Just one thing- its not like we don't want to talk about soviet times, it gets sensitive when someone is simply downplaying that fact with ignorance, like: oh so your country originated from russia? etc. Personally I'm always explaining to the best of my knowledge (being born in USSR) issues we have with soviet/russian history if I'm asked

Thank you for pointing out how painful and hurtful soviet past is to us, and for encouraging people to be thoughtful about asking us about it and talking to us about it 🙏❤🙂

I was happy to hear that someone went to see Vilnius from above and recommended it to other visitors. I have lived in Vilnius and have always loved the views back then. The Soviet times had been awful and Lithuanians (who are not Russians in Lithuania) always knew that the USSR just harmed the country a lot, and sometimes even deliberately so, having the goal to make Lithuania alien and unattractive to other Europeans. The other times, they neglected the buildings and the environments because of lack of money, carelessness of always poor and tired Soviet people who couldn't see any Western countries in their lives.

As a Lithuanian I agree that the Soviet Union question is sensitive. Even in that era Lithuanian Soviet republic was sort of a black sheep. However, the soviet influence is definitely there, at least in the architecture and we should not neglect it but rather learn from it! Also visit Gruto parkas whenever you have a chance. That's a magnificent experience!

"Black sheep" in what herd?
@manometras
@manometras Жыл бұрын
@@tom4stream, in the herd of those ussr’ers who thought the USSR was cool and were proud to live there. Lithuanians did not like being forced to live in that awful country.

@@manometras oh, okay, thanks. Then I only suppose all three Baltic states are "black sheep" in that regard :)

@@tom4stream , yep. The soviet Russians used to call all the three people (Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians) fascists and nazis just for not loving the USSR and for not wanting to become Russians / Russify themselves, learn perfect Russian, go to live to Moscow. They also called the three people peasants in the bad sense, with disrespect. And then the same soviet Russians used to come by long green trains to buy food and other goods for their simple life from our places, because it was worse with all that in Russia itself (planned economy worked wrong).

9:25 The buildings suck but look at how awesome the neighborhood is

This! I love the neighbourhoods of Fabijoniskes, Justiniskes, Pasilaiciai ect. The buildings sure are fugly, but the it's the people who are living there who made the neighbourhoods very cosy and nice. With the new renovations I think eventually the buildings will lose their Soviet look little by little.

For people who like to get higher and see new view of the town you should visit Vilnius TV tower, you can get yourself onto the highest viewpoint of the town (if I am not mistaken) and it is even more astonishing compared to Gediminas tower or 3 Crosses Hill. Ofcourse that one is paid. There is diner and new type of acitvity allowing you to walk on the roof with safety measures of course :D
