fantasy, Skaven got +1 morale for each line of skaven in a unit, up to +3. Not sure if AoS have that rule, it incentivize big chunks of troops

One of the things I like most about AoS is how Chaos and to a lesser extent Destruction are the dominant force, meaning that we actually get to see what their version of "civilisation" looks like. I'd like to see more of that for the Skaven, either through models or terrain or lore, where there is territory that is actually controlled by the Skaven. Imagine a huge, WW1 style battlefield covered in trenches and rackety Skaven weaponry where they are constantly fighting a bloody tug of war against Khorne; countless clanrats sent into the meatgrinder. Or a battle between a Kharadron fleet invading some sort of crazy flying Skaven port.

I've watched this video multiple times now, and only now does the idea of a skaven bio-titan really hit me as a "good" idea for the skaven, and to balance it out every 5 turns you need to roll to see if it turns on you and kills the nearest troops to it.

I would love to see a rule where you roll a dice for every Skaven unit at the beginning of the game that doesn't belong to a claim that your warlord is unless a Gray seer. If you roll a one that unit is considered playing for the purposes of playing the game. Nothing like feeling like you got backstabbed by your own models you painted and bought.

What i wanna see is essentially a rocket launching batista, lore wise someone activates it right before shooting (letting you have the possible bad things happening of the missile blowing up on the ballista, not getting activated so it just becomes a regular bolt, or as a high role it airbursts for maximum damage,) it would be great, like combing the biggest weapon the rats have and a ballista that brettonia would call to simple working together

4:53 Skaven power armor. Warp powered and highly unstable. In tabletop, it would be an powerful, yet volatile unit. Powerful, because it's one of the more tanky skaven units, and volatile because it has the off chance to up and explode.

What makes the lack of named characters sting harder is that Skaven were the only race beside the lizardmen that were lifted whole cloth from The Old World. Skavenblight literally hid out in a pocket dimension before all the other Realms popped up for the rats to tunnel out to, so you'd think at least some characters would still be kicking (I know Ikit is still around, but has yet to be given a model or rules beyond the generic Arch Warlock).

In the aos short stories they actually make new stuff like submarine and fling ships , however for now they didn't received new models. It is rumored/leaked that they are going to receive updates and new models along side with the lizard man/seraphon. Also recentely in the broken realms series the (skaven clan with ninjas and spies) are working with belakor(a very active character in the story for now).

So there’s a unit from a mod from Warhammer two that I’d love to see. They’re called Skryre Shockvermin. Some warplock engineer decided to attach an M203 to a halberd and load it with gas nades then give it to a bunch of augmented stormvermin

In my total warhammer campaign I killed the wood elves using warcrimes. I was and am, very happy with their death.

I first encountered scaven in vermintide 2 and when I played mordheim scaven appealed to me the most from all the starting factions. There’s something liberating when you play a gang of rats and steal warpstone from snobbish humans and chaos worshipers. It’s like you’re a dangerous nuisance and others have to acknowledge you get down on your level and fight you it’s just so fun

For a new faction style. Perhaps skaven that live under a vamp city feasting on dead zom flesh and learning some death/vamp magic. Could be cool.

As somebody who admires AOS and Fantasy Battles from the distance of my model’s display shelves instead of getting sunk into the tabletop scene, and as someone who doesnt trust GW to put in any effort over the bare minimum when modernising a range that isnt Space Marines or Stormcast, I have found that 3D printing Skaven models designed by basically the only Warhammer Fantasy creator on Cults3D is an incredibly cheap way to ammass a gargantuan army of wonderfully modern looking rat-men that I personally will never play a game with. But I can imagine there is a crowd out there who would actually get around to chucking some stinky mice-men that look pulled almost straight out of Total War onto the tabletop, and so I’d encourage any of those people to grab a printer the price of a “Start Collecting” box instead of waiting for GW to get around to new plastic kits by the time AOS 7th edition or so rolls around.

I thought Queek actually survived and betrayed chaos by killing some chaos lord. I don't remember where I got that info but I heard it from somewhere. It would be cool for Eshin Triads to be a thing oh and maybe human slaves too with skaven gear strapped onto them like cannon fodder.

I still hold the belief that Gwubs had a plan to split the skaven and have some clans serve other chaos gods, pestilence already worked woth Nurgleites so not too hard to imagine Skryr joining Tzeentch, Mors with Khorne and Moulder with Slannesh, then keep Eshin as the Horned rats favourites.

Ikkit but he is entombed in a warpstone dreadknight with a lightning cannot crudely strapped to a falling apart mechanical right forearm of the mech and his staff being held by an extraordinarily large rat oger left arm. Queek but he is a storm cast eternal sized flaming rat skeleton (The cowardly rictus one) but he is a ghost and literally ran away from death and cannot be killed, only running away after he takes so much damage in one turn

I want rat tanks. Not captured/modified steamtanks... But cold war era soviet awkward tanks like Object 279, Object 775, or the screw driven vehicles. The Screwtank would especially be great against wood elf areas as the screw driven mechanism could be lined with warpstone to actively corrupt the land it travels through.

I got into warhammer due to the books mainly one's with skaven as the main focus the black plague series warlords of 8 peeks and such. Then that brought me to the models mainly wanted the models of characters i liked and i was so disappointed that skaven have few named one's. As you said we got queek and ikit claw but i want more! Lord nurgulch sleek sharpwit i can go on and on. I had no idea about the fact skaven have demons of there own i agree having them as models would be AMAZING!!!

2:38 This was a problem for WHFB armies ported over to AoS with special character models: the special character models became generic leader models for the new AoS factions (Wurrzag is an example). I totally agree that the Skaven need more of an impact in AoS lore, like a warp stone atomic bomb-sized impact. Hopefully we will get that with AoS 4th Edition.

Flying rats! Like a deadly helicopter that blows up as soon as it lifts off but if it survives then loads off clan rats and weapons teams and bombs, and next turn it blows up

I do think having a necromancer skaven would be funny mostly cause it would be the ultimate middle finger to negash. Kinda going some AU stuff where a skaven finds one of the books of negash and proceeded to make an empire of corpses and the races those corpses came from after she escaped a skaven undercity. Long long story short, during the second coming of negash as the rest of the skaven destroyed negash’s pyramid she destroyed negash’s soul and used it to fuel her ascension as she tricked the skaven into worshipping her into godhood. So now negash is barely conscious if she lets him be seeing these random skaven enjoy the godhood he wanted. And no he can’t come back cause she had all his books and history destroyed to keep any idiot from trying to summon him back and gnawed on his soul so much that he could only come back as a mindless husk by the time archeon dragged his ass into the realm.
